  • Physical properties of mudbelt sediments in the southeastern inner shelf of Korea are studied from 14 cores. Physical properties, compressional wave velocity, and sediment texture for core sediments are analyzed. The major source of sediment in the study area is the Nakdong River. Fine-grained sediments from the river are transported northeastward by coastal circulation and the Tsushima Current, resulting in a gradual northeastward increase in porosity and a decrease in wet bulk density and velocity. The trend matches well with the bathymetry. The mean grain size appears to be the most important variable to determine the physical properties and velocity. The variations of physical properties with burial depth are dependent more strongly on sediment texture than compaction and/or consolidation. Correlations between the physical properties and the sediment texture show slight deviations from those of the continental terrace sediment in the North Pacific and inner shelf sediment in the South Sea of Korea. The velocity is higher than that of the North Pacific and the South Sea sediments between these areas. This is probably due to differences in sedimentary, environment and mineral compositions. The higher sediment velocity in the study area may also be attributed to the escape of gas from pore space which decreases void ratio.

  • The effects of the dopant (Mn) ratio on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of $FeSi_2$ alloy were studied in this research. The alloy was fabricated by a combination process of ball milling and high pressure pressing. Structural behavior of the sintered bulks were systematically investigated by XRD, SEM, and optical microscopy. With increasing dopan (Mn) ratio, the density and ${\varepsilon}-FeSi$ phase of the sintered bulks increased and maximum density of 94% was obtained in the 0.07% Mn-doped alloy. The sintered bulks showed fine microstructure of ${\alpha}-Fe_{2}Si_{5}$, ${\varepsilon}-FeSi$ and ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ phase. The semiconducting phase of ${\beta}-FeSi_2$ was transformed from ${\alpha}-Fe_{2}Si_{5}+{\varepsilon}-FeSi$ phase by annealing.

  • Recently, the most promising methods for high purity hydrogen production are membranes separation such as polymer, metal, ceramic and composites. It is well known that Pd and Pd-alloys membranes have excellent properties for hydrogen separation. However, it has hydrogen embrittlement and high cost for practical applications. Therefore, most scientists have studied new materials instead of Pd and Pd-alloys. On the other hand, TiN powders are great in resistance to acids and chemically stable under high operating temperature. In order to get specimens for hydrogen permeation, the TiN powders synthesized were consolidated together with Co, Ni powders by hot press sintering (HPS). During the consolidation of powders at HPS, heating rate was 10 K/min and the pressure was 10 MPa. It was characterized by XRD, SEM. Also, we estimated the hydrogen permeability by Sievert's type hydrogen permeation membrane equipment.

  • Recently, because of environment, cost, supply and demand factors, though applying sea-sand as horizontal drains is getting difficult that usage of Gravel has been growing in large size of construction sites, Study on engineering properties and behavior characteristics of Gravel stratum is not thoroughgoing enough. We have applied Gravel Mat as the horizontal drains in O O construction site. We also conducted several field tests such as Material property test, Geosynthetics damage test with Repeated load, Discharge capacity test performed by inflow of upper soil and In-situ PBD Penetration test to review the application of Gravel Mat. Test results show that Gravel Mat is not only advantageous in Trafficability and Water drainage by Consolidation due to its great Internal friction angle and Permeability, but also easy to penetrate with Mandrel and has great discharge capacity and guarantee of the stability against geosynthetics damage at the same time. With these benefits Gravel Mat shows great application in fields.

  • A sintering aid, $B_{2}O_{3}$ have been included into a $LiAlO_{2}$ electrolyte support by a tape casting method in order to reinforce mechanical strength of the support for molten carbonate fuel cells [MCFCs). Starting idea originates from the low melting point of $B_{2}O_{3}$ ($450^{\circ}C$), which can provide the low temperature consolidation of ceramic materials. The mechanical properties and the microstructure changes of the $B_{2}O_{3}$-included electrolyte support were examined by scanning electron microscope, mercury porosimetry, X-ray powder diffraction [XRD], high temperature differential scanning calorimeter and three-point bending strength measurement. The mechanical strength was clearly improved by addition of $B_{2}O_{3}$. The increase of mechanical strength results from the neck growth of a new $LiAlO_{2}$ phase between $LiAlO_{2}$ particles by the liquid phase sintering. Average pore size and porosity of the electrolyte support reinforced by addition of the sintering aid, $B_{2}O_{3}$, was $0.24{\mu}m$ and 59%, respectively which were suitable microstructure of a matrix for an application of MCFCs.

  • Powder forging with a back pressure was investigated for production of automobile and compressor parts made of a rapidly solidified Al-Si alloy powder. Disk-shaped green compacts made of a rapidly solidified Al-Si alloy powder were hot forged, and hubs were formed by loading back pressure on their top. The influences of the back pressure and die temperatures on forgeabiliy and properties of parts made of a rapidly solidified Al-Si alloy powder were examined. This method was also applied to the production of a scroll part. The results of these studies are summarized as follows : 1. A back pressure on the hub top is very effective for consolidation and preventing crack formation in the hub. 2. When a back pressure tess than 98 MPa is applied, the forging pressure increases by the same amount of the applied back pressure. With more than 98 MPa, the forging pressure increases further due to an increased friction at the hub side. 3. Die temperatures higher than approximately 670k are needed in order to consolidate well the hub top without cracks.

  • The aeromechanics predictions of HART I rotor obtained using a computational structural dynamics (CSD) code are evaluated against the wind tunnel test data. The flight regimes include low speed descending flight at an advance ratio of ${\mu}=0.151$ and cruise condition at ${\mu}=0.229$. A lifting-line based unsteady airfoil theory with C81 table look-up is used to calculate the aerodynamic loads acting on the blade. Either rolled-up free wake or multiple-trailer wake with consolidation (MTC) model is employed for the free vortex wake representation. The measured blade properties accomplished recently are used to analyze the rotor for the up-to-date computations. The comparison results on airloads and structural loads of the rotor show good agreements for descent flight and fair for cruise flight condition. It is observed that MTC model generally improves the correlation against the measured data. The structural loads predictions for all measurement locations of HART I rotor are investigated. The dominant harmonic response of the structural loads is clearly captured with MTC model.

  • Successful design, construction and maintenance of geotechnical structure in soft ground and marine clay demands prediction, control, stability estimation and monitoring of settlement with high accuracy. It is important to predict and to estimate the compression index of soil for predicting of ground settlement. Lab. and field tests have been and are indispensable tools to achieve this goal. In this paper, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) model with Levenberg-Marquardt Algorithm and field database were used to predict compression index of soil in Korea. Based on soil property database obtained from more than 1800 consolidation tests from soils samples, the ANNs model were proposed in this study to estimate the compression index, using multiple soil properties. The compression index from the proposed ANN models including multiple soil parameters were then compared with those from the existing empirical equations.

  • When we consolidate the iron artifacts, only we used VM&P Naphtha as solvent of paraloid NAD10. After consolidating the iron artifacts using paraloid NAD10, artifacts were too glossy to exhibit and see. We choose the solvent YK-VMP as solvent of paraloid NAD10 for complementing this defect and examined characterizations of paraloid NAD10 films in each solvent. As a result of evaluation by several surface analysis such as optical microscope, measuring film thickness, adhesive strength, gloss of surface, contact angle, yellowing test and EIS, it is possible to use YK-VMP instead of VM&P Naphtha as solvent of paraloid NAD10, because YK-VMP lowered surface gloss and did not change the effect of consolidation.
