  • It is essential to embed product quality in the design process to win the global competition. Many components found in many products including automobiles and electronic devices are fabricated using sheet metal forming processes. Wrinkle and fracture are two types of defects frequently found in the sheet metal forming process. Reducing such defects is a hard problem as they are affected by many uncontrollable factors. Attempts to solve the problem based on traditional deterministic optimization theories are often led to failures. Furthermore, the wrinkle and fracture are conflicting defects in such a way that reducing one defect leads to increasing the other. Hence, it is a difficult task to reduce both of them at the same time. In this research, a new design method for reducing the rates of conflicting defects under uncontrollable factors is presented by using operating window and a sequential search procedure. A new SN ratio is proposed to overcome the problems of a traditional SN ratio used in the operating window technique. The method is applied to optimizing the robust design of a sheet metal forming process. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, a comparison is made between the traditional and the proposed methods using simulation software, applied to a design of particular sheet metal forming process problem. The results show that the proposed method always gives a more robust design that is less sensitive to noises than the traditional method.

  • In the area of construction defects, residents have a tendency to focus on visually identifiable defects, while construction companies focus on defects that affect the structural and functional integrity of apartment housing. Accordingly, construction companies and residents have conflicting views on defects in apartment housing. To address this issue, this study aimed to accurately identify the main disputes surrounding defects in multi-family housing complexes or multi-dwelling unit apartment housing caused by such sharply different perspectives and suggest improvement measures. First, standards to determine different defects and remuneration standards between the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the court were analyzed. Then, problems were derived through an analysis of defects in past court cases, and the differences in perspectives between construction companies and residents were identified based on defect data from various construction companies. To tackle these issues, a classification measure for establishing a defect database for multi-family homes was also proposed.

  • The residue compounds of sulfuric acid-carbon fiber system were obtained from P100, M40, TZ307, and T300 fibers. The fibers which easily formed intercalation compound had small change of d002 value, but, large change of diameter of fiber. It was considered that the cracks in carbon fiber were due to the this conflicting result. The resistivities of residue compound of carbon fibers were increased with the large change of diameter of fibers. It is thought that the reason of our results is increasing defects such as crack in fibers. From the UV reflection spectra, it was found that reflectances of residue compounds were all decreased and the residue compounds were more stable than intercalation compounds.

  • Heating pipes burst was occurred in the apartment complex that was applied floor radiant heating system. There were two opinions for the cause of the bursted heating pipes that was the flaw during construction and defects in the product and also there were conflicting among them. Officials analyzed it in order to investigate the cause of the rupture. Tensile test results showed different tensile strength between the lower part of heating pipe and the upper part of heating pipes. The lower tensile strength is maintained while the top was not secured. The reason why rupture heating pipes is that flow velocity isn't secured and then the air get stagnant. Stagnant air makes hardening. It is caused rupturing. The proper flow rate was confirmed 0.166 m/sec after experiment. It isn't make stagnant air inside heating pipes.

  • Boron nitride nanotubes and carbon nanotubes are the most representative one-dimensional nanostructures, and have received great attention as reinforcement for multifunctional composites for their excellent physical properties. The two nanotubes have similar excellent mechanical stiffness, strength, and heat conduction properties. Therefore, the reinforcing effect of these two nanotubes is greatly influenced by the properties of their interface with the polymer matrix. In this paper, recent comparative studies on the reinforcing effect of boron nitride nanotubes and carbon nanotubes through experimental pull-out test and in-silico simulation are summarized. In addition, the conflicting aspect of the two different nanotubes with structural defects in their side wall is discussed on the viscoelastic damping performance of nanocomposites.

  • The criminal procedure is based upon two ideal values, or 'speedy trial and economy of litigation' and 'finding truth and guarantee of human rights', which are conflicting each other. The so called summary trial system, a simplified procedure through which a judge handles clearly obvious and minor offences in a quick and efficient manner, has its essential purpose of termination lawsuits promptly and freeing suspects or defendants from criminal procedure at the earliest possible moment. But its excessive emphasis on this purport is very likely to result in insufficient examination and inadequate protection of suspects' or defendants' rights. Therefore, the summary trial system needs a variety of safeguards to prevent these feasible - but undesirable - effects. From this point of view, we should objectively review the current summary trial system. The main object of this study is to investigate what problems the system has both in institution and in practice, and to suggest legal measures, including the abolition of it, to improve the simplified procedure. In conclusion, the summary trial system should be maintained because it has still more merits than faults. And these defects will be able to be overcome by reform measures ; for example, the introduction of the right to opt between the summary procedure and the formal trial, the abolition of detention and so on.
