  • This paper describes an analysis of the three-dimensional eddy current problems by the finite element method using magnetic vector potential and electric scalar potential. The finite element formulation uses first-order shape functions and tetrahedral elements. The validity of this formalation is ensured as the result of the sphere conductor model problem in a sinusoidal magnetic field.

  • In this Paper, a beat recognition method from a sequence of images of conducting person was proposed. Hand position was detected using color discrimination, and symbolized by quantization. Then a motion of the conductor was represented as a sequence of symbols. HMM (Hidden Markov Model), which is excellent for recognition of sequence pattern with some level of variation, was used to recognize the sequence of symbols to be a motion for a beat.

  • High impedance fault(HIF) is defined as fault the general overcurrent relay can not detect or interrupt. Especially when HIF occur in residential areas, energized high voltage conductor results in fire hazard, equipment damage or personal threat. This paper proposes the model of the high impedance fault in transmission line using the ZnO arrester and resistance to be implemented within EMTP. The performance of the proposed model is tested on a typical 154[kV] korean transmission line system under various fault conditions. Wavelet transform is efficient and useful for the detection of high impedance fault in power system, because it uses variable windows according to frequency. In this paper, HIF detection method using wavelet transform can distinguish HIF form similar fault like arcfurance load, capacitor bank switching and line switching.

  • This paper is concerned with a computational method for recovering a crack shape of steam generator tubes of nuclear plants. Problems on the shape identification are discussed arising in the characterization of a structural defect in a conductor using data of eddy current inspection. A surface defect on the generator tube ran be detected as a probe impedance trajectory by scanning a pancake type coil. First, a mathematical model of the inspection process is derived from the Maxwell's equation. Second, the input and output relation is given by the approximate model by virtue of the hybrid use of the finite element and boundary element method. In that model, the crack shape is characterized by the unknown coefficients of the B-spline function which approximates the crack shape geometry. Finally, a parameter estimation technique is proposed for recovering the crack shape using data from the probe coil. The computational experiments were successfully tested with the laboratory data.

  • This paper describes the overvoltage obtained by surge behavior analysis in testing underground distribution systems. Model systems consist of overhead distribution line and underground cable. Such model system considered various characteristics of actual distribution systems will be soon constructed at testing yard. Simulation is carried out under various states such as cable kinds, cable length, lightning wave and time, and branch circuits. Model is established by EMTP/ATPDraw. Line Constants are calculated by ATP_LCC. When the direct lightning surge strikes on conductor of overhead line, the overvoltage is calculated using EMTP/ATPDraw in many cases. Simulation results will be compared with real testing results at testing yard in the near future. The compared results will be used to establish protection methods in actual underground distribution systems.

  • Nowadays the high-Tc Superconducting Fault current Limiter (SFCL) is one of the superconducting devices which are very closed to commercialization. The most popular model of High-Tc SFCL is a magnetic shielding type. A superconductor of magnetic shielding type SFCL can be stable in the superconducting state, because there is no contact between the superconductor and the normal conductor. But this model needs large place to set up and in a fault condition, mechanical vibrations may happen to damage the superconductor or total device. In this paper, to solve these problems, the simplified model of magnetic shielding type SFCL was introduced.

  • During the fast current and field ramp up experiment with CICC (Cable-In-Conduit Conductor) non-insulated 3 strand superconducting magnet, the unbalanced current distribution associated with the loop current has been obtained directly from the shunt resistor voltage data. To explain the generation of the loop current during the current ramp up, the steady-state three strand loop current model was proposed. This model gives an explanation for the relation between the loop current and the relation between the loop current and the twist geometry of the strands. According to this model, the twist geometry of the strand has significant influence on the generation of the loop current especially in the large superconducting magnet.

  • Eddy currents are induced when a nonmagnetic conductive material is moving subjected to the magnetic field due to a permanent magnet. These currents circulates in the conductive material and are dissipated, causing a repulsive force between the magnet and the conductor. Using this concept, the eddy current damping can be used as a viscous damping. The present study investigates the characteristics of a magnetic damping analytically and experimentally. The theoretical model of a eddy current damping is developed from electromagnetics and is verified from experiments. The drop test of a magnet in the cooper tube shows that the present model can accurately predict the damping force. Additionally, the dynamic test of a eddy current damping is carried to verify the present model.

  • The fast current and field ramp-up experiment was done with the superconducting magnet that is made of three non-insulated strand CICC (Cable-In- Conduit Conductor). The shunt the unbalanced current magnet enabled the unbalanced current measurement which is believed to be associated with the loop current. To explain the generation of the loop current during the current ramp up. the steady-state three strand loop current model was proposed. This model gives an explanation for the relation between the loop current and the twist geometry of the strands. According to this model. The twisr geometry and the surface contact resistance of the strand has significant influence on the generation of the loop current especially in the large superconducting magnet.
