In this study, design charts for estimating consolidation settlement are proposed according to finite strain consolidation theory using a nonlinear constitutive relationship equation. Results of parametric sensitivity analysis shows that the final settlement, initial height, and initial void ratio exerted the greatest effect, and the coefficients of the void ratio-effective-stress. Proposed design charts were analyzed for three regions using a representative constitutive relationship equation that enables major dredged-reclaimed construction sites in Korea. The regional design charts can be calculated accurately for the final settlement because it is applied directly to the numerical analysis results, except for reading errors. A general design chart applicable to all marine clays is proposed through correlation analysis of the main parameters. A final self-weight consolidation settlement with various initial void ratios and initial height conditions should be estimated easily using the general design chart and constitutive relationship. The estimated final settlement using the general design chart is similar to the results of numerical analysis obtained using finite strain consolidation theory. Under an overburden pressure condition, design charts for estimating consolidation settlement are proposed for three regions in Korea.
In this study, a series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests were performed with three different consolidation stress ratios ($K_c$=1.0, 1.5, 2.0) to investigate the undrained shear strength characteristics of sands with respect to the amount of contained silt located around the basin of Nak-dong River. The test results show that the more the sand has silt, the lower is cyclic shear stress ratio (CSR) in all $K_c$ and that the higher $K_c$ goes, the larger CSR decreases due to the increase of contained silt. The excessive pore pressure caused during shearing has an influence on the decrease of CSR by the high initial pore pressure in proportion to the amount of contained silt regardless of the $K_c$ value. After consolidation, the analysis of the skeleton void ratio of the sample reveals that the main cause of the decrease of CSR as well as the increase of the initial excessive pore pressure is the increase of the skeleton void ratio in proportion to the amount of contained silt.
For soils with high void ratios, the inverse method of utilizing results obtained from centrifuge model test was used to find the constitutive relation of effective stress - void ratio - permeability whereas conventional oedometer test and constant rate of strain consolidation test were also used to fine its relation at ranges of relatively low void ratio. Results of column test about settlement of interface and pore pressure and distribution with time were compared with numerically estimated values to confirm such a constitutive relation as obtained from the inverse method. Consolidational settlement in dredged and reclaimed ground, where the consolidation was in progress, was predicted by using the numerical technique implemented with the finite strain consolidation theory.
A series of model tests was conducted to investigate the one-dimensional consolidation behavior of an improved ground where sand compaction piles(SCP) were either fully or partly installed in the model clay ground. In order to check the one-dimensional consolidation settlement and stress concentration ratios, earth pressure, pore pressure transducers and dial gauges were installed in the model clay ground. The test results revealed that the consolidation settlement of the partly penetrated SCP ground was larger than that of the fully penetrated SCP ground, and the stress concentration ratios (m) of the fully penetrated SCP ground were higher than these of the partly penetrated SCP ground. The stress concentration ratio was decreasing with the increase in the penetration depth of SCP.
Aging effect of sands showed insignificant result in comparison with that of clay, so that it has not been studied so far. But, as penetration resistance increase has been observed with the lapse of time after deposition and disturbance, aging effect of sands has been actively investigated by field tests, and recently many researchers are performing not oかy field tests but also laboratory tests on sands, so aging effects of sands have been also examined by laboratory tests. In this study, to observe the aging effect of undrained static shear behavior for Nak-Dong River sand, undrained static triaxial tests were performed with changing relative density$(D_r)$, consolidation stress ratio$(K_c)$, and consolidation time. These tests showed that modulus within elastic section increased as consolidation time increased, and in addition, phase transformation point strength$(S_{PT})$ and critical stress ratio point strength $(S_{CSR})$ also increased. But pore water pressure ratio$(u/{p_c}')$ decreased as consolidation time increased, so with this various result, aging effect of static shear for sands can be observed as well.
Material functions about effective stress, permeability, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of volume change has important role to predict consolidation velocity and settlement of soft ground. Modified oedometer for radial drainage is adapted to find out material functions on laboratory tests. Undisturbed sample for laboratory tests were taken from construction sites of industrial complexes on southern coastal area which consists of upper dredged fill and lower original clay layer. For different drainage condition in consolidation process void ratio, effective stress, permeability, coefficient of consolidation and coefficient of volume change has been assessed with results of existing standard oedometer tests. It is worthwhile to note that consolidation material functions could be expressed as regression equation by Stark (2005), heterogeneity for permeability could be assessed from these relationships.

After clay particles have been sedimented isotropically, the clay deposits have been consolidated under $K_0$-stress system. Therefore, in order to predict the behavior in-situ of normally consolidated clays, the effect of $K_0$-consolidation should be considered. A series of undrained and drained triaxial compression tests was performed on remolded specimens of clay consolidated under both $K_0$-and isotropic stress systems and the effect of $K_0$-consolidation was investigated. $K_0$-consolidation has much effect on the deviator stress, especially at initial deformation stage of consolidated-undrained tests, but has little effect on the principal effective stress ratio. Thus, the undrained strength behavior of $K_0$-consolidated samples can not be predicted from isotropically consolidated test data. However, the failure envelop, provided by the maximum principal effective stress ratio failure criterion, is unique and curved.

The stress concentration ratio in accordance with area replacement ratios were considered as core elements of design. However, the stress concentration ratio will be vary depends on progress of consolidation in clay ground. And, since it is not sure to know the affecting factors accurately, the value is decided based on field experiences. To use SCP method more effective and correspond to soil improvement, the decision on proper area replacement ratio through the exact stress concentration ratio is very important. Accordingly, a numerical analysis on influence of various factors that needed to make rational designing guide for decision of proper area replacement ratio to stress concentration ratio was executed in this study.

For a massive project related to building national industrial complexes on a soft ground applied to PVD after dredging and hydraulic fill, laboratory tests were carried out using undisturbed sample taken from various depth. Piezocone penetration and dissipation tests were carried out to assess horizontal coefficient of consolidation and initial stress in field. The ground consists of upper dredged fill and lower original clay layer having both similar marine clays. It should be, however, considered as multi-layered soft ground having different initial void ratio, initial water content, initial effective stress, and permeability and compressibility with directions. To assess initial stress of those soft layers in which have different stress history related to consolidation, CPTu test results, especially excess pore water pressure, were analyzed. It allows to find out distribution of excess pore water pressure and initial stress inner original clay layer.
Anisotropy of stiffness, from extremely small strains to post-failure strains, of isotropically consolidated air-pluviated sands in plane strain compression was studied by using the newly developed instrumentation fur small strain measurements, Seven types of sand of world-wide origins were tested, which have been extensively used for research purposes. Stress-strain relationships for a wide range of strain from about 0.0001% to the peak were obtained by measuring axial and lateral strains locally free from the effects of bedding and membrane penetration errors at the specimen boundaries. The result showed that the relationship between the principal stress ratio and the principal strain increment ratio was constant, being rarely affected by the over-consolidation ratio and the confining pressure. Although in the small strain the anisotropy hardly affected the relationship between the principal stress ratio and the principal strain increment ratio, the K value around the peak varied according to the $\delta$ value. In general, Rowe\`s stress-dilatancy equation works fairly well from the small strain to the peak.
