버스전용차로 구간 유형별 버스사고영향요인 분석 기초연구 (A Basic Study on Analysis of Influencing factor of Bus Accidents in Bus Lane Section)

  • Various social problems such as traffic congestion, car accidents and environmental problems(air pollution, noises etc.) have been happening in the Seoul metropolitan area that has the car oriented traffic system providing cars continuously. Along with this, the financial burden caused by current oil price anxiety made paradigm shift from caroriented to public transportation-oriented. Its typical example is an arterial branch bus system changing(bus lane through the center of main road) started in Seoul in July, 2004. But study on safety analysis of bus lane and characteristic of accidents are not sufficient enough to now. The bus lanes are expanded to provide roads for better traffic operation and accidents between buses and pedestrians or ordinary vehicles are considered main problems. This study divided each bus route of median bus lane(bus-only lane through the center of main roads) and bus lane at roadside by intersection and collected and analysed data about influence variables of bus accidents chosen in each section. We constructed a logistic model using collected data. As a result, bus lane at roadside are used by both buses and other kinds of vehicles differently from median bus lane and showed such characteristic in accident influence. Therefore access management to factors causing conflict and improvement of operation management are required. In case of median bus lane, the more buses moving general vehicle lane and traffic volume of section were, the more accidents happened. In case that stop line of center lane is not backward, view blocking of vehicles turning left caused accidents.

우천시 비보호좌회전에서의 간격수락 행태모형 개발 (Development of Gap Acceptance Models for Permitted Left Turn Intersections during Rainfall)

  • PURPOSES : A complete signal system is not always the best solution for improving traffic operation efficiency at intersections. An alternative solution is to use a Protected Permitted Left Turn (PPLT) operation method. However, the PPLT method needs to be developed after a detailed study of driving tendencies, most notably the gap acceptance behavior, for successful implementation. In this study, the gap acceptance behavior was investigated under various variables and weather conditions, especially under rain, and the results were compared to the case of normal weather. The results of this study will be helpful in introducing the PPLT method, and are important considering the tendency of attempting unprotected left turns that is extremely common in Korean drivers. METHODS : Data was obtained by analyzing traffic footage at four intersections on a day when the precipitation was greater than 5 mm/h. The collected data was classified into seven variables for statistical analysis. Finally, we used logistic regression analysis to develop a probability distribution model. RESULTS : Gap, traffic volume, and the number of conflicting lanes were factors affecting the gap acceptance behavior of unprotected left turns under rainy conditions. CONCLUSIONS : The probability of attempting unprotected left turns is higher for larger gaps. On the other hand, the probability of attempting unprotected left turns decreases with an increase in the traffic volume. Finally, an increase in the number of conflict lanes leads to a decrease in the probability of attempting unprotected left turns.

미시적 시뮬레이션을 이용한 중앙버스전용차로 효과분석 (Effectiveness Analysis of Exclusive Median Bus Lane that Uses Microsimulation)

  • PURPOSES : In this study, the effects of when median exclusive bus lanes were applied to Daejeon trunk road (Wolpyeng crossway~Seodaejeon crossway, 6.3km) and (Daeduck Bridge 4~Kyeryong 4, 2.6km) by Microscopic Simulation VISSIM (5.0) was studied. The median exclusive bus lanes are one of the measures of transportation system manage techniques that can especially improve the efficiency of public transportation facilities. METHODS : According to the analysis of VISSIM on the Gyerong mainroad and Daedeok mainroad, when the median exclusive bus lanes were applied unlike when the roadside bus-only lanes were applied, the average travel speed of vehicles decreased but the average delay time and travel time increased. This arised from the changes in the geometric structure of the road which occurred the reduction of vehicle lane in the center of the road. RESULTS : In the case of bus, on the other hand, the average travel speed increased but the average delay time and travel time decreased. This is because the problems such as illegal parking and stopping, secondary road in out vehicle, and conflict of intersection right turn that roadside bus-only lanes occurred was solved. CONCLUSIONS : Although the introduction of median exclusive bus lanes will have a negative effect on general traffic flow due to the aggravation of travel, decrease of passenger car usage will lead to decrease of traffic volume. Therefore, smooth vehicle travel is expected.

비보호좌회전에서의 간격수락 행태모형 개발 (Development of Gap Acceptance Models for Permitted Left Turn Intersections)

  • PURPOSES : Permitted left turn is a turning maneuver in which a vehicle turns left using a gap between oncoming vehicles, called gap acceptance, and it enables for more efficient traffic operation at intersections. In Korea, the permitted left turn has not been a common maneuver at signalized or un-signalized intersections. However, many experts and the Police Agency tried to apply this effective turning maneuver at intersections in Korea since 2010. Though the investigation of gap acceptance is significantly important in understanding a driver's behavior at intersections, there have not been many studies about this topic, specifically a study to develop probability models of gap acceptance behavior. METHODS : In this study, the probability model of gap acceptance behavior for a permitted left turn was developed based on observational field studies. To develop the model, seven variables were analyzed including gap, waiting time, traffic volume, conflict-flow vehicle type, left-turning vehicle type, the number of lane, and time. RESULTS : In the final model, gap and left-turning vehicle type were found to be significant influencing factors. CONCLUSIONS : Through this model development, it was concluded that as the gap size increased, the probability of gap acceptance was higher. Moreover, when a left-turning vehicle was a passenger car, the probability of gap acceptance was higher than compared to large size buses or freight cars.

고속도로 화물차의 군집주행이 교통류에 미치는 영향 및 전용차로 효과 연구 (A Study on the Impacts of Truck Platooning on Freeway Traffic-Flow and the Effect of Dedicated Lane)

  • 화물차 군집주행이 화물교통량 증가에 따른 문제를 해결할 수 있는 대안으로 떠오르는 가운데, 화물차 군집주행이 교통류에 미치는 영향과 군집주행 전용차로 도입 효과를 분석하는 연구를 수행하였다. 연구결과, 교통량이 많고 화물차 혼입률이 높아질수록 화물차의 군집비율이 높아지고 최대 군집형성 규모가 증가함에 따라 군집주행으로 인한 평균속도 증가효과가 더 크게 나타났다. 하지만, 진출입 등으로 대기행렬이 발생한 경우에는 평균속도 증가효과는 기대하기 어려우며 오히려 처리량이 감소할 수 있는 것으로 분석되었으므로 접속부의 용량 확보 등 접속도로와 연계된 교통운영 전략이 필요하다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 군집 전용차로의 효과는 자율주행화물차 비율(MPR)이 100%가 되어 한 개 차로가 완전히 자율주행화물차만으로 운영될 경우에만 미 도입 시 보다 긍정적 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. 본 연구는 국내 도로·교통 조건을 시나리오에 반영하여 군집주행의 영향을 종합적으로 분석하였으므로 구간별, 시간대별로 군집주행 및 전용차로의 영향을 가늠해 볼 수 있으며, 이는 향후 화물차 군집주행을 고려한 도로 운영전략 수립이나 관리에 기초자료로 사용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

보행자 우선 출발신호의 적정 시간 산출 연구 (Study on the Appropriate Time for Leading Pedestrian Intervals)

  • 비보호좌회전 및 우회전 차량으로 인해 보행신호 시 보행자가 교통사고 위험에 노출되어 있는 신호교차로에서 보행자의 안전이 담보될 수 있는 교통신호체계에 대한 요구가 증가하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 비보호좌회전 및 우회전 차량과 보행자 상충 예방을 위한 보행자 우선 출발신호(leading pedestrian interval, LPI) 교통신호체계의 국내 도입에 따른 적정 운영방안을 수립하고자 한다. 이를 위해 객관적이고 현실성 있는 연구 수행을 위해 전문가와 일반인을 대상으로 보행자 우선 출발신호 도입이 필요에 대한 설문조사를 실시하였다. 국내 여건에 맞는 보행자 우선 출발신호 도입을 위한 현장 적용 조건을 수립하고 비보호좌회전 및 우회전 시범운영 대상지를 선정하여 산출된 보행자 우선 출발신호의 적정시간을 대상교차로에 적용하였다. 횡단보도 내 도착차량 속도 분석과 보행신호 위반율을 분석한 결과 보행신호 등화 시 횡단보도 내 도착차량 속도가 감소되었고, 보행신호 위반율이 개선되어 보행자가 보다 안전한 환경에서 보행하는 것이 현장에서도 확인되었다.

지방부 비신호 교차로 교통사고 심각도 예측모형 개발 - 수도권 주변 및 전라북도 지역의 3지 비신호 교차로를 중심으로 - (Development of Severity Model for Rural Unsignalized Intersection Crashes)

  • 일반도로구간에서의 사고발생건수는 2000년부터 2006년까지 감소추세를 보이는 반면 교차로에서의 교통사고건수는 현재까지 꾸준하게 증가하고 있기 때문에 교차로에서의 안전성을 증대시키기 위한 노력이 절실히 필요한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 신호교차로에서의 도로조건, 교통조건, 교통운영상의 조건 등을 분석하여 교차로의 설계 안전성을 저해시키는 요인들을 찾아내고, 그 요인들과 사고와의 상관관계를 이용하여 지방부 4지 신호교차로의 안전성 판단을 위한 사고 예측모형을 개발하고자한다. 또한 사전에 위험요소를 제거하여 교차로에서의 안전성 평가를 위한 가이드라인을 제시함으로서, 교차로에서의 안전성을 높이는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 교차로에서의 사고분석을 위하여 비선형 회귀분석을 통해 사고모형을 개발하였고, 이러한 모형들을 이용하여 차대차 사고에 영향을 미치는 주요 설명변수들에 대한 분석을 시도하였다. 모형분석결과, 포아송회귀분석(Poisson Regression)이 모형개발에 가장 적합한 것으로 나타났으며, 사고에 영향을 미치는 변수로는 좌회전 전용차로, 횡단보도, 제한속도, 조명시설, 교차각, ADT 등으로 분석되었다.

보행신호 1주기 2회 부여 운영 방안 연구 (Study on the Application of Pedestrian Twice Crossing)

  • 우리나라 교통사고 사망자 중 보행자 사망이 높은 비율을 차지하고 있어, 정책적으로 보행안전에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 하지만 보행신호시간 계획의 경우 보행 편의 및 신호주기를 고려하지 않고 횡단보도 길이를 기준으로 보행신호시간을 적용하다 보니, 신호기가 설치된 폭이 좁은 부도로 횡단보도의 경우, 횡단거리에 비해 상대적으로 보행대기시간이 길어 보행자의 무단횡단을 유발하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 신호기가 설치된 부도로 횡단보도 중 불합리한 신호시간 계획으로 인해 보행자의 무단횡단이 많은 교차로를 대상으로 보행신호를 1주기 2회 부여하고 신호체계에 따른 운영적·안전적 효과를 정량적, 정성적으로 비교 분석하였다. 그 결과, 무단횡단과 보행대기시간이 감소하는 것으로 나타났으며, 보행신호시간 적용간격이 짧을수록 무단횡단은 감소하는 것으로 분석되었다. 다만, 보행자 노출에 따른 차량 상충위험이 있어 보행신호 1주기 2회 부여 운영에 대한 안전성 확대 방안을 제시하였다.

지하철 역사내 동선 분리 시스템을 활용한 보행편의 및 이동성 증진 (Improvement of Pedestrian Convenience and Mobility by Applying the Walking Guidance System in Subway Stations)

  • 지하철 역사 공간 내 보행교통류의 혼잡 상황은 역사의 이용효율을 저해시킨다. 특히 방향별 동선의 미분리로 인한 보행자간 상충은 보행자의 이동저항을 증가시키며 통행시간과 안전사고에 부정적인 영향을 끼치게 된다. 본 연구에서는 미시적 움직임에 기반한 양방향 보행교통류의 통행 특성을 분석하였으며, 동선 분리로 인한 운영상의 효과를 분석하는 모형을 개발하였다. 이산요소법에 따라 역사 공간을 2차원 grid 구조로 해석하였으며, 각 grid에 존재하는 cell 별로 보행자의 움직임이 이루어진다고 보았다. 그 결과 양방향 보행교통류가 상충하는 상황에서는 동선을 분리시키고, 우측통행을 유도하여 보행자들의 진행 방향을 정돈시키는 경우가 가장 효율이 좋은 것으로 분석되었다. 이에, 동선 분리 시스템을 적용하여 보행편의 및 이동성을 증진시키기 위한 시사점을 제시하고자 한다.

독립신호 교차로에서의 교통안전을 위한 서비스수준 결정방법의 개발 (DEVELOPMENT OF SAFETY-BASED LEVEL-OF-SERVICE CRITERIA FOR ISOLATED SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS)

  • The Highway Capacity Manual specifies procedures for evaluating intersection performance in terms of delay per vehicle. What is lacking in the current methodology is a comparable quantitative procedure for ass~ssing the safety-based level of service provided to motorists. The objective of the research described herein was to develop a computational procedure for evaluating the safety-based level of service of signalized intersections based on the relative hazard of alternative intersection designs and signal timing plans. Conflict opportunity models were developed for those crossing, diverging, and stopping maneuvers which are associated with left-turn and rear-end accidents. Safety¬based level-of-service criteria were then developed based on the distribution of conflict opportunities computed from the developed models. A case study evaluation of the level of service analysis methodology revealed that the developed safety-based criteria were not as sensitive to changes in prevailing traffic, roadway, and signal timing conditions as the traditional delay-based measure. However, the methodology did permit a quantitative assessment of the trade-off between delay reduction and safety improvement. The Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) specifies procedures for evaluating intersection performance in terms of a wide variety of prevailing conditions such as traffic composition, intersection geometry, traffic volumes, and signal timing (1). At the present time, however, performance is only measured in terms of delay per vehicle. This is a parameter which is widely accepted as a meaningful and useful indicator of the efficiency with which an intersection is serving traffic needs. What is lacking in the current methodology is a comparable quantitative procedure for assessing the safety-based level of service provided to motorists. For example, it is well¬known that the change from permissive to protected left-turn phasing can reduce left-turn accident frequency. However, the HCM only permits a quantitative assessment of the impact of this alternative phasing arrangement on vehicle delay. It is left to the engineer or planner to subjectively judge the level of safety benefits, and to evaluate the trade-off between the efficiency and safety consequences of the alternative phasing plans. Numerous examples of other geometric design and signal timing improvements could also be given. At present, the principal methods available to the practitioner for evaluating the relative safety at signalized intersections are: a) the application of engineering judgement, b) accident analyses, and c) traffic conflicts analysis. Reliance on engineering judgement has obvious limitations, especially when placed in the context of the elaborate HCM procedures for calculating delay. Accident analyses generally require some type of before-after comparison, either for the case study intersection or for a large set of similar intersections. In e.ither situation, there are problems associated with compensating for regression-to-the-mean phenomena (2), as well as obtaining an adequate sample size. Research has also pointed to potential bias caused by the way in which exposure to accidents is measured (3, 4). Because of the problems associated with traditional accident analyses, some have promoted the use of tqe traffic conflicts technique (5). However, this procedure also has shortcomings in that it.requires extensive field data collection and trained observers to identify the different types of conflicts occurring in the field. The objective of the research described herein was to develop a computational procedure for evaluating the safety-based level of service of signalized intersections that would be compatible and consistent with that presently found in the HCM for evaluating efficiency-based level of service as measured by delay per vehicle (6). The intent was not to develop a new set of accident prediction models, but to design a methodology to quantitatively predict the relative hazard of alternative intersection designs and signal timing plans.
