  • Construction industry is one of the most significant sector in national economic, but the portion of construction has been falling regularly with the regional development. In spite of decrease in economic portion, role of construction industry does not changed irrespective of development, as the foundation of development. To distinguish each state of the maturity, countries are grouped on GDP per capita, than compared with variance of GVA in construction and GFCF per GDP as level of construction industry. GVAc% and GFCF% shows corn-shaped plotting in increase of GDP per capita, and each value converge to around 20% and 5% as GDP per capita increase. The definition of maturity is consist of 4 stages; pre-developing, ascending, stabilization, and maturement. Maturity of construction industry is a term of broad sense of construction industry that is easily to figure current state of regional construction and shows what normal condition of construction is in regional economy.

  • With the current global financial crisis, Korea's economic situation involves a great deal of uncertainty. As the construction industry in Korea has traditionally been one of the country's strongest engines of economic development, it is crucial to understand its current status when establishing government policy or corporate goals. Utilizing a variety of statistical data related to construction that has been published in Korea, this study analyzes the current status and performance of the industry in terms of technological development. Although it was found that the construction industry in Korea is currently unstable due to the influence of the global financial crisis, it is now expected to recover quickly thanks to the increase in the number of construction contracts in foreign countries. In addition, when the performance of national research and development is realized, it is expected that new construction technologies will contribute to the recovery of the Korean construction industry. Despite the benefits of construction contracts in foreign countries, there are harmful practices in the industry that need to be addressed, including the excessively fierce competition among domestic construction companies.

  • Information Technology (IT) makes a great contribution towards improvement of productivity in construction industry. Because most of researches of construction industry's IT are focused on the whole field of the industry or development of information system, however, these have no regard for conditions in fields. Thus, this study proposes the requirements in order to improve the productivity and efficiency of field execution of construction industry. To achieve this aim, the surveys are conducted of the problems and conditions of IT application on site workers and managers. As a result, the followings are suggested: (1) user training should be exercised continuously, (2) infrastructure of IT constructed, (3) total management system of field execution developed, and (4) the development of IT system focused on fields. Therefore, this study provides meaningful proposal that can be set up basic direction toward IT investment and IT system development.

  • The construction industry is a representative high levels of hazardous work environment, and the number of disasters in the construction industry is the highest compared to other industries. Information & Communication Technology(ICT) convergence technologies are being introduced worldwide, and this study considers ICT-based safety management cases at domestic and foreign, resulting in a list of technologies to recognize and resolve to construction site hazards. Technologies such as 「Development of hazard map considering cause, age, proficiency, type and timing of accident in construction industry」, 「Development of hazard map-based accident prediction platform using AI」, 「Development of smart safety management plan for whole construction work cycle」, 「Development of intelligent safety devices and smart safety equipment for mitigating hazard factors」 were derived as smart construction technologies that could solve this problem.

  • In view of the labor-intensive characteristics of the construction industry and the persistent negative image, the problems of continuous aging and manpower shortage in the domestic construction industry are becoming more and more serious, which must be solved for the survival of the domestic construction industry. China has made certain achievements in prefabricated buildings. Through this research, we describe the development process of China's prefabricated buildings in different stages, and analyze the necessary policy promotion and standard support in the development of prefabricated buildings. Analyze and examine the necessary conditions for China's prefabricated building achievements and success factors, and make better proposals for the development of the construction industry in South Korea.

  • Continuous development of construction industry and enhancement of its global competitiveness must be supported by research and development(R&D) for new technology. However, the R&D investment in Korean construction industry is lower than those in other industries. The R&D investment by Korean government is also insufficient comparing with other governments. This paper investigates the R&D investment status in Korean construction industry and reviews the outcomes of the R&D in relation with construction new technology and patent. Based on the investigations of the present status, new direction of the construction R&D is suggested.

  • Nowadays, BIM(Building Information Modeling) technology has been slowly accepted and developed around the world, making smart construction possible. Many countries are also actively promoting the comprehensive application of BIM and changing the traditional construction methods of the construction industry. This study reviews foreign and domestic literature reviews on BIM application barriers and smart construction applications, providing a theoretical basis for Chinese construction enterprises to reduce or eliminate BIM application barriers. Based on the common feature of policies or strategies that promote the development of smart construction in developed countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore, the deficiencies of China's smart construction policies for construction enterprises are analyzed. Moreover, according to the literature review of the development status of China's construction industry, the SWOT analysis matrix of China's smart construction strategy is obtained. Finally, based on the SWOT matrix analysis results, combined with the development status of China's construction industry and the obstacles faced by smart construction, the portfolio strategies and recommendations for the development of smart construction are proposed in this work. These portfolio strategies and recommendations can provide a reference value for construction enterprises.
