  • The spacer grid set is a component in the nuclear fuel assembly. The set supports the fuel rods saftely. Therefore, the spacer gl1d set should have sufficient strength for the external impact forces. The fretting wear occurs between the spring of the fuel rod and the spacer grid due to tile flow-induced vibration. The conceptual design of the spacer grid set is performed based on the Independence Axiom of axiomatic design. Two functional requirements are defined and corresponding design parameters are selected. The overall flow of the design is defined according to the application of axiomatic design. The design for the impact load is carried out by using nonlinear dynamic analysis to determine the length of the dimple. Topology optimization is carried out to determine a new configuration of the spring. The fretting wear is reduced by shape optimization using the homology theory. In the design to reduce the fretting wear, the deformed shape of the spring should be the same as that of the fuel rod. This condition is transformed to a function and considered as a constraint in the shape optimization process. The fretting wear is expected to be reduced due to the homology constraint. The objective function is minimizing the maximum stress to allow a slight plastic deformation. Shape optimization results are confirmed through nonlinear static analysis because the contact area becomes wider.

  • PDZ domains bind to short segments within target proteins in a sequence-specific fashion. GRIP/ABP family proteins contain six to seven PDZ domains and interact via its sixth PDZ domain (class Ⅱ) with the C-termini of various proteins, including liprin-α. In addition the PDZ456 domain mediates the formation of homo- and heteromultimers of GRIP proteins. To better understand the structural basis of peptide recognition by a class Ⅱ PDZ domain and DZ-mediated multimerization, we determined the crystal structures of the GRIPI PDZ6 domain, alone and in complex with a synthetic C-terminal octapeptide of human liprin-α, at resolutions of 1.5 Å and 1.8 Å, respectively. Remarkably, unlike other class Ⅱ PDZ domains, Ile736 at αB5 rather than conserved Leu732 at αB1 makes a direct hydrophobic contact with the side chain of the Tyr at the -2 position of the ligand. Moreover, the peptide-bound structure of PDZ6 shows a slight reorientation of helix αB, indicating that the second hydrophobic pocket undergoes a conformational adaptation to accommodate the bulkiness of the Tyr's side chain, and forms an antiparallel dimer through an interface located at a site distal to the peptide-binding groove. This configuration may enable formation of GRIP multimers and efficient clustering of GRIP-binding proteins.

  • We evaluated the contour using corneal asphericity of the myopic cornea in Korea and investigated the relationship between refractive error and other ocular dimensions in Korean myopia, including anterior chamber depth and asphericity. The monoocular asphericity value of 50 myopes with $-4.83{\pm}2.38$ D between early 20 age and early 30 age in adult was included. Cycloplegic refraction, corneal asphericity and anterior chamber depth using corneal topography were examined. The mean asphericity values were$-0.27{\pm}0.13$ and the corneas of 96.0% were prolate ellipse. Refractive error was related to asphericity and anterior chamber depth among myopes. However, asphericity only were significant difference in high and low myopia group. Corneal configuration on the contact lens fits are discussed. We think that the longitudinal study for myopia and asphericity was required.

  • An absolutely passive fit at the interface with the superstructure and the abutment cylinders is need for implant longevity. In this study, a method of cast framework correction using spark erosion technology was evaluated. Electric discharge machining(EDM) is a process that uses electrical discharges, or sparks, to machine metal, The surface being machined is bombared with high-intensity electrical energy pulses that gradually melt away the stock until the desired configuration is obtained. Master model was fabricated by using metal block impression analogue, which fired 5 Branemark squared impression coping in an arc shaped metal block. Then framework using 4mm standard gold cylinder and type IV gold alloy was fabricated. In order to measure the fit of the framework we used both contact and noncontact coordinate measurement machine and data was processed by computer program. After superimposition of gold framework and master model numeric image data the distances between gold cylinder bearing surfaces and abutment replica bearing surfaces, and the angle deviations between gold cylinder and abutment replica centroid points were calculated. The results were as follows 1 The total mean distance (p<0.01) and standard deviation (p<0.001) between the gold cylinders and abutment bearing surfaces were significantly decreased after EDM 2. The total mean of maximum distances was significantly decreased after EDM (p<0.05). 3. After EDM, the mean angle deviation between centroid points was decreased.

  • The Ni-Al anodes of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) with three different structures were successfully fabricated in order to reduce the thickness of the anode down to 0.3 mm; one was the non-supported anode made by a conventional tape casting method, and others were the supported anodes made by lamination or direct casting on the nickel screen. It was seen from the physical analyses and cell operation that the supported thin anodes made by direct casting showed good mechanical strength and cell performance because of a good contact between the anode materials and the support. The single cell using the above anode showed the cell voltage of 0.858 V at the current density of 150$mA/cm^2$ with the nitrogen cross-over of only 0.6% at the operation time of 1,000 h, which was similar to the performance of the conventional thick (0.7 mm) anode. The ability to utilize a thin configuration of anode should cut down the amount of nickel alloy and consequently reduce its manufacturing cost.

  • The role of transfer films formed during sliding of polymer composites against steel counterfaces was studied in terms of the tribological behaviors of composites. Four kinds of composites were included in this study: (1) unfilled PPS, (2) PPS+2%CuO, (3) PPS+2%CuO+5% carbon fiber (CF), and (4) PPS+2%CuO+15%Kevlar. The filler material CuO was in nanoscale particulate form and the reinforcing material was in the form of short fibers. The composites were prepared by compression molding at $310^{\circ}C$ and sliding tests were run in the pin-on-disk sliding configuration. The counterface was made of tool steel hardened to 55-60 HRC and finished to a surface roughness of 0.09-0.10 ${\mu}m$ Ra. Wear tests were run for 6 hrs at the sliding speed of 1 m/s and contact pressure of 0.65 MPa. Transfer films formed on the counterfaces during sliding were investigated using AFM and SEM. The results showed that as the transfer film became smooth and uniform, wear rate decreased. PPS+2%CuO+15%Kevlar composite showed the lowest steady state wear rate in this study and its transfer film showed the smoothest and the most uniform characteristics. The examination of worn surfaces of PPS+2%CuO composite using X-ray area scanning (dot mapping) showed back-transfer of steel counterface material to the polymer pin surface. This behavior is believed to strengthen the polymer pin surface during sliding thereby contributing to the decrease in wear rate.

  • In manufacturing companies, engineering information is a central data which defines a product to be produced. This is changed by various factors such as changes of product configuration, changes of drawings information of a technology's licensor, etc, and these changes essentially accompany the changes of a product BOM (Bill of Materials) structure. Thus, engineering changes gives a heavy burden to information management within enterprise because the changes of product BOM have an influence on each departmental BOM such as a procurement BOM, a manufacturing BOM, a quotation BOM, etc. Especially, these changes of product BOM due to the engineering changes is inevitably and frequently happened by a customer's requirements in a customer-oriented make-to-order manufacturing environments. In these manufacturing environments, information gap among each department from the first contact point of customer to engineering, materials, production, quality, and management is very close, and thus it is very important that the change information of product BOM due to changes of product specification and engineering information are efficiently communicated among each department. This paper describes a procedure of determining product specification and of generating product BOM, and proposes an efficient management scheme for the change process of product BOM information due to changes of product specification and engineering. Also, to show the effectiveness of the proposed product BOM management scheme, a product BOM management system is implemented for the ship engine division of 'H' company, one of customer-oriented make-to-order manufacturing enterprises.

  • Membrane reactors are systems which combine a chemical reactor with a membrane separation process allowing to carry out simultaneously conversion and product separation. The catalyst can be immobilized on the membrane or simply compartmentalized in a reaction space by the membrane. Membrane reactors are today investigated to produce optically pure isomers and/or resolve racemic mixture of enantiomers. The interest towards these systems is due to the increasing demand of enantiomerically pure compounds to be used in the pharmaceutical, food, and agrochemical industries. In fact, enantiomers can have different biological activities, which often influence the efficacy or toxicity of the compound. On the basis of current literature there are basically two schemes on the use of membrane technology to produce enantiomers. In one case, the membrane itseft is intrinsically enantioselective: the membrane is the chiral system which selectively separates the wanted isomer on the basis of its conformation. In the other, a kinetic resolution using an enantiospecific biocatalyst is combined with a membrane separation process; the membrane separates the product from the substrate on the basis of their relative chemical properties (i.e. solubility). This kind of configuration is widely used to carry out kinetic resolutions of low water soluble substrams in biphasic membrane reactors [Giomo, 1995, 1997; Lopez, 1997]. These are systems where enzyme-loaded membranes promote reactions between two separate phases thanks to the properties of enzymes, such as lipases, to catalyse reactions at the org ic/aqueous interface; the two phases are maintained in contact and separated at the membrane level by operating at appropriate transmembrane pressure. A schematic representation of biphasic membrane reactor is shown in figure 1, while an example of enantiospecific reaction and product separation carried out with these systems is reported in figure 2.

  • As a stator for steam turbine diaphragm, hollow-type nozzle stator to substitute for conventional solid one is introduced in this study. This hollowed stator can be separated into two parts such as upper and lower plates with large and curved surface area. This study focuses on thick plate forming process for the upper plate of the hollow-partitioned nozzle stator. First, to reduce forming defects such as under-cut and localized thinning of the deformed plate, and to avoid tool interruption between forming punch and lower die, tool design including the position determination of forming surfaces is performed. Uni-axial tensile tests are carried out using SUS409L steel plate with initial thickness of 5.00mm, and plastic strain ratio (r-value) is also obtained. Due to the asymmetric curved configuration of the upper plate, it is hard to adopt a series of blank holder or draw-bead, so the initial plate during this thick plate forming experiences unstable and non-uniform contact. To easy this forming difficulty and find suitable tool geometry without sliding behavior of the workpiece in the die cavity, two geometric parameters with respect to each shoulder angle of the lower die and the upper punch are adopted. FE models with consideration of 21 combinations for the geometric parameters are built-up, and numerical simulations are performed. From the simulated and predicted results, it is shown that the geometric parameter combinations with ($30^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$) and ($45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$) for the shoulder angle of the lower die and the upper punch are suitably applied to this upper plate forming of the hollow-partitioned nozzle stator used for the turbine diaphragm.
