  • An integrated finite element-based model is presented for the prediction of the three dimensional, transient thermo-mechanical behavior of the work roll in hot strip rolling. The model is comprised of basic finite element models which are incorporated into an iterative solution procedure to deal with the interdependence between the thermo-mechanical behavior of the strip and that of work roll, which arises from roll-strip contact, as well as with the interdependence between the thermal and mechanical behavior. Demonstrated is the capability of the model to reveal the detailed aspects of the thermo-mechanical behavior and to reflect the effect of various process parameters.

  • The Roll-to-Roll system including continuous flexible thin materials and roller has its wide range of applications especially in the electronic printing industry. The industry is growing rapidly and the printing speed is also improving. However, the printing machine based on web and roller system has it own problem. As the web speed increases, the failure to maintain the contact may occur and the air entrain between the roller and the paper web may exist. Air bubbles may remain attached to electronic ink on the web causing defects on product surface. With the development of image processing technique, the airflow around the web and rolls can be visualized and calculated by PIV method. In our experiment, the simple web and rolls system is used to R2R simulator. The flow field is studied at various web speeds and positions. The result shows that the flow field has complicated structure with turbulent characteristic and the main trend of flow is obtained by taking time average of flow field.

  • The caster roll shells have the good thermal conductivity and the low thermal expansion and have to exhibit high enough strength and good ductility at temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$. Thermal stress in particular is very high due to the contact with the liquid aluminium. The main stresses are of thermal origin, which bring a plastic fatigue on surface. This paper will represent one survey about the investigation of the failure of roll shells for continuous casters and an analysis using the simulation of the temperature distribution and the state of stress during hot rolling. Moreover, there will be a discussion on the roll shell of Mod. HAR 5 which is developed by heat treatment process. Mod. HAR 5 has advantages of high strength, high toughness and increased thermal stress resistance while maintaining the same productivity as the conventional roll.

  • A finite element analysis-based approach which investigates the causes of the breakdown in the outer ring of the choke at hot rod rolling mill is presented. Two-dimensional drawings of the whole vertical-type mill stand are transformed into three-dimensional CAD models. Non-linear elasto-plastic deformation analysis of material at the roll gap is performed for computing roll force and torque of the work roll. Then, the reaction forces of the bearing rings together with a set of roller bearings that support the work roll are obtained by means of rigid body motion analysis. Finally, stress behaviors in the bearing rings together with a set of roller bearings that support the work roll are investigated by linear elastic analysis. Results reveal that stress at the contact area between the outer ring and roller bearing is extraordinary high when an internal gap between an external surface of the outer ring and the internal surface of the chock due to wear of the inside of the chock occurs.

  • A theoretical study of elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts with both rolling and spin has been carried out. A finite difference method and the Newton-Raphson method are applied to solve the problem. The velocity vectors resulting from combined spin and rolling/sliding motion lead to asymmetric pressure distributions and film shapes. Film contours and variations of the minimum and central film thicknesses are compared with various spin-roll ratios. At high spin-roll ratios the minimum film thickness is considerably reduced, whereas the central film thickness decreases less dramatically, The present numerical scheme can be used in the analysis of general elliptical contact problems.

  • This paper is related to a roll-type micro-contact printing process. The proper parameters such as coating velocity, inking velocity, printing velocity and printing pressure as well as Ag contents of Ag ink were extracted to perform the fine patterning of Ag electrodes. Additionally we developed a process for PDMS with high uniform thickness. Finally, we obtained the Ag fine electrodes on $4.5cm\;{\times}\;4.5cm$ plastic substrate with the line width of 10 um, thickness less than 300 nm, surface roughness less than 40 nm, and the specific resistance of $2.08\;{\times}\;10^{-5}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$.

  • Evaluation of rolling contact fatigue damage as well as material development for roll of rolling mill is being studied until quite recently. In this paper, a focus has been imposed on evaluating the rolling contact fatigue damage. In order for this, the accumulating process of rolling contact damage using the ferritic, pearlitic and bainitic DCI has been analyzed by X-ray diffraction technique. The main finds are; 1) The graphite in DCI is considered to be a cause of interfering in the redistribution of stress. Eventually, it results in the branching of crack. 2) The evaluation of rolling contact fatigue damage can be estimated in terms of the change of residual stress and/or a half-value breadth on surface during rolling contact.

  • An investigation is performed to clarify the manufacturing conditions of pure magnesium and AZ31 magnesium alloy thin plate using the melt drag method. By the melt drag method, suitable for magnesium molten metal, pure magnesium can be produced as a continuous thin plate with a thickness of 1.4 mm to 2.4 mm in the range of 5 m/min to 20 m/min of roll speed, and the width of the thin plate to the nozzle outlet width. AZ31 magnesium alloy is able to produce a continuous sheet of thickness in the range of 5 m/min to 30 m/min in roll circumferential speed, with a thickness of 0.6 mm to 1.6 mm and a width of the sheet matching the nozzle outlet width. In the magnesium melt drag method, the faster the circumferential speed of the roll, the shorter the contact time between the molten metal and the roll, and it is found that the thickness of the produced thin plate becomes thinner. The effect of the circumferential roll speed on the thickness of the thin plate is evident in the low roll circumferential region, where the circumferential speed is 30 m/min or less. The AZ31 thin plate manufactured by the melt drag method has a finer grain size as the thickness of the thin plate decreases, but it is currently judged that this is not the effect of cooling by the roll.

  • The cold rolled strip meets continuously rising demands on the less deviation of thickness at the width direction of their rolled products. Especially, the special interest has been to find the methods to reduce the edge drop which influences seriously on the yield losses and the quality of the rolled products. In this study, the influence of hot coils on the thickness profile of cold rolled strip was analyzed. For obtainint the tapered work roll shig\ft conditions, the thermal crown and the flattening between the work roll and the strip were calculated, and the main parameters which have mostly effects on the edge drop were simulated. Also the obtained conditions from the simulation were applied to Tandem Cold Rolling Mill to investigate the change of the edge drop and the crown ratio depending on the amount of work roll taper and the length of contact of taper. The results of the application led to better thickness profile than conventional one.

  • The continuing demand for quality products requires better understanding and improved control of the production process. And, in recent year requirements for flatness control in strip rolling have become increasinglysevere because of the control for flatness of cold rolled strip is essential for further down stream processing. Also a speeds of rolling mills to meet productivity requirements puts a demanding requirement on the control of flatness of rolled strip. The demands on a total flatness control system therefore are a measuring and indication system consisting of a measuring roll that is robust, accurate, reliable and require a minimum of maintenance. The critical prt of any control system is the quality of the information being provided by the measurement instrument or device. It is therfore of utmost importance to have an accurate, repeatable and reliable measuring system. So, in this paper, The measuring roll for automatic flatness control system of contact type has been investigated.
