  • In this study, the mechanical properties of resource-recycling concrete containing concrete sludge waste as main materials was compared depending on whether supercritical CO2 curing was applied for the realization of CCU technology. After supercritical CO2 curing, the compressive strength of the steam-cured specimen was lowered, but it was confirmed that the compressive strength of the underwater-cured specimen was improved.

  • Although fly ash possesses viable engineering properties, an overwhelming majority of fly ash from coal combustion is still placed in storage or disposal sites. Similarly, sludges generated from various water treatment operations are predominantly subjected to the fate of land disposal. To prepare sludges fur land disposal typically requires time consuming dewatering schemes, which can become extremely difficult to execute depending upon the composition of the sludge and its affinity for water. This study was undertaken to reuse fly ash and sludge as construction materials. This paper includes geotechnical properties of fly ash and fly ash-lime-sludge mixture and results of compaction test, UU-test, falling head test, leaching test and CBR test. The effect on mixing fly ash with sludge and lime and the effect of curing period and the results are obtained from this test.

  • Gas permeability of the solidified sewage sludge needs to be characterized in order to use as a large-scale landfill cover material. Four different types of the samples were prepared for gas permeability experiments: (1) granite soil, (2) dried sewage sludge, (3) solidified sewage mixed with slag and (4) solidified sewage mixed with granite soils. The experimental instrumentation and measurement devices were newly designed and created to effectively evaluate gas permeability of the samples.

  • Both rapid industrial development and society has achieved more comfortable life. But, behind this facts of this industrial development have current pictures that occur global warming and much more by-products by environmental pollution. Therefore, this study used BFS and CFA as by-products to reduce cement usage emitted at a high rate of $CO_2$ gas, to examine sludge recycling strategy more than 200,000ton emitted at local dyeing complex, we suggest basic data research about non-cement matrix properties of utilizing dyeing sludge carbide. As a result, the more dyeing sludge carbide replacement ratio gets higher, the more air content and flow rise. Also, as the dyeing sludge carbide replacement ratio increase more, flexural strength and compressive strength go down.

  • This study examines the ways to address environmental issues by utilizing activated loess to reduce the amount of cements that emit a large amount of carbon dioxide during the process of manufacturing, and by reusing the polysilicon sludge produced as a result of manufacturing polysilicon, one of the components for solar power generation panels. The findings of the experiment showed that the optimal replacement ratio of the polysilicon sludge is 20%, 35% for W/B, and 20% for the ratio of the fine aggregate addition. As it is deemed that utilizing the polysilicon sludge for reinforced concrete may lead to rebar corrosion due to the $CI^-$ contained in the sludge, it can be considered to use for unreinforced concrete or bricks.

  • It is required to propose an alternatives for appropriate sludge treatment owing to persistent construction of sewage treatment plant and increase of sewage sludge quantity. In order to treat sludge more efficiently, the methods which reduce the cost of sludge treatment have been studied such as sludge reduction and conditioning. Especially ozone treatment reduces solid quantity and improves separation of solid-liquid at the same time. Therefore ozone treatment have a positive effect on reduction and stabilization of sludge. So, this study applied ozone to sewage sludge and induced cell destruction of sludge. By comparing with the correlation between thickening and dewatering, and evaluating moisture content and solubilization of cake, this study verificates the effect of process improvement for ozone pre-treatment. In J-STP case, according to ozone dose solid flux increased about 12 times from $1kg/m^2{\cdot}h$ to $12kg/m^2{\cdot}h$. Also this plant were capable to shorten thickening time from 40 minutes to 6~7 minutes. Thus it is expected to reduce volume and retention time of thickener. On pH effect factor, dewatering at pH4 was more than at pH11, $3.05{\times}10^{11}$ and $3.82{\times}10^{11}(m/kg)$. But effect of pH was analogous to ozone, $2.81{\times}10^{11}(m/kg)$. The effect of pH on thickening was similar to law sludge, $0.68(kg/m^2{\cdot}h)$, and the effect of ozone injection on thickening was the biggest, $3.45(kg/m^2{\cdot}h)$. The COD solubilization rate improved from about 5 to 30%. So it is judged that we are able to utilize most solubilized sludge to another sewage treatment plants.

  • In this study, thermalpretreatment was used to solubilize organic matter contained in sewage sludge before acid fermentation. By thermal pretreatment, solubilization of particulate CODcr, carbohydrate and protein increased. By thermal treatment at $120^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes, CODcr solubilization efficiency of the primary sludge reached 8.3%. Meanwhile, for the secondary sludge, CODcr solubilization efficiency reached 16.5% because of high solubilization ratio of protein under the same pretreatment conditon. The results of anaerobic biodegradability test showed that both VFAs conversion ratio and hydrolysis rate of organic compounds in sewage sludge were improved by thermal pretreatment. Meanwhile, the optimum thermal pretreatment condition was varied with composition of organic compounds in sludge. In this study, the optimun thermal pretreatment condition of the primary sludge, containing high concentration of carbohydrate, was $80^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, for the secondary sludge, mainly composed of protein, the sludge treated at $120^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes showed the effective organic removal and VFAs production.

  • In order to investigate the feasibility of stone dust sludge as fine aggregate, an experimental study was performed on cement mortar with stone dust sludge. fresh mortar properties and strength with various stone dust sludge replacement ratios were estimated. the replacement ratio adopted in this study was 0, 10, 20, 30%. Flow, air content, and rheological properties were considered as properties of fresh mortar. Compressive strength and flexural tensile strength were measured for strength. The results are as follows. Higher amount of stone dust sludge caused reduction in slump and air content. In the rheological properties, both yield stress and plastic viscosity increased as stone dust sludge content increased up to 20% replacement ratio, but there were no remarkable difference between 20 and 30%. Yield stress increased drastically between 10 and 20%. Compressive and flexural tensile strength results indicated that the strength variation was not significant according to stone dust sludge content, but the strength gain in the early age by adding stone dust sludge was evident. the strength at the age of 28 days however did not show noticeable effect of adding stone dust sludge.

  • Ordinary heterotrophic organism (OHO) active biomass plays key roles in biological wastewater treatment processes. However, due to the lack of measurement techniques, the OHO active biomass exists hypothetically within the design and simulation of biological wastewater treatment processes. This research was purposed to develop a quick and easy quantifying technique for the OHO active biomass applying a modified batch aerobic growth test. Two nitrification-denitrification activated sludge systems, with 10- and 20-day sludge ages, were operated to provide well-cultured mixed liquor to the batch tests. A steady state design model was firstly applied to quantify the "theoretical" OHO active biomass concentration of the two parent systems. The mixed liquor from the parent systems was then inoculated to a batch growth test and a batch digestion test to estimate the "measured" OHO active biomass concentration in the mixed liquor. The measured OHO active biomass concentrations with the batch growth test and the batch digestion test were compared to the theoretical concentrations of the parent system. The measured concentrations with the batch growth test were generally smaller than the theoretical concentrations. However, the measured concentrations with the batch aerobic digestion tests showed a good correlation to the theoretical concentrations. Thus, a different microbial growth condition (i.e., a higher food/biomass ratio) in the batch growth test, compared to the parent system or the batch digestion test, was found to cause underestimation of the OHO active biomass concentrations.
