  • Uniform current distribution among conductor layers in HTS cables using IPTs (inter-phase transformers) was investigated. Conventional methods for current distribution, in which resistors are inserted to conductor layers, causes additional loss. In contrast, IPTs, which use magnetic coupling, make it possible that the current in parallel circuits is distributed uniformly with any load, and minimize the loss. In this study, IPTs were designed and fabricated for examination of uniform current distribution in the conductor layers of HTS cables. The ITP was designed through calculation of its impedance that can cancel the inductance of the conduction layers. The experimental setup consisted of four IPTs and four inductors that simulate the conductor layer inductance. Each layer was designed to feed 10 A. We examined the behavior of current distribution with IPTs for various layer inductances.

  • Bidirectional DC-DC converters allow transfer of power between two dc sources, in either direction. Due to their ability to reverse the direction of flow of power, Dey are being increasingly used in many applications such as battery charge/dischargers, do uninterruptible power supplies, electrical vehicle motor drives, aerospace power systems, telecom power supplies, etc. This Paper Proposes a new bidirectional Sepic/Zeta converter. It has low switching loss and low conduction loss due to auxiliary communicated circuit and synchronous rectifier operation, respectively Because of positive and buck/boost-like DC voltage transfer function(M=D/1-D), the proposed converter is very desirable for use in distributed power system. The proposed converter also has both transformer-less version and transformer one.

  • Due to high power ratings and low conduction loss, the IGBT has become more attractive in high power applications. However, its slower characteristics than those of MOSFET cause severe switching losses and switching frequency limitation. This paper proposes the IGBT's soft switching concept with the help of MOSFET, where each of the IGBT and MOSFET plays its role during on-periods and switching instants. Also, the switching losses are analyzed by using the linearized modeling and the modeling and the operations of a converter are investigated to confirm the soft switching of IGBT's.

  • This paper is studied on a novel buck-boost isolated converter for high efficiency and high power factor. The switching devices in the proposed converter are operated by soft switching technique using a new quasi-resonant circuit, and are driven with discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) according to pulse width modulation (PWM). The quasi-resonant circuit makes use of a step up-down inductor and a loss-less snubber capacitor. The proposed converter with DCM also simplifies the requirement of control circuit and reduces a number of control components. The input ac current waveform in the proposed converter becomes a quasi sinusoidal waveform in proportion to the magnitude of input ac voltage under constant switching frequency. As a result, it is obtained by the proposed converter that the switching power losses are low, the efficiency of the converter is high, and the input power factor is nearly unity. The validity of analytical results is confirmed by some simulation results on computer and experimental results.

  • In this paper, a novel multiple output converter using quasi load is proposed. Conventional multiple output converters using multi-winding transformer has poor output voltage regulations. To solve this problem, there are many proposals like post regulation method, weighted control method, and etc. However, the post regulation method regulates output voltage tightly but its conduction loss and cost are increased. And the weighted control can achieve high efficiency and low cost but its regulation is not enough. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a novel multiple output converter using quasi load. The proposed method uses a quasi load which acts like an active dummy load for tight regulation but there is rarely increase of loss and cost. The proposed method is verified by hardware test by two output(24V and 15V) flyback type converter.

  • We have investigated dielectric properties depending on bias voltage in organic light-emitting diodes using 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum $(Alq_3)$ as an electron transport and emissive material. We analyzed the dielectric properties of organic light-emitting diodes using impedance of characteristics. Impedance characteristics was measured complex impedance Z and phase $\theta$ in the frequency range of 40 Hz to $10^8$ Hz. We obtained complex electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, and loss tangent $(tan\delta)$ of the device at room temperature. From these analyses, we are able to interpret a conduction mechanism and dielectric properties contributed by an interfacial and orientational polarization.

  • This paper provides a comparison of high power semiconductor devices in 5MW-class Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) Medium Voltage (MV) wind turbines. High power semiconductor devices of IGBT module type, IGBT press-pack type, and IGCT of both 4.5kV and 6.5kV are considered in this paper. Benchmarking is performed based on neutral-point clamed 3-level back-to-back type voltage source converter supplied from grid voltage of 4160V. The feasible number of semiconductor devices in parallel is designed through the loss analysis considering both conduction and switching losses under the given operating conditions of 5MW-class PMSG wind turbines, particularly for the application in offshore wind farms. The loss analysis is confirmed through PLECS simulations. The comparison result shows that IGBT press-pack type semiconductor device has the highest efficiency and IGCT has the lowest cost factor considering the necessary auxiliary components.

  • In conventional zero-current-switching(ZCS) PWM converters, zero-current turn-off for main switch without increasing voltage/current stresses is achieved at a fixed frequency. The switching loss, stress, and noise, however, can\`t be minimized because they adopt auxiliary switches turned off and main switches turned on under hard-switching condition. In this paper, new ZCS-PWM converters of which all switches are always operating with soft-switching condition are proposed. Therefore, the proposed ZCS-PWM converters are most suitable for systems requiring high-power density Breadboarded ZCS-PWM boost converters using power MOSFET are constructed to verify theoretical analysis.

  • In this study, a selective inverter operation between a 2-level voltage source converter (VSC) and a 3-level T-type VSC (3LT VSC) is proposed to improve the efficiency of a 3LT VSC. The 3LT VSC topology, except for its neutral-point switches, has similar operations as that of the 2-level VSC. If an operation mode is changed according to efficiency, the efficiency can be improved because efficiencies of each methods are depending on current and MI (Modulation Index). The proposed method calculates the power losses of the two topologies and operates as the having lower losses. To calculate the losses, the switching and conduction losses based on the operation mode of each topology were analyzed. The controller determined the operation mode of the 2- or 3-level VSC based on the power loss calculated during every cycle. The validity of the proposed control scheme was investigated through simulation and experiments. The waveform and average efficiency of each method were compared.

  • A new asymmetrical pulse width modulation (PWM) half bridge converter with improved ZVS performance is proposed. The ZVS operation of the proposed converter can be maintained from no load to full load conditions since the magnetizing current of the transformer contributes to the ZVS operation at light loads without considerable conduction loss of the transformer and switch. Synchronous rectification is employed to reduce the rectification loss. Operational principles, large signal modeling, ZVS analysis and design equations are presented. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed converter can achieve a large ZVS range and significant improvement in efficiency for a 100W (5V, 20A) prototype converter.
