This paper addresses an efficient modification method that eliminates the undesirable effects of strains due to various non-conforming modes so that the non-conforming element can pass the patch test unconditionally. The scheme is incorporated in the element formulation to establish new types of non-conforming hexahedral elements designated as NHx and NVHx for the regular element and variable node element, respectively. Non-conforming displacement modes are selectively added to the ordinary (conforming) element displacement assumptions to improve the bending behavior of the distorted solid element. To verify the validation of proposed direct modification method and the improvement of element behavior, several numerical tests are carried out. Test results show that the proposed method is effective and its applications to non-conforming solid elements guarantee for the element to pass the patch test.

A versatile flat shell element has been developed by combining a membrane element with drilling degree-of-freedom and a plate bending element. This element is formulated by the enhanced displacement field with the additional non-conforming displacement modes. Thus the element possesses six degrees-of-freedom (DOF) per node which permits an easy connection to other six DOF elements as well as the improvement of the element behavior. In plate bending part, this element is established by the combined use of the addition of non-conforming modes, the reduced (or selective) integration scheme, and the construction of the substitute shear strain fields. The achieved improvement may be attributable to the fact that the merits of these individual techniques are merged into the new element in a complementary manner. In membrane part, this element shows better membrane behavior as the nonconforming displacement mode is added to drilling mode.

In this paper, we present a quadratic element model based on non-conforming displacement modes and modified shape functions. This new and refined 8-node hybrid stress plane element consists of two additional non-conforming modes that are added to the translational degree of freedom to improve the behavior of a membrane component. Further, the modification of the shape functions through quadratic polynomials in x-y coordinates enables retaining reasonable accuracy even when the element becomes considerably distorted. To establish its accuracy and efficiency, the element is compared with existing elements and - over a wide range of mesh distortions - it is demonstrated to be exceptionally accurate in predicting displacements and stresses.
Finite element simulations of solid mechanics problems often involve the use of Non-Confirming Meshes (NCM) to increase accuracy in capturing nonlinear behavior, including damage and plasticity, in part of a solid domain without an undue increase in computational costs. In the presence of material nonlinearity and plasticity, higher-order variables are often needed to capture nonlinear behavior and material history on non-conforming interfaces. The most popular formulations for coupling non-conforming meshes are dual methods that involve the interpolation of a traction field on the interface. These methods are subject to the Ladyzhenskaya-Babuska-Brezzi (LBB) stability condition, and are therefore limited in their implementation with the higher-order elements needed to capture nonlinear material behavior. Alternatively, the enriched discontinuous Galerkin approach (EDGA) (Haikal and Hjelmstad 2010) is a primal method that provides higher order kinematic fields on the interface, and in which interface tractions are computed from local finite element estimates, therefore facilitating its implementation with nonlinear material models. The inclusion of higher-order interface variables, however, presents the issue of preserving material history at integration points when a increase in integration order is needed. In this study, the enriched discontinuous Galerkin approach (EDGA) is extended to the case of small-deformation plasticity. An interface-driven Gauss-Kronrod integration rule is proposed to enable adaptive enrichment on the interface while preserving history-dependent material data at existing integration points. The method is implemented using classical J2 plasticity theory as well as the pressure-dependent Drucker-Prager material model. We show that an efficient treatment of interface variables can improve algorithmic performance and provide a consistent approach for coupling non-conforming meshes in inelasticity.
A software implementation of floating-point addition and multiplication is presented. For this, the ANSI/IEEE standard for binary floating-point arithmetic is reviewed briefly. The architecture and behavior of the $Intel^{(R)}\;80{\times}87$ FPU is fully studied and basic algorithms for floating-point addition and multiplication are used for the implementation. Some examples and their verifications are also presented.
A versatile 4-node shell element which is useful for the analysis of arbitrary shell structures is presented. The element is developed by flat shell approach, i.e., by combining a membrane element with a Mindlin plate element. The proposed element has six degrees of freedom per node and permits an easy connection to other types of finite elements. In the plate bending part, an improved Mindlin plate has been established by the combined use of the addition of non-conforming displacement modes (N) and the substitute shear strain fields (S). In the membrane part, the nonconforming displacement modes are also added to the displacement fields to improve the behavior of membrane element with drilling degrees of freedom and the modified numerical integration (M) is used to overcome the membrane locking problem. Thus the element is designated as NMS-4F. The rigid link correction technique is adopted to consider the effect of out-of-plane warping. The shell element proposed herein passes the patch tests, does not show any spurious mechanism and does not produce shear and membrane locking phenomena. It is shown that the element produces reliable solutions even for the distorted meshes through the analysis of benchmark problems.
This paper presents an experimental study to investigate the behavior of mechanical anchorage of reinforcing bars in concrete members. Three kinds of mechanical anchorage which are a kind of headed reinforcements are considered in this study. Total seven specimens were prepared to consider the effects of anchoring methods (Type A, Type B and Type C) and anchorage lengths of the reinforcing bars (14 $d_{b}$, 12 $d_{b}$, 9 $d_{b}$). Pullout tests conforming to ASTM were carried out to assess the effects of several variables on anchoring strength of bars. Based on the test results, it was concluded that the behavior of the specimen anchored by the mechanical anchorage with the anchor-age length of 12 $d_{b}$, is as good as, or better than that of the specimen anchored by 90-degree standard hook.rd hook.
Purpose: This research examines how people react to nonconforming behavior such as entering a luxury boutique wearing gym clothes rather than an elegant outfit or wearing red sneakers in a professional setting. Nonconforming behaviors, as costly and visible signals, can act as a particular form of conspicuous consumption and lead to a positive inference of status and competence in the eyes of others. Research design, data, and methodology: A series of studies demonstrate that people confer higher status and competence rather than conforming individuals using 2-way ANOVA through employees in luxury stores and students at university. Results: According to the empirical studies, observers who witness the nonconformity behavior have positive inferences of status and competence rather than conformity behavior. These positive inferences derived from signals of nonconformity are moderated by individual differences in prior knowledge and regulatory focus. Conclusions: Through three empirical studies, observers who witnessed role-breaking in prestigious and professional situations found that the individuals who performed the nonconformity behavior had higher status and competence rather than conformity behavior. Even in Korea, a collectivist culture, observers who witnessed nonconformity behavior showed that they gave higher evaluations to the people who behaved informally.
The study is to investigate mothers' parental beliefs about child development and the children's developmental tasks, and to explore the relationship between mother's parental beliefs and child-rearing behaviors. The subjects are 113 pairs of 4- to 5-year-old children and their mothers. For measuring maternal beliefs about child-development, 'beliefs about development scale' and 'child-rearing beliefs scales' were used. For mother's child-rearing behaviors, 'child rearing behavior observation scale' was used. The main results were: first, mothers value the cognitive theory and 'autonomous behavior' higher than 'conforming behavior' in developing their children. Second, there were no differences in mother's parenting beliefs in the factors of 'gender of their children' and 'maternal job status', while there were significant differences in maternal beliefs according to the levels of mother's education and family income. Third, sub-scales of their parenting beliefs were correlated with interactive behaviors between them and their children. The more mothers put importance on cognitive theory and children's autonomous behaviors, the more their supportive child-rearing behaviors during child-mother task solving situations were showed.
A dynamic load protocol has been used to experimentally simulate fatigue behavior in cold-formed metal panels with screwed connections under wind loading. The specific protocol adopted is an adaptation of SIDGERS, originally developed for non-metallic membranes, which is composed of levels each under increasing load values. A total of 19 tests were performed on 3.35 m long by 0.91 m wide panels, identified as Type B-wide rib and Type E, both with screw connections at the edge and at the center, thus conforming two-span specimens. In some configurations the panels were fixed at the valleys, whereas crest-fixed connections were also investigated. Reinforcing the connections by means of washers was also investigated to evaluate their efficiency in improving fatigue capacity. The experimental results show maximum load capacities in improved connections with washers of approximately twice of those with classical connections.
