A series of numerical analyses on soft clay ground improved by plastic board drain(PBD) were carried out, in order to investigate the consolidation behavior considering viscosity of the improved ground. The applicability of numerical analyses, in which an elasto-viscoplastic three-dimensional consolidation finite element method is applied in this study, was confirmed through comparison between experimental and analytical results. As the analytical results, consolidation behavior of both settlement and excess pore pressure and effective stress in clay were elucidated. Then secondary consolidation characteristics of improved ground were estimated through compare with results of typical one-dimensional consolidation analysis.

It is of importance to determine the zero effective stress void ratio($e_{00}$), which is the void ratio at effective stress equal to zero, and the relationships of void ratio-effective stress and of void ratio-hydraulic conductivity for characterizing non-liner finite strain consolidation behavior for ultra-soft dredged materials. The zero effective stress void ratio means a transitional status from sedimentation to self-weight consolidation of very soft soil deposits, and acts as a starting point for self-weight consolidation in the non-linear finite strain numerical analysis such as PSDDF. In this paper, a new method for determining the zero effective stress void ratio has been introduced with the aid of measuring electrical resistivity of the specimen. A correlation between the zero effective stress void ratio and the initial slurry void ratio has been proposed, which can be used in PSDDF analysis as an input parameter. Combining all of the accessible experimental data, the consolidation characteristics of a dredged soil from the Incheon area has been studied in detail.

Observed field behaviors are frequently different from the behaviors predicted in the design state due to several uncertainties involved in soil properties, numerical modelling, and error of measuring system even though a sophisticated numerical analysis technique is applied to solve the consolidation behavior of drainage-installed soft deposits. In this study, genetic algorithms are applied to back-analyze the soil properties using the observed behavior of soft clay deposit composed of multi layers that shows complex consolidation characteristics. Utilizing the program, one might be able to appropriately predict the subsequent consolidation behavior from the measured data in an early stage of consolidation of multi layered soft deposits. Example analyses for drainage-installed multi-layered soft deposits are performed to examine the applicability of proposed back-analysis method.
In the companion paper, the nonlinear consolidation of soft clays subjected to cyclic loading was analytically investigated. This paper reports the results of an experimental program conducted to verify some critical assumptions made in the analytical study. It, also, includes a numerical study carried out to examine the capability of the proposed theory to determine the consolidation characteristics of soft clays subjected to cyclic loading. Results show that the permeability of the soft clays does not significantly change during the cyclic loading. It is also shown that, compared to the Terzaghi's solution for a linear clay, the inherit nonlinearity of the clay tends to decrease the degree of consolidation due to the smaller rate of dissipation in the excess pore water pressure.

The analysis about consolidation characteristic in soft clay has been depending one-dimension consolidation analysis. but, drain and undrain zone are explicated as homogeneous by consolidation behavior following consoli- dated settlementsoft in soft clay. 1) Established sand drain in soft clay in many types, and measured water content, unconfined compression strength, vertical stress, horizontal stress, vertical settlement, pore water pressure. 2) Arranged the result from the test and numerically explicated effective stress, total stress, and effective stress path at the drain and undrain zone. 3) We also analyzed and comparied elastic and elastic-plastic in soft clay using measured data. The result analyzed does not approach to a special theory, but, it is well in accord with the result of other investigator's study in the same condition.
The soft ground in the southwest coastal area composed of marine clay is greatly influenced by sediment composition, particle size distribution, particle shape, adsorption ions and pore water characteristics, tide and temperature. In addition, the geotechnical properties are very complex due to stress history, change in pore water, dissolution process and gas formation. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of the soft ground were evaluated through field tests and laboratory tests to investigate the strength increase characteristics according to consolidation on the soft ground in the southwest coast. In addition, in order to understand the consolidation behavior of soft ground such as subsidence, pore water pressure, horizontal displacement of soil by embankment load, measuring instruments such as pore water pressuremeter, settlement gauge, inclinometer and differential settlement gauge was installed, and a piezocon penetration test was carried out step by step to confirm the increase in shear strength of the ground. Through this, it was confirmed that the shear strength of the ground is increased according to the stages of filling. In addition, by evaluating the properties of consolidation behavior, strength increase and consolidation prediction by empirical methods and theories were compared to analyze the characteristics of strength increase rate and consolidation behavior in consideration of regional characteristics.
In this paper, the testing cell and the related theory far the interpretation of constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation test results in case of radial drainage were developed. The proposed method makes it possible to evaluate consolidation characteristics of clayey soil rapidly and accurately. To investigate the application of the developed testing device and theory, CRS consolidation tests and incremental loading(IL) tests in radial drainage condition with remolded and undisturbed samples were performed. Comparisons of consolidation parameters from consolidation curves including coefficient of consolidation values show the applicability and the reliability of the suggested method. The experimental data were compared with additional vertical drainage CRS tests and IL tests, and then were analyzed considering the effect of the drainage direction. In addition, the effect of excess pore water pressure generated during CRS consolidation test was investigated.

In general, the term soft ground includes clayey soils, which have large compressibility and small shear resistance due to the external load. All process of consolidation in compressible soils can be explained in terms of a transfer of load from an incompressible pore-water to a compressible soil structure. Therefore, one of the most important subjects about the characteristics of the time-dependent consolidation of the clay foundation by the change of load may be the presumption of the final settlement caused by consolidation and the degree of consolidation according to the time. The problems of discontinuous layer interface are very important in the algorithm and programming for the analysis of multi-layered soils using a numerical analysis, finite difference method. Better results can be obtained by the Process for discontinuous layer interface, since it can help consolidation analysis to model the actual ground. The purpose of this paper Provides an efficient computer algorithm based on numerical analysis using finite difference method(F.D.M.) which account for multi-layered soils to determine the degree of consolidation and excess pore pressures relative to time and positions more realistically.

The flat Dilatometer test(flat DMT) has been known as an in-situ testing method which is simple and robust to use, and reliable for site stratification and evaluation of soil properties. It was designed and proposed by Marchetti in 1975 to characterize the properties of soils. There are many researches that have been done to evaluate the horizontal coefficient of consolidation from the dissipation test results of flat DMT on normally consolidated and slightly overconsolidated clays. The representative estimation methods of estimating the horizontal consolidation coefficient are DMT-C method which uses a C-reading dissipation curve and DMT-A method which uses a A-reading dissipation curve. This paper represents a comparison analysis of those two methods in obtaining the horizontal coefficients of consolidation. The reference values are also obtained by CPTU and other laboratory tests. The applicability of using flat DMT to characterize the consolidation behavior is also reviewed for two sites. According to the results, DMT-A method is not suitable for silty clays possibly because of the compressibility characteristics. As for the normally consolidated and slightly overconsolidated clays, the results obtained from the two methods are comparable with each other as well as with the laboratory test results.
In this paper, a series of laboratory chamber tests was carried out to evaluate promoting consolidation of a porous concrete pile fabricated with recycled aggregates (RAPP) method for soft ground improvement. Performing the laboratory chamber tests for the RAPP, characteristics of the surface settlement with time and the consolidation time were compared with those of SCP and GCP provided by You (2009) under the same experimental condition. In addition, the experimental results were compared with the numerical analysis in this study. As a test result, the effects for settlement reduction in both the primary and the secondary consolidation and promoting consolidation by RAPP were prominent comparatively.
