Recently, the case to construct the structure on the soft clayey ground has increased and in order to the reduction of the cost of construction and maintenance on the social infrastructure facilities we have been trying to improve the soft clayey ground using the existing methods such as the pre-loading method and the vertical drain method. Like this, when various ground improvement methods are applied on the soft clayey ground, a long-term consolidation settlement will be key issue due to low permeability coefficient of cohesive soil. According to existing research results that relate to the consolidation settlement, the loading periods for existing the standard consolidation test (Oedometer test) to obtain the consolidation parameters are needed for minimum ten days or more. Therefore, in this study, the standard consolidation test (24 hours step-loading) and constant strain rate consolidation test changed by strain rate was performed using the remolded marine clay on Gwangyang bay composed of a soft clayey ground of the south-west coast. From the laboratory test results, the characteristics of compression, strain-effective stress relations by constant strain rate and the variation characteristic of the pore water pressure by different of loading speed and the relation between consolidation parameters and constant strain rate are compared and analyzed.

This study performed to establish tile characteristics of constant rate of strain consolidation(CRSC) tests. The values obtained by the CRCS tests were compared with oedometer tests. From the comparision of the results of oedometer and CRSC tests for soft soil from Haenam, Korea, it was concluded that. 1. When rate of strain is 0.9mm/hr, compression curve of CRSC test was not coincided with those of tile oedometer test, then preconsolidation stress was larger than those of other rates of strain. 2. Permeabilities from CRSC tests and direct measurements were about same each other, but permeabilities from Oedometer tests were large than those from others.
Continuous loading is applied the sample has been developed to overcome some of the problems associated with the incremental loading consolidation test. Therefore, it is able to reduce the test time and provide a well defined the curve of effective stress versus strain due to continuous stress-strain points. Also, the constant rate of strain consolidation(CRSC) test has been accepted widely as a standard method in foreign countries because of its many advantages. However, in Korea the CRSC test has not been used in engineering practice and experimentally verified. Because there is not a precise criterion of testing despite consolidation characteristics are influenced on strain rate and Pore pressure ratio. Consequently, it is difficult to apply in engineering practice. In this study, artificial neural networks are applied to the estimation of th proper strain rate and pore pressure ratio of the CRSC test. This study shows the possibility of utilizing the artificial neural networks model of estimation of the strain rate and pore pressure ratio in the CRSC test.
In this study, using the CRS consolidation tests on reconstituted marine clay, the characteristics of C$\sub$v/, k, e and $\varepsilon$, the anisotropic characteristics of specimen according to the rate of strain were estimated. Also, the validity of the Wissa et al.(1971) consolidation theory on CRS(Constant Rate of Strain) consolidation tests were reviewed. From that results, it was shown that the value of C$\sub$v/, k and u$\sub$b/ was increased as the rate of strain was increased. While the difference of the value( C$\sub$v/, k and u$\sub$b/) between vertically reconstituted specimen and horizontally reconstituted specimen became small as the rate of strain was increased. It is known that k is different due to the hydraulic gradient(i) during the CRS consolidation tests. The subject of this study is to distinguish steady state from transient state in CRS consolidation tests. Consequently, the difference of the value(C$\sub$v/ and k) is higher in case of vertically reconstituted specimen than horizontally reconstituted specimen.
In this paper, the testing cell and the related theory far the interpretation of constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation test results in case of radial drainage were developed. The proposed method makes it possible to evaluate consolidation characteristics of clayey soil rapidly and accurately. To investigate the application of the developed testing device and theory, CRS consolidation tests and incremental loading(IL) tests in radial drainage condition with remolded and undisturbed samples were performed. Comparisons of consolidation parameters from consolidation curves including coefficient of consolidation values show the applicability and the reliability of the suggested method. The experimental data were compared with additional vertical drainage CRS tests and IL tests, and then were analyzed considering the effect of the drainage direction. In addition, the effect of excess pore water pressure generated during CRS consolidation test was investigated.
In this study, a constant rate of strain test (CRS) and oedometer test was performed in order to study the consolidation characteristics to the liquid limit using a re-shaped clay which was preconsolidated at a constant pressure. Consolidation samples were made of kaolinite which was mixed with bentonite of 6 %, 9 %, 12 % and 15 % of it by weight and the test value of liquid limit of samples were appeared in 77 %, 84 %, 88 % and 91 % respectively. And then consolidation samples which were agitated sufficiently adding distilled water 2 times of liquid limit were preconsolidated in the condition of a constant pressure of 0.2 MPa. The oedometer test which is commonly used recently and the consolidation test of constant rate of strain which were applied in 0.001 %/min, 0.004 %/min, 0.01 %/min rate of strain according to ASTM, D4186-82 were performed and the preconsolidation pressures were compared and analyzed at 0.2 MPa preconsolidated pressure. As a result, in the case of low value of liquid limit, preconsolidation pressure was appeared same as 0.2 MPa preconsolidated pressure at the high speed strain rate, and in the case of high value of liquid limit, preconsolidation pressure was appeared same as 0.2 MPa preconsolidated pressure at the low speed strain rate.
In order to analyze effects of strain rate on consolidation characteristics of Busan clay, a series of constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation tests with different strain rate and incremental loading tests (ILT) were performed. From experimental test results on Busan clay, it was found that the preconsolidation pressure was dependent on the corresponding strain rate occurring during consolidation process. Also, consolidation curves normalized with respect to preconsolidation pressure gave a unique stress-strain curve. Coefficient of consolidation and permeability estimated from CRS test had a tendency to converge to a certain value at normally consolidated range regardless of strain rate. An increase in excess pore pressure was observed after the end of loading without change of total stress on the incremental loading test, which phenomenon is called Mandel-Cryer effect. It was also found that rapid generation of excess pore pressure took place due to collapse of soil structure as effective stress approached to preconsolidation pressure.

In this study, a consolidometer for radially inward drainage under constant rate of strain (CRS) loading was developed. Theoretical solutions for determining the effective vertical stress and the coefficient of consolidation from the test result were also proposed. Reconstituted kaolinite samples which were consolidated up to 130 kPa were used to verify the developed consolidometer and the theory. Comparative experiments with CRS loading and incremental loading (IL) were carried out in radially in ward drainage as well as vertical and radially outward drainage. The results obtained from the developed CRS loading test agreed consistently with those of the conventional incremental loading test according to drainage directions. And the effect of drainage direction and drain diameter to consolidation characteristics was also evaluated. From the test results the applicability and the reliability of the suggested method were verified.

In this study, a consolidometer for radially inward drainage under constant rate of strain (CRS) loading was developed. Their analytical solutions for evaluating consolidation characteristics of soils were also derived. With reconstituted kaolinite samples, comparative tests of the developed CRS loading consolidation in radially inward drainage together with incremental loading (IL) consolidation in radially inward, vertical and radially outward drainages and CRS loading consolidation in radially outward and vertical drainages were carried out. From the test results, It is confirmed that the results of the developed consolidometer were not only in good agreement with those of other consolidation tests but also they were more stable and reliable with less sample disturbance effect.
