  • Fog computing has become a popular concept in the application of internet of things (IoT). With the superiority in better service providing, the edge cloud has become an attractive solution to IoT networks. The data outsourcing scheme of IoT devices demands privacy protection as well as computation verification since the lightweight devices not only outsource their data but also their computation. Existing solutions mainly deal with the operations over encrypted data, but cannot support the computation verification in the same time. In this paper, we propose a data outsourcing scheme based on an encrypted database system with linear computation as well as efficient query ability, and enhance the interlayer program in the original system with homomorphic message authenticators so that the system could perform computational verifying. The tools we use to construct our scheme have been proven secure and valid. With our scheme, the system could check if the cloud provides the correct service as the system asks. The experiment also shows that our scheme could be as effective as the original version, and the extra load in time is neglectable.

  • Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) envelope glycoprotein is synthesized as a 160 KDa precursor, gp160, that is cleaved by a cellular protease to form the gp120 and gp41 subunits. Mammalian expression vectors were designed that are capable of efficient expression of various mutant envelope glycoproteins derived from a molecular clone of HIV-1. To construct these vectors, one type of mutation was made at the gp120-gp41 cleavage site by oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis. And another mutation was made to change amino acids in the membrane spanning region of HIV-1 gp41 important for membrane anchorage. Next, these two mutations were combined to generate a vector to have double mutations in cleavage site and membrane-spanning region. These mutants were transiently expressed in mammalian cells. The effect of these mutations on envelope glycoprotein synthesis, proteolytic processing and secretion was determined. In addition, cell surface expression and ability of the glycoprotein to induce syncytium formation were examined. This study provides a mammalian expression system that is capable of efficient expression and secretion of soluble gp160.

  • A scheme to control the laser power and the exposure time was studied to fabricate precise microstructures using the nanostereolithography (nSL) process. Some recent works have shown that a three-dimensional (3D) microstructure can be fabricated by the photopolymerizing process which is induced by two-photon absorption (TPA) with a femtosecond pulse laser. TPA provides the ability to confine photochemical and physical reactions within the order of laser wavelength, so neardiffraction limit features can be produced. In the nSL process, voxels are continuously generated to form a layer and then another layer is stacked in the normal direction of a plane to construct a 3D structure. Thus, fabrication of a voxel with low aspect ratio and small diameter is one of the most important parameters for fabricating precise 3D microstructures. In this work, the mechanism of a voxel formation is studied and a scheme on the control of laser power and exposure for minimizing aspect ratio of a voxel is proposed.

  • Electricity price prediction plays a crucial part in making the schedule and managing the risk to the competitive electricity market participants. However, it is a difficult and challenging task owing to the characteristics of the nonlinearity, non-stationarity and uncertainty of the price series. This study proposes a hybrid improved strategy which incorporates data preprocessor components and a forecasting engine component to enhance the forecasting accuracy of the electricity price. In the developed forecasting procedure, the Seasonal Adjustment (SA) method and the Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) technique are synthesized as the data preprocessing component; the Coupled Simulated Annealing (CSA) optimization method and the Least Square Support Vector Regression (LSSVR) algorithm construct the prediction engine. The proposed hybrid approach is verified with electricity price data sampled from the power market of New South Wales in Australia. The simulation outcome manifests that the proposed hybrid approach obtains the observable improvement in the forecasting accuracy compared with other approaches, which suggests that the proposed combinational approach occupies preferable predication ability and enough precision.

  • As the number of legacy database systems and the size of data to manipulate have been vastly increased, it has become more difficult and complex to analyze characteristics of data. To improve the efficiency of data analysis and help administrators to make decisions in business life, BI(Business Intelligence) system is used. To construct data warehouse and cube from legacy database systems makes it easy and fast to transform raw data into integrated and categorized meaningful information. In this paper, we built a BI system for an University administration. Several source system databases were integrated to data warehouse to build data cubes. The implemented BI system shows much faster data analysis and reporting ability than the manipulation in legacy systems. It is especially efficient in multi dimensional data analysis, nonetheless in single dimensional analysis.

  • This paper presents an original approach for solving short-term power scheduling in extended power system with two fuels in a unit and a limited fuel using Lagrangian relaxations. The underlying model incorporates the full set of costs and constraints including setup, production, ramping, and operational status, and takes the form of a mixed integer nonlinear control problem. Moreover, the mathematical model developed includes two fuels in a unit and a limited fuel, regulation reserve requirements of prespecified group of units. Lagrangian relaxation is used to disaggregate the model by generator into separate subproblems which are then solved with a nested dynamic program including empirical knowledges. The strength of the methodology lies partially in its ability to construct good feasible solutions from information provided by the dual. Thus, the need for branch-and-bound is eliminated. In addition, the inclusion of two fuels in a unit and a limited fuel provides new insight into the limitations of current techniques. Computational experience with the proposed algorithm indicates that Problems containing up to 23 units including 8 unit used two fuels and 24 time periods can be readily solved in reasonable times. Duality gaps of less than 4% were achieved.

  • The development of a practical technology intelligence system requires a knowledge base that structures the core information and its relationship distilled from large volumes of technical data. Previous studies have mainly focused on the methodological approaches for technology opportunities, while little attention has been paid to constructing a practical knowledge base. Therefore, this study proposes a procedure to construct a function-based knowledge base for technology intelligence. We define the product-function-technology relationship and subsequently present the detailed steps for the knowledge base construction. The knowledge base, which is constructed analyzing 1110582 patents between 2009 and 2013 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office database, contains the functional knowledge of products and technologies and the relationship between products and technologies. This study is the first attempt to develop a large-scale knowledge base using the concept of function and has the ability to serve as a basis not only for furthering technology opportunity analysis methods but also for developing practical technology intelligence systems.

  • We displayed four types of Solanum nigrum metallothionein (SMT) for the first time on the surface of Saccharomyces cerevisiae using an α-agglutinin-based display system. The SMT genes were amplified by RT-PCR. The plasmid pYES2 was used to construct the expression vector. Transformed yeast strains were confirmed by PCR amplification and custom sequencing. Surface-expressed metallothioneins were indirectly indicated by the enhanced cadmium sorption capacity. Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used to examine the concentration of Cd2+ in this study. The transformed yeast strains showed much higher resistance ability to Cd2+ compared with the control. Strikingly, their Cd2+ accumulation was almost twice as much as that of the wild-type yeast cells. Furthermore, surface-engineered yeast strains could effectively adsorb ultra-trace cadmium and accumulate Cd2+ under a wide range of pH levels, from 3 to 7, without disturbing the Cu2+ and Hg2+. Four types of surfaceengineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains were constructed and they could be used to purify Cd2+-contaminated water and adsorb ultra-trace cadmium effectively. The surface-engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains would be useful tools for the bioremediation and biosorption of environmental cadmium contaminants.

  • Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are unique materials with a paramount potential for various applications in bridges. The novelty of this material lies in its ability to undergo large deformations and return to its undeformed shape through stress removal (superelasticity) or heating (shape memory effect). In particular, Ni-Ti alloys have distinct thermomechanical properties including superelasticity, shape memory effect, and hysteretic damping. SMA along with sensing devices can be effectively used to construct smart Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridges that can detect and repair damage, and adapt to changes in the loading conditions. SMA can also be used to retrofit existing deficient bridges. This includes the use of external post-tensioning, dampers, isolators and/or restrainers. This paper critically examines the fundamental characteristics of SMA and available sensing devices emphasizing the factors that control their properties. Existing SMA models are discussed and the application of one of the models to analyze a bridge pier is presented. SMA applications in the construction of smart bridge structures are discussed. Future trends and methods to achieve smart bridges are also proposed.
