  • The detection of open defects in CMOS SRAM has been a time consuming process. This paper proposes a new dynamic power supply current testing method to detect open defects in CMOS SRAM cells. By monitoring a dynamic current pulse during a transition write operation or a read operation, open defects can be detected. In order to measure the dynamic power supply current pulse, a current monitoring circuit with low hardware overhead is developed. Using the sensor, the new testing method does not require any additional test sequence. The results show that the new test method is very efficient compared with other testing methods. Therefore, the new testing method is very attractive.

  • This study was conducted to determine changes of voice after consuming raw egg, apple, and pear. Ten college students vocalized /a/ before and after having raw egg, apple, and pear. Dr. Speech was utilized to obtain acoustic changes of subjects' voice. A t-test was performed to analyze changes of voice before and after consuming raw egg, apple, and pear. No significant difference was found in acoustic measurements before and after having the 3 food items. However, the subjects seemed to show some improvements in jitter, HNR, and NNE in the order of raw egg, apple and pear even though they did not reach a statistical significance. It was concluded that a more systematic research paradigm was needed in order to objectively reject or substantiate the results of the current investigation.

  • Discrepancy between a power supply current and an actual "spiral" coil current makes the conventional 4-probe measurement of a critical current ($I_c$) of a no-insulation (NI) high temperature superconductor (HTS) coil inaccurate and time-consuming. This paper presents a fast and accurate approach for $I_c$ measurement of NI HTS coils. With an NI HTS coil energized at a constant ramping rate, a complete analytic expression for the spiral coil current was obtained from a first-order partial differential equation that derived from an equivalent circuit model of the NI coil. From the analytic solution, both spiral coil current and radial leak current can be obtained simultaneously, which enables fast and accurate measurement of the NI coil $I_c$. To verify the proposed approach, an NI double-pancake (DP) coil, wound with GdBCO tapes of $6mm{\times}0.1mm$, was constructed and its $I_c$ was repeatedly measured with various ramping rates in a bath of liquid nitrogen at 77 K. The measured results agreed well with the calculated ones, which validates the proposed approach to measure $I_c$ of an NI HTS coil.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of meeting the recommended levels of physical activity (PA) with health status and preventive health behavior in adults. Methods: A total of 5630 adults 18 years of age or older were included in this study. PA was assessed using a series of questions that categorized activities based on their metabolic equivalent values and then categorized individuals based on the reported frequency and duration of such activities. Participants reporting 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity PA per week were considered to have met the PA guidelines. Multiple logistic regression was used to model the relationships between meeting PA guidelines and health status and preventive health behavior, while controlling for confounding variables. Results: Overall, 53.9% (95% confidence interval [CI], 51.9 to 55.9%) of adults reported meeting the recommended levels of PA. Among adults with good general health, 56.9% (95% CI, 54.7 to 59.1%) reported meeting the recommended levels of PA versus 43.1% (95% CI, 40.9 to 45.3%) who did not. Adults who met the PA guidelines were significantly more likely not to report high cholesterol, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, arthritis, asthma, depression, or overweight. Furthermore, adults meeting the PA guidelines were significantly more likely to report having health insurance, consuming fruits daily, consuming vegetables daily, and not being a current cigarette smoker. Conclusions: In this study, we found meeting the current guidelines for PA to have a protective relationship with both health status and health behavior in adults. Health promotion programs should focus on strategies that help individuals meet the current guidelines of at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity PA.

  • In the air current pulverizing type grinding method, the blade wings fitted inside a casing are rotated at a high speed to generate a cornering air current, which facilitates the collision of materials with one another, leading to the pulverizing phenomenon. In contrast to mechanical grinding, grit pulverizing leads to fine grinding and less acid waste and degeneration of the material. Moreover, this approach prevents the loss of nutritional value, while allowing the milling grain to have an excellent texture. However, the existing air current pulverizing type machines consist of prefabricated blades, which cannot be rotated at a speed higher than 5,000 rpm. Consequently, the grinding process becomes time consuming with a low productivity. To overcome these problems, in this study, the shape and structure of the air current pulverizing type wings were optimized to allow rapid grinding at more than 8,000 rpm. Moreover, the optimal design for the ripening parts for the air current pulverizing type device was determined by performing a computational fluid dynamics analysis based on airflow analyses to produce machinery that can grinding materials to the order of micrometers.

  • Electrical damages to critical parts in rotation machinery have caused may machinery failures and hours of costly downtime. The problem of shaft currents generated in non-electrical machines have puzzled both users and manufacturers of these machines. The main solution for preventing electro- magnetic type damage is to demagnetize all of the machinery parts, however this is costly and time consuming. Therefore a thorough investigation into the causes and physical characteristics of electro- magnetic shaft currents is needed. In this paper, the self excitation theory was developed for a simple model, and axial flux Faraday disk machine surrounded by a long solenoid. Experimental tests were conducted to investigate the physical characteristics on an electromagnetic self excitation rig. The theory showed that the directions of both the shaft rotation and the coil turns should e identical if self excitation is to occur. From the tests, the electromagnetic type shaft current had both AC and DC components occurred at all vibration frequencies. This could point to the way to detect small instabilities or natural frequency locations by monitoring shaft currents.

  • A charge-pump circuit using a current-bypass technique, which suppresses charge sharing and reduces the sub-threshold currents, helps to decrease phase-locked loop (PLL) jitter without resorting to a feedback amplifier. The PLL shows no stability issues and no power-up problems, which may occur when a feedback amplifier is used. The PLL is implemented in 0.11-${\mu}m$ CMOS technology to achieve 0.856-ps RMS and 8.75-ps peak-to-peak jitter, which is almost independent of ambient temperature while consuming 4 mW from a 1.2-V supply.

  • This paper presents an advanced control technique for power density maximization of the Brushless DC (BLDC) generator by using the linear tracking method. In a generator of given rating, the weight and size of the system affect the fuel consumption directly. Therefore, power density is one of the most important issues in a stand-alone generator. BLDC generator has high power density in the machine point of view and additional increases of power density by control means can be expected. Conventional rectification methods cannot achieve the maximum power possible because of hon-optimal current waveforms. The optimal current waveform to maximize power density and minimize machine size and weight in a nonsinusoidal power supply system has been derived, incorporated in a control system, and verified by simulation and experimental work. A new simple algebraic method has been proposed to accomplish the proposed control without an FFT which is time consuming and complicated.
