  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of virtual reality (VR) therapy with compensation inhibition and feedback (CIF) on upper extremity function in chronic stroke patients. Seven chronic stroke patients participated in this study, which was a randomized controlled trial with a crossover design. Self upper extremity exercise, conservative VR therapy, and VR therapy with CIF were performed for one hour per session, 5 times per week, over a 3 week period. The main outcome measures involved range of motion (ROM) including shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints, a Manual Function Test (MFT), and a Motor Activity Log (MAL). Data were calculated as posttest and pretest changes in every session and were analyzed using Friedman and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests at p<.05. The results were as follows: 1) Statistically significant increase in ROM measurements of shoulder and elbow joints were seen with VR therapy with CIF compared to VR therapy and self upper extremity exercise (p<.05), whereas no significant increasing was noted for the wrist joint (p>.05). 2) Statistically significant increase in the MFT was seen with VR therapy with CIF compared with VR therapy and self upper extremity exercise (p<.05). 3) VR therapy with CIF also resulted in statistically significant increase in both activity of use (AOU) (p<.05) and quality of movement (QOM) (p<.05) on the MAL test when compared with VR therapy and self upper extremity exercise, respectively. In conclusion, VR therapy with CIF was more effective than conservative VR therapy and self upper extremity exercise in improving the upper extremity function in hemiplegic patients with chronic stroke.

  • The purpose of this case study is to show a case of acute posterior cruciate ligament(PCL) complete injury improved by conservative acupuncture therapy. The patient was treated for 100 days. The patient received deep interarticular electroacupuncture(EA) stimulation at S35, LE200, LE211 and treated by other acupoint stimulation, herb medication, cupping, physical treatments and exercise. We evaluated through MRI and Lysholm knee score. We suggest to treat acute posterior cruciate ligament(PCL) injury with acupuncture therapy meaning conservative therapy and would like to research acupuncture treatment plan for the further treatments.

  • This study was undertaken to find out the effect analysis of conservative treatment in of lumbar intervertebral disc. The data was performed to evaluate the effect of conservative treatment in 50 patients aging from 20 to 67 with lumbar intervertebral disc patients. Changes in low back pain score were evaluated by age, occupation, duration of symptoms, marital status, education period, self assessment. Duration of symptoms in over 7 months was 62.0%. 8.6 scores of complete recovery was changes in low back pain score of self assessment patients. In the multiple regression of risk factors to changes in low back pain score were correlated with age, education period, marital status, duration of symptoms(p<0.05). All patients were assessed by the low back pain protocol which was composed of symptom, clinical sign and activities of daily living scales before and after the treatment. Poor result could be predicted after the nonoperative treatment in the patient groups of changes low back pain score decreased with aging, duration of symptom over 7 months.

  • Therapeutic use of antibiotics in the pulpal disease should reduce the clinical symptoms and pathogenic microflora in the pulp. The purpose of this study was focused on local drug delivery into the root canal in endodontic therapy. Monolithic films from polycaprolactone and polyethylene glycol preparations with minocycline were prepared, and then the antimicrobial effect of these films on necrotic canal was tested. A total 17 necrotized pulp teeth were sampled before and 1 week after insertion of film into the pulp. Bacterial culture were performed with anaerobical condition and seeded in the 5 selective and non - selective media for 7 days in $37^{\circ}C$ of anaerobic chamber. Bacterial identification were performed with Gram staining, biochemical test, and API kit There was significantly decreased of anaerobic and aerobic microflora of 13 among 17 patients after therapy. Among the identified microflora, Streptococcus species, black - pigmented species and Fusobacterium species were significantly reduced 1 week after treatment with local delivery antibiotics. Furthermore, clinical symptoms included in pain and local swelling were continuousely reduced after therapy. These results suggest that local drug delivery with minocycline is effeicient to treat the endodontic involved teeth for releasing clinical symptoms and microbiological shifting.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of conservative surgery plus chemo-, radio-therapy in treating patients with early stage breast cancer. Patients and Methods: Eligible patients were treated by postoperative chemotherapy as well as whole-breast irradiation with tumor bed boost. Postoperative radiotherapy consisted of 6 MV whole breast linear accelerator irradiation with two tangential half fields to a total dose of 45~50 Gy, followed by $10{\sim}15MeV{\beta}$ boost irradiation to tumor bed for 10~20Gy, total dose 56~66Gy. Results: Fifty-two patients were enrolled. Overall 1-, 2- and 3 year survival rates were 98.1%, 92.3%, and 90.4%, respectively, with a local recurrence rate of 5.77%. Cosmetic results were evaluated as good by doctors in 90.4% of patients. Conclusions: Breast conservative surgery combined with chemo- radio-therapy could be a treatment option for Chinese patients with early stage breast cancer.

  • The purpose of this study is to know recent studies about conservative treatment of osteoarthritis in knee joint. We reviewed and analyzed 71 theses published by korean research institution since 2000. These theses were classified by year, field of study and subject. The results of this study are as follows. 1. We found 24 oriental medical theses about osteoarthritis in knee joint since 2000. 2. Classified by the major field of study, the journal of korea acupuncture and moxibustion society accounted for 17 pieces in oriental medical journals. 3. In oriental medicine, the most subject is acupuncture(19 pieces). 13 pieces in it is about pharmacopuncture. 4. 47 theses are published in medical journals after 2000. 5. 35 associations dealt with this theme, the korean society of physical medicine is major. 6. Most subject is kinesitherapy, followed by pharmacotherapy, massotherapy, taping therapy, physiotherapy and insole. We found several therapies were effective through oriental and western medical theses. Combined oriental medicine and western conservative therapy like kinesitherapy make better effect on osteroarthritis of knee joint.

Methods : We treated the patient, who had acute abdominal pain and were diagnosed as paralytic ileus, with acupuncture, herbal medicine and manipulation therapy. We observed changes of chief symptoms and abdominal states. Results : We treated the patient who had severe abdominal pain, constipation and anorexia caused by acute paralytic ileus. For about one month of the treatment, we had the improvement of the symptoms. Conclusions : This study suggests that Conservative korean medical treatment might be useful for abdominal pain caused by acute paralytic ileus, and make a patient feel psychological stability.
