Recently, the more potential waste sites are being required as increasing the demand of better human life. But the construction of waste disposals has many restrictions because of lack of good quality clay and high cost of liners. So, in this study, we studied the liner materials to develop more cheaper soil liner that can be satisfied the environmental criterion for the coefficient of permeability and shear strength. A series of compaction test and triaxial (consolidation, permeability, and shear) tests were performed to obtain the optimized weight ratio of Bentonite-Soil mixture (B/S) including the least amount of bentonite. A series of soil tests were performed to acquire the appropriate weathered granite soil-bentonite mixture that is satisfied the environmental criterion of soil liner($k=1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$). At first, weathered granite soils were classified with four different particle-size soils, and B/S ratio was increased as 5% step for each particle-size. The test results showed that in case of weathered granite soil passing through No. 100 sieve, B/S=15% satisfied the soil liner criterion. The measured coefficient of permeability and the Chapuis's two equations were also compared. And a predicting equation for the coefficient of permeability was suggested, which is suitable for the mixture soil with the B/S ratio used in this study. The optimal weight ratio for the mixture soils used in this study was 15% in the both cases of permeability and shear strength.

In residual soils, large particles such as rock fragments or gravel are surrounded by sand or clay. The strength of such granular mixtures can be controlled by the concentration of fine or coarse grains. The percentage by weight, size or shape of gravel in the mixture that can control the strength of the mixture has not been clearly determined for various granular mixtures. In this study, the effect of dispersed gravels on the shear characteristics of sand was evaluated. Large and small gravels were inserted in the middle of each layer with moist Nakdong River sand and compacted into a cylindrical sample with five equal layers. Embedded gravel ratios by weight were 0, 3, 9, and 14%. After consolidation, a series of undrained triaxial compression tests was performed on Nakdong River sand with dispersed gravels. Maximum deviator stresses of the Nakdong River sand with large gravels decrease up to 38% as a percentage of embedded gravels increases. Such strength degradation decreases as a confining pressure increases. The maximum deviator stress increases as the percentage by weight of small gravel increases; at 3 or 9% of gravel weight it slightly increases but at 14% of gravel weight it increases up to 34%.

In order to accurately determine soil characteristics, it is necessary to collect undisturbed samples, and it is important to collect these samples with minimal disturbance. In this study, a sampler that minimizes sample disturbance was developed by attaching a catcher to the tip, and its applicability was reviewed through in situ sampling, X-ray CT, and laboratory tests. Results confirmed that horizontal cracks are likely to occur when using the Shelby tube sampler, whereas these cracks can be suppressed when using the newly developed sampler. Moreover, consolidation and shear test results showed that the samples collected using the newly developed sampler showed higher maximum shear strength compared to those collected using the Shelby tube sampler.
In order to improve dredged area, long time and high cost is needed because of bad engineering and physical conditions. And there is no suitable example of pipe mixing method at domestic site. Moreover, applicability and effectiveness of this method is uncertain and shows different results between site and laboratory test. In order to solve these problems, we determined proper grain size distribution and water content range using dredged soil and reformed material (standard sand & material controlling grain size distribution) in the laboratory test. As a result, we confirmed that coefficient of sediment consolidation is increased and there is an improvement about separation sedimentation. Undrained shear strength was derived by water content of reformed dredging soil through regression analysis of test results. We suggest the correlation equation for determining mixing ratio.
This paper investigates the effectiveness of quick lime piles for soft ground improvement. The field tests based on the results of the laboratory test were performed, and the results of field tests were compared with those of numerical analyses(FEM). The results of the field test showed that the domestic quick lime was very effective in reducing the water contents of the surrounding ground quickly due to its characteristics such as digestion, absorption, and exothermic reactions. Accordingly, consolidation occurred without any additional load increment and the shear strength of surrounding ground was increased more than twice. Therefore the quick lime pile method could be considered as an excellent improvement technique reducing the improvement period for soft ground. For the practical applications of the quick lime pile method, issues such as hydration heat, particulation and equipment enhancement should be solved through continuous research and development.
The production of industrial wastes have increased due to the growth of population and industrial development. Among these wastes, especially amount of paper ash has been increased year after year. If it is possible to reuse industrial wastes, it will be beneficial not only economically but also environmentally. In this study, the possibility of the utilization of paper ash were investigated as a construction materials through a series of laboratory testing carried out to evaluate physical properties, compaction, consolidation, permeability and compressive strength characteristics. Concrete bricks with replacement ratio of paper ash at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20%, and clayey bricks with replacement ratio of paper ash at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30% were used in the test in order to evaluate its quality. As a result of tests, it were shown that the maximum replacement ratio of paper ash satisfying the quality standards of concrete bricks and clayey bricks were 11.5% and 12%, respectively.
In order to investigate mechanics of mixtures composed of sand and non-plastic silt, various specimens, with sand dominating the soil structure, and with varying fines content, fines content varying were produced. Isotropic consolidation tests were performed using high pressure triaxial test apparatus within high pressure levels where sand grain crushing happened. Experimental results showed that compressive curve of sand after yielding contracts to the NCL due to breakage of sand grains. Moreover, with the increase of fines content, coarse grains are surrounded by fines to form cushion effect, which made the breakage of coarse grains become difficult. Therefore, the maximum inclination of compressive curve became flatter and yield stress increased.

A large number of small particles may surround large gravels which are non-contact and dispersed within the ground. The strength of such soil may be influenced by the mechanical properties of a few coarse gravels. A specimen or gravel size can impact the shear characteristics of sand with dispersed gravels. In this study, the size of gravel and specimen varies and its effect on shear characteristics of a granular soil was evaluated. Five sizes of gravels with 7, 12, 15, 18, and 22 mm were used repeatedly and inserted in the middle of each compacted layer. A specimen consists of five or ten equal layers depending on gravel size, which is 5 cm or 10 cm in diameter and 10 cm or 20 cm in height. An embedded gravel ratio by weight is 3% and constant for all cases with gravel. After consolidation, a series of undrained triaxial compression tests under three confining pressures was performed on sand with dispersed gravels. The maximum deviator stress of a specimen with 10 cm in diameter was at average 30% higher than that with 5 cm in diameter and increased up to 90% for a specimen with gravel. When a gravel size of 7 and 12 mm used, the maximum deviator stress of a specimen with 10 cm in diameter was higher than that of one without gravel, whereas the maximum deviator stress of a specimen with 5 cm was higher or lower than that without gravel. The gravel size and specimen diameter influenced the undrained behavior of sand. The maximum deviator stress of a specimen with gravel either increased or decreased compared to that without gravel, depending on the ratio of gravel size to specimen diameter, 1/5.
The Al-Cr-Zr composite metal powders were prepared by mechanical alloying and consolidated by vacuum hot pressing. The microstructural characteristics and the thermal stability of the MA Al-Cr-Zr alloys were evaluated by means of microhardness measurement, XRD and TEM in order to develop high temperature, high strength aluminum alloys. The mechanical alloying was conducted in attritor with 300rpm for 20 hours. The density of the vacuum hot pressed Al-Cr-Zr alloy reached at 97% of theoretical one. After exposing at $300^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours, there is almost no variation in hardness change of the MA alloys. Even after exposing at $ 500^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours, the hardness of the alloy was decreased within 6% of the initial value. The fine stable $Al_3Zr\;and\; Al_{13}Cr_2$ intermetallics were formed at the stage of consolidation and heat treatment in aluminum matrix. The good thermal stability of the MA Al-Cr-Zr alloy can ab attributed to the role of the dispersoids, inhibiting grain growth of nanocrystalline, and the final grain size after heat treatment was less than 150nm.

It has been reported that the failure of Carsington Dam in Eng1and occured due to the existence of a thin yellow clay layer which was not identified during the design work, and due to pre-existing shears of the clay layer. The slope stability analyses during the design work, which utilized traditional circular arc type failure method and neglected the existence of the clay layer, showed a safety factor of 1.4. However, the post-failure analyses which utilized translational failure mode considering the clay layer and the pre-existing shear deformation revealed the reduction of safety factor to unity. The post-failure analysis assumed 10。 inclination of the horizontal forces onto each slice based on the results of finite element analyses. In this paper, Bishop's simplified method, Janbu method, and Morgenstern-Price method were used for the comparison of both circular and translational failure analysis methods. The effects of the pre-existing shears and subsquent movement were also considered by varying the soil strength parameters and the pore pressure ratio according to the given soi1 parameters. The results showed factor of safefy 1.387 by Bishop's simplified method(STABL) which assumed circular arc failure surface and disregarding yellow clay layer and pre-failure material properties. Also the results showed factor of safety 1.093 by Janbu method(STABL) and 0.969 by Morgenstern-Price method(MALE) which assumed wedge failure surface and considerd yellow clay layer using post failure material properties. In addition, dam behavior was simulated by Cam-Clay model FEM program. The effects of pore pressure changes with loading and consolidation, and strength reduction near or at failure were also considered based on properly assumed stress-strain relationship and pore pressure characteristics. The results showed that the failure was initiated at the yellow clay layer and propagated through other zones by showing that stress and displacement were concentrated at the yel1ow clay layer.
