  • Since seismic inversion is based on the wave equation, it is important to calculate the solution of wave equation exactly. In particular, full waveform inversion would produce reliable results only when the forward modeling is accurately performed because it uses full waveform. When we use finite-difference or finite-element method to solve the wave equation, the convergence of numerical scheme should be guaranteed. Although the general proof of convergence is provided theoretically, the consistency and stability of numerical schemes should be verified for practical applications. The implementation of source function is the most crucial factor for the consistency of modeling schemes. While we have to use the sinc function normalized by grid spacing to correctly describe the Dirac delta function in the finite-difference method, we can simply use the value of basis function, regardless of grid spacing, to implement the Dirac delta function in the finite-element method. If we use frequency-domain wave equation, we need to use a conservative criterion to determine both sampling interval and maximum frequency for the source wavelet generation. In addition, the source wavelet should be attenuated before applying it for modeling in order to make it obey damped wave equation in case of using complex angular frequency. With these conditions satisfied, we can develop reliable inversion algorithms.

  • In order to answer the questions successfully on behalf of the human in DeepQA environments such as Jeopardy! of the American quiz show, the computer is required to have the capability of fast temporal and spatial reasoning on a large-scale commonsense knowledge base. In this paper, we present a scalable spatial reasoning algorithm for deriving efficiently new directional and topological relations using the MapReduce framework, one of well-known parallel distributed computing environments. The proposed reasoning algorithm assumes as input a large-scale spatial knowledge base including CSD-9 directional relations and RCC-8 topological relations. To infer new directional and topological relations from the given spatial knowledge base, it performs the cross-consistency checks as well as the path-consistency checks on the knowledge base. To maximize the parallelism of reasoning computations according to the principle of the MapReduce framework, we design the algorithm to partition effectively the large knowledge base into smaller ones and distribute them over multiple computing nodes at the map phase. And then, at the reduce phase, the algorithm infers the new knowledge from distributed spatial knowledge bases. Through experiments performed on the sample knowledge base with the MapReduce-based implementation of our algorithm, we proved the high performance of our large-scale spatial reasoner.

  • Determining the best visibility positions on terrain surface has been one of the frequently used analytical issues in GIS visibility analysis and the search for a solution has been carried out effectively using spatial search techniques. However, the spatial search process provides operational and methodological challenges for finding computational algorithms suitable for solving the best visibility site problem. For this problem, current GIS visibility analysis has not been successful due to limited algorithmic structure and operational performance. To meet these challenges, this paper suggests four algorithms explored robust search techniques: an extensive iterative search technique; a conventional solution based on the Tornqvist algorithm; genetic algorithm; and simulated annealing technique. The solution performance of these algorithms is compared on a set of visibility location problems and the experiment results demonstrate the useful feasibility. Finally, this paper presents the potential applicability of the new spatial search techniques for GIS visibility analysis by which the new search algorithms are of particular useful for tackling extensive visibility optimization problems as the next GIS analysis tool.

  • In this paper, a temporal color and luminance variation suppression algorithm for a digital video sequence is proposed by considering time-varying light source. When a video sequence is sampled with the periodically emitting illuminant and with a short exposure time, the color rolling phenomenon occurs, where the color and the luminance of the image periodically change from field to field. In conventional signal processing techniques, the luminance variation remaining in the resultant video sequence degrades the constancy of the image sequence. In the proposed method, we obtain video sequences with constant luminance and color by compensating for the inter-field luminance variation. Based on a motion detection technique, the amount of the luminance variation for each channel is estimated on the background of the sequence without the effects of moving objects. The experimental results clearly show that our strategy efficiently estimated the illuminant change without being affected by moving objects, and the variations were efficiently reduced.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear Moving Least Squares(MLS) difference method for material nonlinearity problem. The MLS difference method, which employs strong formulation involving the fast derivative approximation, discretizes governing partial differential equation based on a node model. However, the conventional MLS difference method cannot explicitly handle constitutive equation since it solves solid mechanics problems by using the Navier's equation that unifies unknowns into one variable, displacement. In this study, a double derivative approximation is devised to treat the constitutive equation of inelastic material in the framework of strong formulation; in fact, it manipulates the first order derivative approximation two times. The equilibrium equation described by the divergence of stress tensor is directly discretized and is linearized by the Newton method; as a result, an iterative procedure is developed to find convergent solution. Stresses and internal variables are calculated and updated by the return mapping algorithm. Effectiveness and stability of the iterative procedure is improved by using algorithmic tangent modulus. The consistency of the double derivative approximation was shown by the reproducing property test. Also, accuracy and stability of the procedure were verified by analyzing inelastic beam under incremental tensile loading.

  • The most basic algorithm in SLAM(Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) technique of mobile robots is EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) SLAM. However, it requires prior information of characteristics of the system and the noise model which cannot be estimated in accurate. By this limit, Kalman Filter shows the following behaviors in a highly uncertain environment: becomes too sensitive to internal parameters, mathematical consistency is not kept, or yields a wrong estimation result. In contrast, $H_{\infty}$ filter does not requires a prior information in detail. Thus, based on a idea that $H_{\infty}$ filter based SLAM will be more robust than the EKF-SLAM, we propose a framework of $H_{\infty}$ filter based SLAM and show that suggested algorithm shows slightly better result man me EKF-SLAM in a highly uncertain environment.

  • A distributed constraint satisfaction problem (distributed CSP) is a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) in which variables and constraints are distributed among multiple automated agents. A CSP is a problem to find a consistent assignment of values to variables. Even though the definition of a CSP is very simple, a surprisingly wide variety of AI problems can be formalized as CSPs. Similarly, various application problems in DAI (Distributed AI) that are concerned with finding a consistent combination of agent actions can be formalized as distributed CPSs. The experimental results on example problems show that this algorithm is by far more efficient than the backtracking algorithm, in which the priority order is static. The priority order represents a hierarchy of agent authority, i.e., the priority of decision-marking. Therefore, these results imply that a flexible agent organization, in which the hierarchical order is changed dynamically, actually performs better than an organization in which the hierarchical order is static and rigid. Furthermore, we describe that the agent can be available to hold multiple variables in the searching scheme.

  • Recently the cloud computing paradigm has been widely accepting in various applications. Data management system of cloud computing requires ability to manage tremendous data and supporting scalability. The former can be achieved by weaken consistency and limitation of transactions, and the latter needs expand or shrink of components. In this paper, we propose a transaction processing model and a scalable module management algorithm when transaction is executed in the cloud. Transaction processing model consists of a transaction management module and a data management module. Scalable module management algorithm has no redistribution of components and may alleviates loads of existed modules. With simulation results, we can see the improvement of response time and decrease abort ratio of transactions.

  • The paper presents the novel approach to solve some problems occurred in application of the genetic algorithm to the determination of the optimal tire pattern sequence in order to reduce the tire air-pumping noise which is generated by the repeated compression and expansion of the air cavity between tire pattern and road surface. The genetic algorithm has been used to find the optimal tire pattern sequence having a low level of tire air-pumping noise using the image based air-pumping model. In the genetic algorithm used in the previous researches, there are some problems in the encoding structure and the selection of objective function. The paper proposed single encoding element with five integers, divergent objective function based on evolutionary process and the optimal evolutionary rate based on Shannon entropy to solve the problems. The results of the proposed genetic algorithm with evolutionary process are compared with those of the randomized algorithm without evolutionary process on the two-dimensional normal distribution. It is confirmed that the genetic algorithm is more effective to reduce the peak value of the predicted tire air-pumping noise and the consistency and cohesion of the obtained simulation results are also improved in terms of probability.

  • It is necessary to adopt a simple signal validation for avoiding the complexity of algorithm and verification in the design process of the instrumentation and control system in nuclear plants. This paper suggests a signal validation method developed on the basis of consistency checking for the multi-channel measurement system without any analytic process model. It includes a simplified algorithm for estimating the fixed bias error of each channel and a weighted averaging method. The weighting factor of each channel is updated according to its calculated bias error. The developed method has been tested to verify its performance through several input scenarios.
