Because of relatively heavy dead weight of concrete itself and unavoidable heat of massive concrete in bridge piers, circular hollow columns are widely used in Korean highway bridges. Since the occurrence of 1995 Kobe earthquake, there have been much concerns about seismic design for various infrastructures, inclusive of bridge structures. It is, however, understood that there are not much research works for nonlinear behavior of circular hollow columns subjected to eqrthquake motions. The objective of this experimental research is to investigate nonlinear behavior of circular hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers under the quasi-static cyclic load, and then to enhance their ductility by strengthening the plastic hinge region with glassfiber sheets. Particularly for this test, constant 10 cyclic loads have been repeatedly actuated to investigate the magnitude of strength degradation for the displacement ductility factor. Important test parameters are seismic design, confinement steel ratio, axial force and load pattern. It is observed from quasi-static tests for 7 bridge piers that the seismically designed columns and the retrofitted columns show better performance than the nonseismically designed colums, i.e. about 20% higher for energy dissipation capacity and about 70% higher for curvatures.

It is known that semiconductor quantum-dot (QD) heterostructures have superior zero-dimensional quantum confinement, and they have been successfully applied to semiconductor laser diodes (QDLDs) for optical communication and infrared photodetectors (QDIPs) for thermal images [1]. The self-assembled QDs are normally formed at Stranski-Krastanov (S-K) growth mode utilizing the accumulated strain due to lattice-mismatch existing at heterointerfaces between QDs and cap layers. In order to increase the areal density and the number of stacks of QDs, recently, sub-monolayer (SML)-thick QDs (SQDs) with reduced strain were tried by equivalent thicknesses thinner than a wetting layer (WL) existing in conventional QDs (CQDs) by S-K mode. Despite that it is very different from CQDs with a well-defined WL, the SQD structure has been successfully applied to QDIP[2]. In this study, optical characteristics are investigated by using photoluminescence (PL) spectra taken from self-assembled InAs/GaAs QDs whose coverage are changing from submonolayer to a few monolayers. The QD structures were grown by using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on semi-insulating GaAs (100) substrates, and formed at a substrate temperature of 480$^{\circ}C$ followed by covering GaAs cap layer at 590$^{\circ}C$. We prepared six 10-period-stacked QD samples with different InAs coverages and thicknesses of GaAs spacer layers. In the QD coverage below WL thickness (~1.7 ML), the majority of SQDs with no WL coexisted with a small amount of CQDs with a WL, and multi-peak spectra changed to a single peak profile. A transition from SQDs to CQDs was found before and after a WL formation, and the sublevel of SQDs peaking at (1.32${\pm}$0.1) eV was much closer to the GaAs bandedge than that of CQDs (~1.2 eV). These revealed that QDs with no WL could be formed by near-ML coverage in InAs/GaAs system, and single-mode SQDs could be achieved by 1.5 ML just below WL that a strain field was entirely uniform.

Two-month old male Shih Tzu weighing 2.1 kg was presented with alopecia in black-haired areas of the skin. The hair loss had been present since five weeks of age. There was no history of pruritus on any part of the body. No other symptoms had been recognized. Physical examination found no abnormalities other than hair loss. Skin examination showed marked alopecia of black-haired area of the body. The white areas appeared to have hair growth of normal density and texture. Affected pigmented areas showed no evidence of skin lesions. Skin scraping and fungal culture were negative. Microscopic examination of plucked black hairs showed marked pigment clumping in the remnants of the follicles and were mainly in telogen phase. But white hairs were normal in various stages of hair growth. The diagnosis of black hair follicular dysplasia was made based on the history, alopecia of the pigmented areas, the confinement of abnormalities to dark areas, and the normal unpigmented areas.
The objective of this experimental study is to find the allowable level of axial load to give the proper flexural ductility according to the yield strength of lateral ties, and the distribution and amount of longitudinal bars used in confined high-strength concrete columns. Twelve concrete columns with a 20 cm square section and 80 cm high were tested under hi-axial loads. It was observed that the ductility tends to be improved at the axial loads not less than 0.4f$\_$ck/A$\_$g/. The utilization of high-strength ties in accordance with the ACI 318-99 can cause the brittle failure due to the wide tie spacing. Under the high level of axial loads not less than 0.4f$\_$ck/A$\_$g/. it is necessary for the buckling prevention of the longitudinal bars and the proper ductility improvement to use the high-strength ties with the consideration of the volumetric ratio and confinement type of the lateral ties, and the distribution of the longitudinal bars.
This paper presents experimental and analytical studies on long-term behavior of square CFT columns with diaphragm. In order to investigate the effect of the diaphragm on the long~term behavior, experiments for six specimens with two diaphragms and three different column length, and three-dimensional finite element analysis for each specimen have been performed. The finite element models considering the interface behavior between the steel tube and the inner concrete were verified from comparison of the test results with the analysis results. From the test and the analysis results, the following conclusions were obtained. The confinement effect created by the diaphragm does not depends on column length and influences only a part of the whole column that is from the end to the depth which is the same to the width of the column. The shortening of the column with diaphragm which covers more than a half of the cross sectional area of the inner concrete is the same as that of the column under a load applied on the steel tube and the entire section of the inner concrete.
Sand compaction pile and stone column replacement methods have been commonly used for improving soft ground in the nearshore. Recently, DCM (Deep cement mixing) method, which can harden soft clays by mixing with cement, is more popularly used in such soft ground improvement. Sandy soils also exist in the seashore. Therefore, in this study, the effect of salinity in sea water and curing methods on the strength of cemented sand was evaluated in terms of unconfined compressive strength (UCS). The sand was mixed with five different cement ratios and distilled water or sea water, and then compacted into a cylindrical specimen. They were cured for 3 days under sea water for DCM construction condition and air cured for onshore curing condition. When a specimen was cured under sea water without confinement, it was easily collapsed due to initiation of cracks. When the cement ratio and curing method were the same, the UCS of the specimen without sea water was at maximum 3.5 times higher than those with sea water. The sea water used for mixing sand had more influence on strength reduction than the sea water used for curing. When the cement ratio was the same, the UCS of air-cured specimen was at average 2 times higher than those of water-cured specimen, regardless of water used.

Recently, there are an increasing number of studies on the method of wrapping the outer wall of granular piles with geosynthetic fibers such as geotextile or geogrid that has a certain level of tensile strength as an alternative method for the ground improvement techniques. In this study, triaxial compression tests are performed on the sand and clay specimen encased with various textiles to evaluate the reinforcing effect with regard to the tensile strength of the textile. Furthermore, triaxial compression tests are performed on the clay specimen inserted by sand only and sand encased with geosynthetics to compare behavioral differences between the conventional sand compaction pile and geosynthetic encased sand pile with regard to the replacement ratio, ${\alpha}_s$ and the tensile strength of the geosynthetics. Based on the experimental results, the strength enhancement due to the textile is affected by the longitudinal tensile strength rather than the transverse one of the applied textile. The effect of the confinement by the textile encasement results in the large increase of the cohesions. The overall behaviors, such as shear strength, pore pressure parameter at failure and stress ratio, of the geosynthetic encased sand pile is quite different from those of the conventional sand compaction pile.

Triploidy was induced in the marine medaka, Oryzias dancena by cold shock treatment ($0^{\circ}C$) of fertilized eggs for 30, 45, or 60 min, applied two minutes after fertilization. The triploid genotype was induced by each of the thermal shock regimes tested. The best result was obtained when the eggs were treated for 45 min, which induced triploidy in all the resulting fish. Triploidy was confirmed using chromosomal and flow cytometer analyses, and erythrocyte measurements. The surface areas and volumes of the erythrocytes of triploid fish were significantly larger than those of diploid fish, and their chromosome number (3N=72) was 1.5 times greater that for the diploids (2N=48). Based on a flow cytometer analysis, the triploid fish had approximately 1.5 times the cellular DNA content (2.40 pg/cell) of the diploid specimens (1.61 pg/cell). Data from this study provide the basis for the development of unique models for studying reproductive confinement in transgenic fish.
This study established a displacement ductility ratio model for ductile design for the boundary element of shear walls. To determine the curvature distribution along the member length and displacement at the free end of the member, the distributions of strains and internal forces along the shear wall section depth were idealized based on the Bernoulli's principle, strain compatibility condition, and equilibrium condition of forces. The confinement effect at the boundary element, provided by transverse reinforcement, was calculated using the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete proposed by Razvi and Saatcioglu. The curvatures corresponding to the initial yielding moment and 80% of the ultimate state after the peak strength were then conversed into displacement values based on the concept of equivalent hinge length. The derived displacement ductility ratio model was simplified by the regression approach using the comprehensive analytical data obtained from the parametric study. The proposed model is in good agreement with test results, indicating that the mean and standard deviation of the ratios between predictions and experiments are 1.05 and 0.19, respectively. Overall, the proposed model is expected to be available for determining the transverse reinforcement ratio at the boundary element for a targeted displacement ductility ratio.
An improved unbonded-type column strengthening procedure using wire rope and T-shaped steel plate units was proposed. Eight strengthened columns and an unstrengthened control column were tested under concentric axial load. The main variables considered were the volume ratio of wire rope and the flange width and configuration of T-shaped steel plates. Axial load capacity and ductility ratio of columns tested were compared with predictions obtained from the equation specified in ACI 318-05 and those of conventionally tied columns tested by Chung et al., respectively. In addition, a mathematical model was proposed to evaluate the complete stress-strain relationship of concrete confined by the wire rope and T-plate units. Test results showed that the axial load capacity and ductility of columns increased with the increase of the volume ratio of wire rope and the flange width of T-plates. In particular, at the same lateral reinforcement index, a much higher ductility ratio was observed in the strengthened columns having the volume ratio of wire rope above 0.0039 than in the tied columns. A mathematical model for the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete using the proposed strengthening procedure is developed. The predicted stress-strain curves were in good agreement with test results.
