  • This research investigates the non-repeatable runout (NRRO) of a HDD spindle system at elevated temperature by analyzing the characteristics of a ball bearing and the natural vibration characteristics of a HDD spindle system due to the effect of elevated temperature. It shows that the elevated temperature results in the increase of the contact angle and the decrease of the deformation of the ball bearing in a HDD spindle system. The variation of bearing frequencies, which are dependent on the cosine function of contact angle, is almost negligible at elevated temperature. However, the decrease of bearing deformation at elevated temperature reduces the stiffness of the ball bearing and the natural frequencies of a HDD spindle system consequently. The latter has a significant effect on the amplitude and the frequency distribution of NRRO at elevated temperature.

  • This paper presents the thermoelastic analysis and 3-D failure analysis of the carbon/carbon brake disk. The mechanical properties of the carbon/carbon brake disk were measured for both in-plane and out of plane directions. The mechanical properties were used as the input of the thermoelastic analysis and 3-D stress analysis for the brake disk. The gap between rotor clip and clip retainer was an important parameter in the loading transfer mechanism of the rotor. The change of gap was considered separating the mechanical deformation and thermal deformation. Because the rotor clip and clip retainers were not contacted, the clip retainers and rivets were excluded from the rotor analysis model. The disk was modeled by using the cyclic symmetry condition and the contact problem between the rotor disk and rotor clip was considered. From the results of the 3-D stress analysis, the stress concentration at the key hole of the brake disk was confirmed.

  • In this paper, a three elastic body sliding contact problem is modeled to investigate more precise wear mechanisms related with the sealing surface. A 3-D finite element contact model, a small spherical elastic particle, PTFE seal and steel surface, is solved using a nonlinear finite element code MARC. The deformed seal and steel surface shapes, von-Mises and principal stress distributions are obtained for different seal sliding distances. The entrapped small particle within PTFE seal results in very high stresses on the steel surface which exceeded its yield strength and produce plastic deformation such as groove and torus. The sealing surface could also be worn down by sub-surface fatigue due to intervening small particles together with the well-known abrasive wear. Therefore the proposed contact model adopted in this paper can be applied in design of various sealing systems, and further studies are required.

  • The droplet impact and merging process on a flat substrate with contact angle hysteresis is numerically studied. The droplet deformation is determined by an improved level-set method employing a sharp-interface technique for the stress condition at the liquid-gas interface and the contact angle condition at the liquid-gas-solid interline. Based on the computations, the droplet impact and merging pattern is investigated to find the optimal condition in manufacturing a micro-line. The effects of dynamic contact angles and droplet spacing on droplet motion are quantified.

  • This paper presents a general description of single and dual contact tooling systems, finite element analysis, and discussions on the application of the system to the 5-head router machine which is in particular for aerospace components. This study has been performed as part of the development of the new generation 5-head router machine which is designed for high productivity. Such high productivity in essence requires high speed rotation and multiple spindles in one machine. The high speed rotation may exceed a range in a conventional single contact tooling system. The conventional tooling system is reevaluated in comparison with the dual-contact system. Finite element analysis using simplified spindle models compares major differences in the two systems. Some problems in the application to the 5-head router machine are discussed.

  • This paper presents the experimental study of the non-contact temperature measurement for the shadow mask of cathode ray tube using InSb sensor. At present, High resolution of CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) is needed broadly; therefore, the measurement of temperature distribution of shadow mask in CRT during operation is important to analyze the thermal deformation of shadow mask. Most of the studies could not measure the temperature distribution of shadow mask precisely. We studied the temperature dis- tribution of shadow mask using InSb photo sensor for 17" cathode ray tube (CRT). Experiments using ther- mocouple are performed to validate the results of non-contact measurement. The results agree well with those results of non-contact method using InSb sensor.nsor.

  • An analytical method has been developed to estimate the dynamic contact force between wheel and rail when trains are running on rail with vertical irregularities. In this method, the effect of Hertzian deformation at the contact point is considered as a linearized spring and the wheel is considered as an sprung mass. The rail is modelled as a discretely-supported Timoshenko beam, and the periodic structure theory was adopted to obtain the driving-point receptance. As an example, the dynamic contact force for a typical wheel/rail system was analysed by the method developed in this research and the dynamic characteristics of the system was also discussed. It is revealed that discretely-supported Timoshenko beam model should be used instead of the previously used continuously-supported model or discretelysupported Euler beam model, for the frequency range above several hundred hertz.

  • Nanometer-sized structures are being applied to many fields including micro/nano electronics, optoelectronics, quantum computing, biosensors, etc. Micro contact printing is one of the most promising methods for manufacturing the nanometer-sized structures. The crucial element for the micro contact printing is the nano-resolution printing technique using polymeric stamps. In this study, a multi-scale analysis scheme for simulating the micro contact printing process is proposed and some useful analysis results are presented. Using the slip-link model [1], the dependency of viscoelasticity on molecular weight of polymer stamp is predicted. Deformation behaviors of polymeric stamps are analyzed using finite element method based upon the predicted viscoelastic properties.

  • This paper deals with the calculation of contact resistance depending on the applied force by modeling surface roughness. The true contact surface area is made up of many asperities of varying heights which is close to Gaussian distribution. The mean square deviation and the mean value of the Gaussian distributed asperity heights were determined in this paper. The elastic deformation of the surface asperities according to the increasing of applied force were considered. The contact resistance was also calculated by using the Greenwood analysis.

  • In this study, the optimized design profiles between a seal ring and a seal seat of contacting seal units has been proposed based on the FEM computed results. The maximum temperatures, the thermal distortions in axial and radial directions, and maximum contact normal stresses between a seal ring and a seal seat have been analyzed for various contact sealing profiles. The FEM computed results present that the contact area between seal rings and seal seats is very important for a good tribological performance such as low friction heating, low wear, high contact normal stress in a primary sealing components. The seal surface model III in which has a small sealing contact area shows low dilatation of primary sealing components, and high contact stress between a seal ring and a seal seat. This model with small contact surface of a seal ring produces high friction heating and contact stress. But the model III produces very small deformations of contacting sealing surface because of high convection heat transfer by cooling water circulation around the seal ring surface. Thus, the analysis results recommend a short width of a primary sealing unit rather than a big width of contact surfaces of contacting seal units for reducing a leakage and axial deformation of primary seal components.
