  • This study aims at the development of computer Program for the deformation analysis of soft clay layers, and using this computer program, study the constraint effect of deformation- heaving, lateral displacement-of the soft clay layers reinforced with sheet pile at the tip of banking or improvement of soft clay layer up to hard strata, under intact state (natural) and the state of vertical drain respectively. For this study, Biot's consolidation theories and modified Cam-clay theory for constitutive equation for FEMI were selected and coupled governing equation, and christian-Boehmer's technique was applied to solve the coupled relationship. The following results are obtained. 1. Sheet pile or improvement of soft clay layer to the hard strata work well against the settlement of neighboring ground. B. In view of restriction of heaving or lateral displacement, sheet pile is not supposed to be of use. 3. Sheet pile is of effect only when vertical drain is constructed for acceleration of consolidation and load increases gradually. B. The larger the rigidity of improvement of layer to hard strata is, the less settlement occurs.

  • In order to clarify the effect of consolidant, the artificial porous material with low intensity was manufactured using granite powder and Portland cement. We have prepared four kinds of alkoxysilane system consolidants, a acrylic resin and a epoxy resin and investigated about characteristics before and after consolidation. As a result of the research, Silres BS OH 100 was effective for density and surface hardness. SS-101 with hydrophobicity and Site SX-RO with hydrophilicity had the good durability over salts weathering. On the other hand, Syton HT-50 and Paraloid B72 were easily destructed by salt weathering because they were concentrated on surface area by the low penetration depth. Araldite 2020 was the most effective consolidant for improvement of physical properties.

  • The SCP(sand compaction pile) method which is a vertical reinforcing technique for soft ground using a sand compaction pile has received increasing popularity in Korea. Currently, there are different methods to evaluate the bearing capacity of the reinforced ground by the SCP method. However, a method that can consider the effect of the replacement ratio on the bearing capacity is not yet available. This study investigated the effect of the replacement ratio on the bearing capacity of the reinforced ground by the SCP method. The study involved laboratory experiments which were conducted on a centrifuge facility. Test conditions included various ranges of replacement ratios (20, 30, and 40%), centrifuged consolidation, and loading. From the results of the study, a method which can evaluate the bearing capacity of the reinforced ground was proposed and verified using the weighted average of the replacement ratio.

  • An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the smeared effect due to mandrel penetration into soft ground for a vertical drain installation. Laboratory tests were performed to investigate the formation of a smear zone, the variations of strength, and the consolidation characteristics in the disturbed zone using two types(CL at Yangsan site and OH at Pohang site) of soft clayey soils. The smear zone effect was evaluated focusing on mandrel shape, mandrel size, penetration speed, and ground condition. Based on laboratory test results, the diameter of the smear zone$(d_s)$ ranged from 3.08 and 3.92 times that of mandrel$(d_m)$. It was also found that the $(d_s/d_m)$ value of the circular shape of the mandrel is smaller than those of square and rectangular shapes. The value of $(d_s/d_m)$ decreased with larger mandrel size, lower penetration speed in the CL soil, and higher penetration speed in the OH soil. However, natural water content was minimally affected by $(d_s/d_m)$. Respectively, the coefficients of horizontal consolidation$(C_{hs})$ and horizontal Permeability$(K_s)$ of smear zone ranged from 0.81 to 0.87 times, and 0.73 to 0.83 times those of the undisturbed zone. Based on this study, the values of $C_{hs}, K_s$ and unconfined compressive strength$(q_{us})$ in the smear zone were the lowest at close vicinity of the mandrel and increased linearly with distance from the mandrel. Further, the $(q_{us})$ varied from 0.5 to 0.9 times that of the undisturbed zone strength.

  • In this study, a series of column test as a way in order to make up for the weakness point of the conventional acceleration method were conducted to both propose the suction board drain method and grapes the specific improvement character of this method as a result of a sort of plastic drain board and a phase of vacuum pressure conditions. On this occasion, the study focused on computing the effective factors of the fittest Suction board drain method affected by each condition through confirming the settlement generated during the test, the water content reduction and stress increase effect occurred arising from the test, and the ratio of consolidation related to the improvement period. In accordance with the shape of core and that whether the core is attached to the filter(pocket or adhesion), the castle type of adhesion and the column type of pocket are more efficient than the others as a consequence of the test to find out the improvement effect depending on each drainage such as a castle type, coil type, harmonica type, column type of pocket and a castle of the adhesion. In case of the step suction pressure, the shorter the period of $-0.8\;kg/cm^2$ as a final step of the suction pressure is, the better the improvement is. In addition, the correlation between degree of consolidation per each suction pressure level and duration of application was drawn as a curve and the point of inflection on this curve was provided to determine the duration period to maximize the consolidation.

  • Microstructure and hardness of metallic powder of Cu was studied after high pressure torsion (HPT) with 10 torsions and high pressure of 6 GPa. The size Cu grain decreases drastically after HPT and reaches the nano size range. During HPT, Cu powder increases hardness and Hall-Petch hardening, due to the decreasing grain size. In this study, effect of HPT on the hardness of Cu powders and consolidation with Nanocrystalline of the work reported here. The results indicated that Cu powder has a beneficial effect on homogeneous deformation, reducing grain size.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of time-dependent creep on the deformation. In the analysis, modified Cam-Clay model was adopted to describe the elastic-plastic behavior of clayey soil. In order to consider effect of creep, the secondary coefficient of consolidation $\alpha$ was supplemented to modified Cam-Clay model. To examine the reliability of the program which is developed in this study, the estimated values by this program were compared with the experimental results. The results of the analysis were in good agreement with the observed values in the field.

  • Paper has fibers and fines network structure and it is strongly affected by interface bonding between fibers. Depending on the inter-fiber bonding, paper bulk is determined. Fines play an important roll in Campbell and consolidation effect through wet pressing and drying operations. Refined Sw-BKP, Hw-BKP and BCTMP fines were used to investigate the fines effect. Wet-web strength, breaking length, scattering coefficient, and hydrodynamic specific volume were measured. According to the result of experiments, chemical and morphological compositions of fines do not strongly affect to wet-web forming, but strongly affect to drying operations which form hydrogen bonding among fiber-fines-fiber matrixes. Paper bulk should be controlled by the extent of hydrogen bonding between fibers during drying operations.

  • The present study is concerned with the effect of PM process variables on the microstructure by using atomized superalloy powders. It is suggested that the inhomogeneity of composition is strongly dependent on the process variables. The contents of segregation elements of plasma rotating electrode process (PREP) powders are larger than those of Ar atomization (AA) powders. As HIP treatment temperature in-increases, the secondary phases on the prior particle boundaries (PPB) have continuous, uniform distribution and high density, but the amount of PPB decreases suddenly at 1150$^{\circ}$C. Segregated phases on the PPB are identified to be MC type carbide. Brittle MC type carbides on the PPB provide fracture initiation sites and preferred fracture path, thereby leading to intergranular type brittle fracture.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the effect of suction on compressibility and shear behaviour of unsaturated silty soil under various types of loading. A series of laboratory experiments were conducted in a double-walled triaxial cell on samples of a compacted silty soil. In the experiments the soil samples were subjected to isotropic consolidation followed by unloading and subsequent reloading under constant suction and prescribed overconsolidated ratio. The experimental results are presented in the context of an elasto-plastic model for unsaturated soil. The effects of suction on mechanical behaviour of unsaturated silty soil are presented and discussed. It is shown that increasing suction affects the shear behaviour of unsaturated soils, but there is a limit beyond which, further increase in suction will not result in any significant change in the behaviour.
