  • Settlement analysis based on oedometer test results with or without Skempton-Bjerrum's modification method ( widely used for practical purposes when estimating consolidation settlements of soft clay deposits) has shortcomings that it cannot simulate real stress states and deformation behaviors of soils in case that in-situ loading and deformation conditions are not 1-dimensional. In this study, the stress path method, reflecting various probable stress paths, was employed to normally - consolidated kaolinite samples by using automated triaxial testing device which can control stress paths automatically. From this experimental study, elastic, consolidation, secondary compression and pore pressure development - dissipation behaviors under various stress paths were analyzed and deformation characteristics of soft clays, which can be the basis of rational estimation of settlements, were studied. Also by comparing results of stress path tests with those of 1-dimensional consolidation tests, limitations and problems of conventional methods were clarified.

  • The coastal area, particularly along the West and South coasts in Korea, is often reclaimed with dredged marine-clay to meet the demand of land capacity. A large number of ground improvement techniques are developed for such a newly formed soft clay deposit. However, the quick lime column method, which is effectively used for the purpose of ground improvement in the other countries, is seldom applied in Korea. This study, therefore, focuses on the development of appropriate soft soil improvement technique by using quick lime column. A model test as well as finite element analysis was conducted to identify the consolidation characteristics around the lime column. Although actual pore water pressure measured from model tests does not coincide with the predictions made by finite element method and Chen & Law's theoretical formula, their trends are quite similar. It is revealed from this study that the pressure caused by the expansion of lime column affects considerably the consolidation characteristics of the surrounding ground.

  • Suction stress is evaluated from soil water retention curves in order to deduce effective stress in unsaturated soils. $K_0$ consolidated triaxial tests were performed for silty sand to interpret effective stress in consolidation and shearing of unsaturated soils. Suction stresses from both consolidation stress and shear strength in triaxial tests were compared with those from soil water retention curves. The effective stresses on consolidation and shear strength are on each unique line, which are the same as that of the saturated case. It was found that the effective stress from soil water retention curves agrees with those from consolidation and shear strength in triaxial tests.

  • Jinhae's educational facilities had been located in the most integrated area at the beginning. As Jinhae's spatial layout has been in a rapid growth by constructing new towns and experiencing major consolidations over years, it was argued that this morphological transformation inevitably brought to the change of the characteristics of educational facilities' arrangement. In this reason, a number of studies have discussed the ways of how they have been settled down from the beginning of Jinhae. However, they did not take into an account of both the first consolidation happened in 1985 and the second one in 2013. This paper therefore aims to investigate how Jinhae's urban structure has been transformed between the two consolidations from a syntactical perspective, and then to interpret characteristics of educational facilities arrangement accordingly. This study finds out that when Jinhae experienced the first consolidation, educational facilities were occupied in highly segregated areas in terms of both global and local integration values. However, their locations turned out to be more intelligible after the second consolidation. This suggests that they have a significant effect on the process of urban growth at local level. Although the educational facilities particularly in Pungho and Ungchun are in highly integrated spaces at global level, they are still less intelligible.

  • Consolidation and permeability are major engineering properties of soil. In clay, coefficient of permeability and consolidation can be calculated by incremental loading consolidation test. However, it is known that the incremental loading test has several deficiencies including long testing time, non-uniform stress state, very soft clay and problem of back pressure saturation. Specially, it is not performed with horizontal consolidation test. Several methods have been proposed for obtaining reliable values of $C_v$. Among these, the square root of time-fitting method proposed by Taylor(1948) and logarithm of time-fitting method, also called Casagrande's method, are used extensively in soil engineering practice. But these methods are not amenable for the absence of initial linear portion and have the difficulties involved in distinguishing secondary compression from primary compression. Rowecell consolidation tests were carried out in this study with different trimming axis and sample size. The results were compared with those of other methods; Casagrande,$Taylor,\; Casagrande,\; Hyperbolic,\; \delta/t-logt$. From the results, we explained a relationship between horizontal coefficient of permeability and void ratio was obtained. Finally, the directly measured horizontal coefficient of permeability obtained by using the Rowecell was compared with the permeability derived indirectly from the consolidation test result.

  • Generally, natural soils are affected by one-dimensional consolidation so that the behavior characteristic could be somewhat different from the isotropic consolidation specimen. But, due to experimental difficulties and the lack of equipment, the isotropic triaxial tests are mainly performed in most lab. tests. So it seems to be very effective if it is possible to predict pore water pressure and undrained shear strength in the $K_o$ state as the results of isotropic triaxial consolidation test. In this study, isotropic triaxial consolidation test and $K_o$ triaxial consolidation test were performed and we obtained parameters related to pore water pressure ratio using the Hyperbolic model. And then we predicted the behavior of pore water pressure that occurred in the $K_o$ state from the results obtained in the isotropic triaxial cosolidation test through the equation suggested by Lo(1969). It is possible to seize the validity of Lo(1969) equation. Also, considering undrained shear strength obtained from consolidation method in relation with water content, we find that consolidation method have an effect on undrained shear strength. Finally, using the Wroth(1984) equation that is based on the theory of critical state, undrained shear strength in the $K_o$ state was predicted from that of the isotropic triaxial consolidation test. The usefulness of the equation was verified by comparing the predicted value with experimental results.

  • The standard consolidation tests using the incremental loading technique test (IL) were performed on remolded normal consolidation and undisturbed clay samples to find out the effects of plastic index and loading period on consolidation in this study. The remolded samples used were prepared by mixing Gunsan-Samangum clay with bentonite so that they may have plasticity indexes of 15, 30, 45, and 60%, respectively. The undisturbed clay samples were collected from Inchon, Kwangyang, and Uoolsan. The samples were tested at the condition of 4 different loading periods (1, 2, 4, and 8 days). Settlement, coefficient of consolidation, compression index, secondary compression index, and pore water pressure characteristics were investigated from the plastic index and loading period aspects, and the compression index, coefficient of consolidation, and secondary compression index were formulated in terms of the plastic index and loading. To verify the applicability of proposed equations, the settlements obtained from Terzaghi's theory, modified Cam-Clay model (elasto-plastic model), and the Sekiguchi model (elasto-viscoplastic mode) were compared with the test results. The comparison indicates that the Sekiguchi model incorporating the secondary consolidation characteristic well predicts the results.

  • In order to provide the design criteria, the characteristics of consolidation for soft ground improvement have been investigated using the field banking test performed by the vertical drain method at the northern container section in Busan New Port. Field test results indicated that the estimated degree of consolidation in design stage decreased by about 7% compared with the measured one. This difference is attributed to the fact that the conservative geological properties were applied with relatively high amount of maximum clay mixture ratio during the design stage. Based on this findings, another laboratory oedometer test was implemented to consider various combination of mixture ratio. It was found that the consolidation degree increased in accordance with the increase of sand/silt mixture ratio. Also, the proportion of 10%, 50%, and 40% for sand, silt, and clay, respectively, was observed as the best combination of mixture ratio to the actual measurement, which is very similar to the average grain size distribution in the banking test area. Therefore, it is suggested that the overall geological characteristics as well as the grain size distribution should be considered in design stage to improve the soft ground that contains mixture of sand, silt, and clay.

  • Geotechnical evaluation on the reactive drain pile which can achieve simultaneously both the soft ground improvement and the remediation of contaminated pore water in reclamation site was performed. Applicability of steel-making slag used as a inside reactive material was confirmed. To investigate the consolidation characteristics of the soft ground improved by reactive drain pile, testing devices to form and install the reactive drain pile were developed and laboratory tests were performed according to the existence of outside sand drain and the length of impermeable barrier. Test results showed that the consolidation time was decreased as the shortening of impermeable barrier. However, the effect of outside sand drain on consolidation time was dominant compared with the length of impermeable barrier.

  • Sand pile is widely used as a ground improvement method. Although the primary purpose of constructing sand pile is accelerating consolidation, composite ground effect also can be gained by constructing sand pile. This study was accomplished to understand composite ground effect on the ground improved by sand piles which were applied as vertical drainage material when area replacement ratio was small relatively. For determining bearing capacities of origin ground and sand piles and analysing interaction between embankment and origin ground, bearing tests and earth pressure monitoring are performed. From the results, it turned out that the contribution of sand pile as a load bearing mechanism is not substantial. However, the bearing capacity of sand pile was increased to sixty percentages when compared with origin ground. The increasement of bearing capacity could be caused the change of consolidation characteristics during the process of consolidation by overburden load. Therefore, the composite ground effects depending on stiffness increasement of sand pile would be estimated as a factor decreasing consolidation settlement.
