This thesis is to investigate the one-dimensional consolidation behavior of soft marine clay with uniform surcharges by perfoming numerical and experimental works. Parametric experimental works of centrifuge model test were carried out changing test conditions of gravitational level in centrifuge, magnitude of surcharges and construction sequence of applying surcharges. Results of centrifuge model experiments were analyzed by using the numerical technique of explicit finite difference method based on the finite strain consolidation theory, being known to be appropriate to analyze the consolidational behavior of soft clay with a very high initial void ratio using the Lagrangian and the material coordinate systems. Test results were in relatively good agreements with analyzed results in terms of excess pore pressure dissipation and consolidation settlement with time and final void ratio distribution.

This paper reviews depositional environments, consolidation characteristic of marine deposits along the Nam-Yang river mouth and then analytical solution of self-weight consolidation is made to find consolidated state. This area has been deposited through the short geological age(22year). It's deposition rate is as high as 70cm/year and the height of deposition may be $3{\sim}12m$. It's known that this area is in the under-consolidated state from OCR and analytical solution. It is conclude that the under-consolidated state should be considered in prediction of consolidation settlement.

The horizontal drain method is one of the soil improvement methods in reclamation works using dredged soils. In this method, plastic drain boards are installed horizontally in the ground, and a seepage pressure or negative pressure is applied through one end of these drains. In this study, a basic consolidation test using horizontal drains was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of this method. The configuration of soil box which was used in this test is 100cm(B)${\times}$100cm(L)${\times}$85cm(H). The drain board was reduced to 25mm${\times}$5mm. The variations in settlement and volume of drain water during the consolidation process were measured, and the distribution of water content and the transpormation of horizontal drain were investigated.

Based on the results obtain from the investigation of Nak-Dong River District, it was classified as very thick, soft soil deposit. Furthermore, during the construction of structures large settlements are expected. Since large settlement affects the structures life, it is very important to accurately determine the consolidation of soil based on the obtained results. In this study piezocone test and laboratory test were performed to determine the consoildtion properties of Nak-Dong River District Pusan, Gyeong-Nam province. Degree of consoildation and the coefficient of consoildation obtained from the data of piezocone test and the results of the Oedometer test were compared and analyzed. Using the results the porewater pressure coefficient($B_q$) was obtained and the relationship with the Plasticity Index was also determined. From the results of this study the effects of the degree of consolidation and consolidation coefficient, and the porewater pressure coefficient and the Plasticity Index was determined.
The shortage of bearing capacity and settlement, shear deformation may occur when constructing a structure such as harbor, airport and bridge on soft ground such as marine clay, silty clay, sandy soil because it is very soft. The various ground improvement methods were applied to obtain preceding settlement of soft ground and strength increase. The vertical drain method has been used to reduce the required time for consolidation of the soft ground. Especially, the PBD (Plastic Board Drain) has been widely used among in the vertical drain method. In this study, a behavior of characteristic was evaluated by operating a compound drainage capacity test about the PBD (Plastic Board Drain) method applied in soft clay in deep depth. As a result, the settlement gradually occurred with increase of surface load. The consolidation settlement was processed with dissipation of pore pressure after surface load of $500kN/m^2$. Accordingly, it was found that change of settlement through load steps was resulted from dissipation of pore pressure. It was also found that the drainage capacity of vertical drains was considerably reduced with pressure increase and time elapse.
Recently, the case to construct the structure on the soft clayey ground has increased and in order to the reduction of the cost of construction and maintenance on the social infrastructure facilities we have been trying to improve the soft clayey ground using the existing methods such as the pre-loading method and the vertical drain method. Like this, when various ground improvement methods are applied on the soft clayey ground, a long-term consolidation settlement will be key issue due to low permeability coefficient of cohesive soil. According to existing research results that relate to the consolidation settlement, the loading periods for existing the standard consolidation test (Oedometer test) to obtain the consolidation parameters are needed for minimum ten days or more. Therefore, in this study, the standard consolidation test (24 hours step-loading) and constant strain rate consolidation test changed by strain rate was performed using the remolded marine clay on Gwangyang bay composed of a soft clayey ground of the south-west coast. From the laboratory test results, the characteristics of compression, strain-effective stress relations by constant strain rate and the variation characteristic of the pore water pressure by different of loading speed and the relation between consolidation parameters and constant strain rate are compared and analyzed.
Efforts to understand and develop reasonable analysis methods for the uncertainty of ground have been made since the 20th century, and the concept of safety factor has been used. However, this concept has limitation in measuring the relative reliability of ground structures because the representative values of the actually used factors have uncertainty. Nevertheless, there is no method to completely remove uncertainty. In most cases, the ground investigation results in Korea are not enough for applying such statistical methods. Furthermore, performing a design without accurate investigation of consolidation state even though consolidation characteristics such as settlement and consolidation velocity vary greatly by the consolidation history can lead to many problems. Therefore, in this paper, as part of the effort to reduce the uncertainty of design around over consolidation ratio among the consolidation factors, the consolidation state was assessed on the basis of the results of high-quality laboratory tests that were performed in Gwangyang and Busan in the southern coast of Korea. Furthermore, consolidation characteristics such as over consolidation ratio by depth were proposed for different regions through statistical processes such as the test of normality and the removal of abnormal values to reduce the uncertainty of design parameters.

In general, the term soft ground includes clayey soils, which have large compressibility and small shear resistance due to the external load. All process of consolidation in compressible soils can be explained in terms of a transfer of load from an incompressible pore-water to a compressible soil structure. Therefore, one of the most important subjects about the characteristics of the time-dependent consolidation of the clay foundation by the change of load may be the presumption of the final settlement caused by consolidation and the degree of consolidation according to the time. The problems of discontinuous layer interface are very important in the algorithm and programming for the analysis of multi-layered soils using a numerical analysis, finite difference method. Better results can be obtained by the Process for discontinuous layer interface, since it can help consolidation analysis to model the actual ground. The purpose of this paper Provides an efficient computer algorithm based on numerical analysis using finite difference method(F.D.M.) which account for multi-layered soils to determine the degree of consolidation and excess pore pressures relative to time and positions more realistically.
Numerouslong-term consolidation and secondary compression settlements may occur in Busan clay, which is astructured soft clay and consists of a thick clay deposit. As a surcharge load is applied to soils, soils experience different stress paths with depth. Therefore, it is necessary to study the long-term consolidation behavior of Busan clay considering stress conditions such as OC or NC states. In this study, a series of long-term consolidation tests were performed to investigate the consolidation characteristics of Busan clay for 20 days. The undisturbed clay samples were taken from 3 sites located in the Nakdong River estuary. The results showed that the creep rate of the Busan clay gradually decreased with time, which indicated that the secondary compression settlement decreased with time. In addition, the experimental results for 3 samples showed that the ratios were about 0.0363 and 0.051, respectively.
This study was intended to investigate the consolidation characteristics of lowly organic soils and highly organic ones, with organic content 15 of and 68 % respectively. which were sampled from three different soil regions in Chonbuk province. The results were obtained partly from standard consolidation test but mostly from single increment consolidation test in which each sample was held under the first sustained load for weeks. Highly organic soils retained considerably larger void ratio than lowly organic ones. Decrease of void ratio due to load increment was gradual in lowly organic soils and abrupt in highly organic ones. The long-term compression quantity of the highly organic soils became linearly proportional to the logarithm of time after 5 minutes. The lowly organic soils showed a compression pattern similar to that of clay. For highly organic soils, the secondary consolidation coefficient appeared to have a constant relationship with the logarithm of consolidation time, and therefore may be used as a significant factor in estimating the long-term settlement.
