In this paper we present methodology for parameters identification of constitutive model which is able to present behavior of a connection between two members in a structure. Such a constitutive model for frame connections can be cast in the most general form of the Timoshenko beam, which can present three failure modes. The first failure mode pertains to the bending in connection, which is defined as coupled plasticity-damage model with nonlinear softening. The second failure mode is seeking to capture the shearing of connection, which is defined as plasticity with linear hardening and nonlinear softening. The third failure mode pertains to the diffuse failure in the members; excluding it leads to linear elastic constitutive law. Theoretical formulation of this Timoshenko beam model and its finite element implementation are presented in the second section. The parameter identification procedure that will allow us to define eighteen unknown parameters is given in Section 3. The proposed methodology splits identification in three phases, with all details presented in Section 4 through three different examples. We also present the real experimental results. The conclusions are stated in the last section of the paper.
Electrohydraulic forming (EHF) process is a high speed forming process that utilizes the electric energy discharge in fluid-filled chamber to deform a sheet material. This process is completed in a very short time of less than 1ms. Therefore, finite element analysis is essential to observe the deformation mechanism of the material in detail. In addition, to perform the numerical simulation of EHF, the material properties obtained from the high-speed status, not quasi static conditions, should be applied. In this study, to obtain the parameters in the constitutive equation of Al 6061-T6 at high strain rate condition, a surrogate model using an artificial neural network (ANN) technique was employed. Using the results of the numerical simulation with free-bulging die in LS-DYNA, the surrogate model was constructed by ANN technique. By comparing the z-displacement with respect to the x-axis position in the experiment with the z-displacement in the ANN model, the parameters for the smallest error are obtained. Finally, the acquired parameters were validated by comparing the results of the finite element analysis, the ANN model and the experiment.
A horizontal cyclic test was carried out to study the seismic performance of lightweight aggregate concrete filled steel tube (LACFST). The constitutive and hysteretic model of core lightweight aggregate concrete (LAC) was proposed for finite element simulation. The stress and strain changes of the steel tube and concrete filled inside were measured in the experiment, and the failure mode, hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, and strain curve of the test specimens were obtained. The influence of axial compression ratio, diameter-thickness ratio and material strength were analysed based on finite element model. The results show that the hysteresis curve of LACFST indicated favourable ductility, energy dissipation, and seismic performance. The LACFST failed when the concrete in the bottom first crushed and the steel tube then bulged, thus axial force imposed by prestressing was proved to be feasible. The proposed constitutive model and hysteretic model of LAC under the constraint of its steel tube was reliable. The bearing capacity and ductility of the specimen increase significantly with increasing thickness of the steel tube. The bearing capacity of the member improves while the ductility and energy dissipation performance slightly decreased with the increasing strength of the steel and concrete.
The deformation and strength of brittle rocks are significantly influenced by the crack closure behavior. The relationship between the strength and deformation of rocks under uniaxial loading is the foundation for design and assessment of such scenarios. The concept of relative crack closure strain was proposed to describe the influence of the crack closure behavior on the deformation and strength of rocks. Considering the crack compaction effect, a new damage constitutive model was developed based on accumulated AE counts. First, a damage variable based on the accumulated AE counts was introduced, and the damage evolution equations for the four types of brittle rocks were then derived. Second, a compaction coefficient was proposed to describe the compaction degree and a correction factor was proposed to correct the error in the effective elastic modulus instead of the elastic modulus of the rock without new damage. Finally, the compaction coefficient and correction factor were used to modify the damage constitutive model obtained using the Lemaitre strain equivalence hypothesis. The fitted results of the models were then compared with the experimental data. The results showed that the uniaxial compressive strength and effective elastic modulus decrease with an increase in the relative crack closure strain. The values of the damage variables increase exponentially with strains. The modified damage constitutive equation can be used to more accurately describe the compressive deformation (particularly the compaction stage) of the four types of brittle rocks, with a coefficient of determination greater than 0.9.
High Deborah or Weissenberg number problems in viscoelastic flow modeling have been known formidably difficult even in the inertialess limit. There exists almost no result that shows satisfactory accuracy and proper mesh convergence at the same time. However recently, quite a breakthrough seems to have been made in this field of computational rheology. So called matrix-logarithm (here we name it tensor-logarithm) formulation of the viscoelastic constitutive equations originally written in terms of the conformation tensor has been suggested by Fattal and Kupferman (2004) and its finite element implementation has been first presented by Hulsen (2004). Both the works have reported almost unbounded convergence limit in solving two benchmark problems. This new formulation incorporates proper polynomial interpolations of the logarithm for the variables that exhibit steep exponential dependence near stagnation points, and it also strictly preserves the positive definiteness of the conformation tensor. In this study, we present an alternative procedure for deriving the tensor-logarithmic representation of the differential constitutive equations and provide a numerical example with the Leonov model in 4:1 planar contraction flows. Dramatic improvement of the computational algorithm with stable convergence has been demonstrated and it seems that there exists appropriate mesh convergence even though this conclusion requires further study. It is thought that this new formalism will work only for a few differential constitutive equations proven globally stable. Thus the mathematical stability criteria perhaps play an important role on the choice and development of the suitable constitutive equations. In this respect, the Leonov viscoelastic model is quite feasible and becomes more essential since it has been proven globally stable and it offers the simplest form in the tensor-logarithmic formulation.
The finite element analysis is one of the representative methods for predicting the materials behavior for experiments that are difficult to perform empirically. Constitutive equations are essential for reducing computation time and sharing data because they enable finite element analysis simulations through simple formulae. However, it is difficult to derive accurate flow curves for all materials as most constitutive equations are not formulated based on their physical meaning. Also, even if the constitutive equation is a good representation of the flow curve to the experimental results, some fundamental issues remain unresolved, such as the effect of mesh size on the calculation results. In this study, a new constitutive equation was proposed to predict various materials by modifying the combined Swift-Voce model, and the calculation results with various mesh sizes were compared to better simulate the experimental results.
The George Massey immersed tunnel passes the Fraser River near Vancouver, Western Canada. In this paper, dynamic analysis of the tunnel on sandy soils was performed using an effective stress constitutive model called UBCSAND. This model is able to calculate pore pressure rise and resulting tunnel deformation due to cyclic loading. Centrifuge tests conducted at RPI are used to verify the model performance. Centrifuge tests consist of 3 models: Model 1 is designed for an original ground condition, Model 2 for a ground improvement by compaction method, Model 3 for a ground improvement by gravel drainage. The results of centrifuge Model 1 are presented and compared with predictions of UBCSAND model. This model well captured the results of centrifuge test and therefore can be used to predict dynamic behavior of similar tunnels or underground structures on sandy soils.
Dynamic deformation behavior under the high strain rate loading condition obtained with the aid of Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) technique is simulated by DYNA2D (an hydrodynamic code). A constitutive equation such as Johnson-Cook model is used by adjusting various parameters to fit experimentally determined dynamic stress-strain relationship.
In the present study, in order to apply a cyclic viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model to multi-layered ground conditions during large earthquake, the numerical simulations of the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake at Port Island, Kobe, Japan, were performed by the seismic respons analysis. From the seismic response analysis, it was verified that a cyclic viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model can give a good description of the damping characteristics of clay accurately during large event which induces plastic deformation in large strain range.
