The paper considers a spectrum sharing cognitive radio (CR) network coexisting with a primary network under the average interference power constraint. In particular, the secondary user (SU) is assumed to carry delay-sensitive services and thus shall satisfy a given delay quality-of-service (QoS) constraint. The secondary receiver is also assumed to be equipped with multiple antennas to perform maximal ratio combining (MRC) to enhance SU performance. We investigate the effective capacity of the SU with MRC diversity under aforementioned constraints in Nakagami fading environments. Particularly, we derive the optimal power allocation to achieve the maximum effective capacity of the SU, and further derive the effective capacity in closed-form. In addition, we further obtain the closed-form expressions for the effective capacities under three widely used power and rate adaptive transmission schemes, namely, optimal simultaneous power and rate adaptation (opra), truncated channel inversion with fixed rate (tifr) and channel inversion with fixed rate without truncation (cifr). Numerical results supported by simulations are presented to consolidate our studies. The impacts on the effective capacity of various system parameters such as the number of antennas, the average interference power constraint and the delay QoS constraint are investigated in detail. It is shown that MRC diversity can significantly improve the effective capacity of the SU especially for cifr transmission scheme.
Transmission system has been well studied since long time and power system techniques of distribution system are more or less derived from transmission system. However, unlike transmission systems, many practical issues are encountered in the distribution system. Considerable amount of error is observed in voltage obtained from the Feeder Remote Terminal Units (FRTUs) measured by the pole mounted PTs along the distribution feeder. Load uncertainty is also an issue in distribution system. Further, penetration of Distributed Generators (DGs) creates voltage variations in the system. Hybrid radial/ loop distribution system also make it complicated to handle distribution system. How these constraints to be handled under Distribution Automation (DAS) environment in order to obtain error free voltage is described in this paper and therefore, a new approach of voltage error correction technique has been proposed. The proposed technique utilizes reliable data from substation and the FRTUs installed in DAS. The proposed technique adopts an iterative process for voltage error correction. It has been tested and proved accurate not only for conventional radial systems but also for loop distribution systems.

In this paper, a half-scaled substructure test was performed to evaluate the buckling and structural safety of an existing transmission tower subjected to wind load. A loading scheme was devised to reproduce the dead and wind loads of a prototype transmission tower, which uses a triangular jig that is mounted on the reduced model to which the similarity law of a half length was applied. As a result of the preliminary numerical analysis carried out to evaluate the stability of a specimen for the design load, is was confirmed that the calculated axial forces of tower leg members were distributed to $80{\sim}90%$ of an admissible buckling load. When the substructured transmission tower was loaded by 270% of its maximum admissible buckling load, it was failed due to the local buckling that is occurred in joints with weak constraints for out-of-plane behavior of leg members. By inspection of load-displacement curves, displacements and strains of members, it is considered that this local buckling was due to additional eccentric force by unbalanced deformation because the time that is reached to yielding stress due to the bending moment is different at each point of a same section.
This paper presents a practical methodology that can analysis power flow and marginal factors based on optimal power flow (OPF) of power systems under restructuring environment. First of all, to evaluate useful marginal factors, nonlinear optimization problems of minimum fuel cost and minimum transmission loss are formulated and solved by nonlinear primal-dual interior point method. Here, physical constraints considered in the optimization problems are the limits of bus voltage. line overloading, and real & reactive power generation. Also, an evaluation method of marginal price and marginal transmission loss is presented based on sensitivities calculated by the two OPF problems. Especially, to reflect the cost related to transmission losses in the competitive electricity market, an analysis method of MLF (marginal loss factor) is pro-posed. Numerical results on IEEE RTS 24 show that the proposed algorithm is effective and useful for analysis of power market price.
This paper proposes a Modified Particle Swarm Optimization with Time Varying Acceleration Coefficients (MPSO-TVAC) for solving economic load dispatch (ELD) problem. Due to prohibited operating zones (POZ) and ramp rate limits of the practical generators, the ELD problems become nonlinear and nonconvex optimization problem. Furthermore, the ELD problem may be more complicated if transmission losses are considered. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is one of the famous heuristic methods for solving nonconvex problems. However, this method may suffer to trap at local minima especially for multimodal problem. To improve the solution quality and robustness of PSO algorithm, a new best neighbour particle called 'rbest' is proposed. The rbest provides extra information for each particle that is randomly selected from other best particles in order to diversify the movement of particle and avoid premature convergence. The effectiveness of MPSO-TVAC algorithm is tested on different power systems with POZ, ramp-rate limits and transmission loss constraints. To validate the performances of the proposed algorithm, comparative studies have been carried out in terms of convergence characteristic, solution quality, computation time and robustness. Simulation results found that the proposed MPSO-TVAC algorithm has good solution quality and more robust than other methods reported in previous work.
This paper proposes a dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm with adaptive maximum transmission window (DBA-AMTW) to increase channel utilization in Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs). A polling mechanism in EPON determines channel utilization and puts constraints on DBA algorithm and scheduling. DBA algorithms based on interleaved polling with stop (IPS) allocate transmission windows to optical network units (ONU) considering requests of all ONUs. However channel idle time when any ONU does not transmit packets decreases channel utilization. Proposed DBA-AMTW improves efficiency of a network and allocates transmission windows effectively by appropriate DBA computation from REPORT messages of all ONUs. An adaptive maximum transmission window for each ONU determined by a DBA computation in the previous scheduling cycle. Simulation results show that the proposed DBA algorithm improves performance of throughput and average delay time.

This paper proposes a new optimal unit commitment algorithm for the rational operation of electric power systems. Especially, the algorithm is improved by considering transmission line capacity limits and load forecasting uncertainty with the consideration of the participation factors of each units, so that the method becomes more reliable and flexible one. The transmission losses are considered by using updated penalty factors obtained from the constant matrixes of the fast decoupled load flow method, the system loads are distributed at each buses, and the several necessary operational constraints are also considered for the purpose of presenting a more practicable scheme. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been demonstrated by applying to the 23-bus model system.
The smart substation is the heart of a transmission system, which is particularly emphasized as the most significant composition of smart grids in China. In order to assess the functionality performance of substation technologies, this paper presents methods used to identify the most promising solutions for smart substation design and to evaluate the technical levels of available technologies. The multi-index optimization model is presented to address the issue of smart substation planning. A mathematical model of the planning decision problem is established with multiple objectives consisting of economic, reliability, and green key indices, and many kinds of concerns including physical and environmentally friendly operations are formulated as a set of constraints. With respect to the assessment of the technical level regarding integration of advanced technologies into a substation, a modified grey whitenization weight function is adopted to structure a novel grey clustering method. The proposed grey clustering approach is used to overcome the difficulty of insufficient quantitative assessment capacity for traditional methods. The evaluation of technical effects provides the classification definition for the development phase and the maturity level of the smart substation. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches in planning decision-making and evaluation of construction efforts is demonstrated with case studies involving the actual smart substation projects of Wenchongkou substation in China Southern Power Grid (CSG) and Mengzi substation in State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC).

Configuring optimization of wireless sensor networks, which can improve the network performance such as utilization efficiency and network lifetime with minimal energy, has received considerable attention in recent years. In this paper, a cross layer optimal approach is proposed for multi-source linear network and grid network under Rayleigh block-fading channels, which not only achieves an optimal utility but also guarantees the end-to-end reliability. Specifically, in this paper, we first strictly present the optimization method for optimal nodal number $N^*$, nodal placement $d^*$ and nodal transmission structure $p^*$ under constraints of minimum total energy consumption and minimum unit data transmitting energy consumption. Then, based on the facts that nodal energy consumption is higher for those nodes near the sink and those nodes far from the sink may have remaining energy, a cross layer optimal design is proposed to achieve balanced network energy consumption. The design adopts lower reliability requirement and shorter transmission distance for nodes near the sink, and adopts higher reliability requirement and farther transmission distance for nodes far from the sink, the solvability conditions is given as well. In the end, both the theoretical analysis and experimental results for performance evaluation show that the optimal design indeed can improve the network lifetime by 20-50%, network utility by 20% and guarantee desire level of reliability.
Real-time application programs have synchronization constraints which need to be met between media-data. Synchronization method represents feedback method including virtual client-side buffer. This buffer is used in buffer level method. It is client-leading synchronization that is absorbing variable transmission delay time and that is synchronizing by feedback control. It is the important factor for playback rate and QoS if the buffer level is normal or not. To solve the problems, we can control the start of transmission in multimedia server by appling filtering, control and network evaluation function. Synchronization method is processing for smooth presentation without cut-off while media is playing out. When audio frame which is master media is in high threshold buffer level we decrease play out time gradually, otherwise we increase it slowly.
