Causes of Delay in Construction Projects in Bangladesh

  • Construction delay is a common problem worldwide, which is considered as one of the main reasons for project failure. Bangladesh construction industry is no exception. This study investigated the main causes of delay in large building construction projects in Bangladesh. A questionnaire survey was conducted to determine the causes of delay from owners, consultants, and contractors of large building construction projects. About 70 respondents participated in the survey. Using the importance index analysis, the study identified 10 most important causes of delay from a list of 30 different causes. Ten most important causes were: (1) lack of experienced construction manager, (2) lowest bidder selection, (3) funding shortage by owner, (4) lack of proper management, (5) improper planning and scheduling, (6) lack of skilled workers, (7) site constraints, (8) contractors' cash flow problems during construction, (9) escalation of resources price, and (10) contractors' excessive workload. Furthermore, Kruskal-Wallis test indicates that there is no significant variation exists among the three group of respondents, ie owners, consultants and contractors.

  • Underground construction requires long construction duration and a variety of equipment, and environmental management and improvement of its activities are considered necessary. For the purpose of the environmental improvement of underground construction activities, the appropriate development of technologies to reduce generated pollutants is mandatory. However, the analysis of the needs of technology development and the evaluation of development priorities should take precedence. In this research, the needs for the improvement of each construction activity are analyzed as a preliminary study for a proposed technology development plan to improve the environmental performance of underground construction. Firstly, environmental problem factors caused by underground construction activities are determined while underground construction types, methods, and activities are classified. A questionnaire survey to determine the needs for the improvement of each activity is then carried out. The survey indicated that the most urgent activity to be improved is that of cutting excavation, which causes environmental problems associated with flying dust. This study could be used as a basis for a technology development plan for the environmental improvement of underground construction activities. The result of this study, the priority of improvement needs, contributes to the effective allocation of a limited Research and Development (R&D) budget.

  • Recently, as the problem of the traditional on-site labor-intensive construction production method has been raised due to changes in construction work labor and site conditions, the OSC method is gradually spreading as an alternative to this. Even in apartment houses, the application of the PC method is expanding centered on the underground parking lot, but the high cost structure is a problem compared to the conventional formwork method. In this study, factors affecting the calculation of construction cost in the economic evaluation, which are the core of determining the construction method for apartment buildings, are derived through domestic and foreign literature review and expert advice, the importance was analyzed through an opinion survey targeting industry experts. The measures to reduce construction cost were mainly derived from the improvement of the design and manufacturing process. It is expected that the factors affecting the construction cost and improvement measures of the PC method derived from this study will serve as a direction for technology development to spread the application of the PC method for apartment houses in the future.

  • We need the contingency cost in order to deal with the uncertainty to be accompanied inevitably at the construction and an every kind risk not to forecast in advance. And also the contingency colt needed for the change order and we need it for reduction of the delay and reduce the trouble between owner and constructor. This study, through checking and analyzing the risk factor, in the step of domestic construction, suggests optimal management reserve to specific business about the contract type and the scale. The main results of this research are summarized as follow. First, I investigated the recognition about the contingency cost, grasped the risk to be happened at the construction step and found out the frequency occurrence, through making up question to engineer are carrying out their job in the domestic construction. Second, I computed optimal contingency cost rate by the statistics investigation, and proposed an improvement plan and problem when compute a contingency cost.

  • The Corrugated steel plate structure(CPS) can be applied to construction sites with various purposes, and the merits of CPS such as economical efficiency and swiftness can be utilized when it is constructed properly in consideration of its characteristics. However, in Korea, since the history of corrugated steel plate culvert is relatively short, there are not enough design standards. This research is prepared for finding out the causes through examining and analyzing the problems based on the examples from the existing constructions. Moreover, this study can be utilized in preparing designs and design standards of corrugated steel plate culvert in the future and devising prevention measures and complementary measures by studying construction methods considering features of construction sites and circumstances, several points to be considered while carrying out construction works and prevention measures of a problem with the existing structures.

  • In today, there has been an increase in the construction of agricultural facilities due to the development in agricultural technology. Agricultural facilities are becoming bigger and higher to plant various agriculture. This study analyzes the construction and maintenance problems in agricultural facilities. The results of this survey on the status of agricultural facilities are presented. Firstly, the construction cost is most important factor in agricultural facilities. Secondly, Materials durability is important factor in selecting the facilities. Third, safety in facilities is also important factor. The results of this research are greenhouse is lack of the law of contract and the performance and need for the construction process supervision.

Bayesian Model for Cost Estimation of Construction Projects

  • Bayesian network is a form of probabilistic graphical model. It incorporates human reasoning to deal with sparse data availability and to determine the probabilities of uncertain cases. In this research, bayesian network is adopted to model the problem of construction project cost. General information, time, cost, and material, the four main factors dominating the characteristic of construction costs, are incorporated into the model. This research presents verify a model that were conducted to illustrate the functionality and application of a decision support system for predicting the costs. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is applied to estimate parameter distributions. Furthermore, it is shown that not all the parameters are normally distributed. In addition, cost estimates based on the Gibbs output is performed. It can enhance the decision the decision-making process.
