  • Background: The Global Adult Tobacco Survey has 15 key indicators, cigarettes smoked per day (CPD) among daily smokers being one of them. The first wave of GATS in 14 countries indicated that mean CPD use is higher in women than men in India only, which is contrary to the current understanding of tobacco use globally. This study was undertaken to understand the unusual findings for mean CPD use in the GATS-India survey. Materials and Methods: Items B06a and B06b of the GATS India survey questionnaire that collected information on daily consumption of manufactured and rolled cigarettes were analyzed using SPSS software. Exclusive users were identified from these items after excluding the concurrent users of other tobacco products. Cigarette type, exclusive use and gender stratified analyses were made. Consumption of different types of cigarettes among the mixed users of manufactured and rolled cigarettes were correlated. Results: Higher mean number of CPD use among male daily-smokers was observed than their female counterparts in product specific analysis. Mean CPD as per GATS cigarette definition was higher in males than females for exclusive users but a reverse trend was observed in case of non-exclusive users. Use of manufactured cigarettes increased with increase in use of rolled cigarette among the mixed users and around half of these users reported equal CPD frequency for the both types of cigarettes. Conclusions: The anomaly in mean CPD estimate in GATS-India data was due to inclusion of two heterogeneous products to define cigarettes, variation in cigarette product specific user proportions contributing to the average and non-exclusive concurrent use of other tobacco products. The consumption pattern of cigarettes among the mixed users highlights bias in CPD reporting. Definition, analysis and interpretation of 'cigarettes per day' in the GATS India survey need to be improved by redefining cigarettes and making product specific analyses.

  • A network model and a Genetic Algorithm(GA) is proposed to solve the simultaneous estimation of the trip distribution and traffic assignment from traffic counts in the congested networks in a logit-based Stochastic User Equilibrium (SUE). The model is formulated as a problem of minimizing the non-linear objective functions with the linear constraints. In the model, the flow-conservation constraints of the network are utilized to restrict the solution space and to force the link flows meet the traffic counts. The objective of the model is to minimize the discrepancies between the link flows satisfying the constraints of flow-conservation, trip production from origin, trip attraction to destination and traffic counts at observed links and the link flows estimated through the traffic assignment using the path flow estimator in the legit-based SUE. In the proposed GA, a chromosome is defined as a vector representing a set of Origin-Destination Matrix (ODM), link flows and travel-cost coefficient. Each chromosome is evaluated from the corresponding discrepancy, and the population of the chromosome is evolved by the concurrent simplex crossover and random mutation. To maintain the feasibility of solutions, a bounded vector shipment is applied during the crossover and mutation.

  • We design, implement, and evaluate a user-level ad hoc network routing protocol on the COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) mobile devices. In situations such as disaster recovery, emergency communication between mobile devices is necessary. For wide deployability and usability of such a system, we design and implement the networking protocols on the user level instead of modifying the kernel of mobile devices. In order to support reliable data transfer in high mobility scenarios, we selected to implement AODV (Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector) as the routing protocol and TCP as the transport layer protocol. With our implementation of ad hoc networking stack on COTS smartphones, we conducted experiments in various networking environments. Our experimental results show that ad hoc networking is possible in up to 12 hops in a line topology and 5 concurrent devices in a star topology.

  • In addition to the VRS-RTK service, FKP-RTK service launched recently in Korea however unlike VRS, it is not yet applied to various surveying tasks. VRS system is operated in two way communication over the mobile Internet. When user send rover position data to network RTK server and the server provides correction data to users continuously. It causes to increase communications load and makes delaying or failure in data transmission depends on server capacity and number of concurrent users. In contrast, since FKP system is one way communication system, user only receives correction data and area correction parameters for the selected Continuous Reference Station from the server. Thus, there is no limitation to the number of concurrent users in FKP system and it would be more efficient than VRS system in terms of economic. To this end, we performed FKP-RTK test for Unified Control Points and Urban Control Points where are located at 5 regions in Korea to evaluate the accuracy. As a result, almost of FKP positioning data are in error range of ${\pm}6.2cm$ in horizontal and it would be enough for construction survey such as for earth work in limited except precise structure survey.

  • In VOD server, in order to guarantee playback of continuous media, such as video, without hiccups for multiusers, the server has to manage its buffer sophisticatedly by prefeching a part of the data into the buffer As the continuous media data buffered by one user can be used again by the others, the number of disk accesses is reduced and then the latency time far the users is also reduced. In this paper, we propose a new buffer management technique for continuous media in VOD server. Our basic algorithm partitions the buffer into groups and then a group of buffer which has the lowest utilization is chosen and partitioned again for a new user. The basic algorithm is extended for supporting multiple streams and clip data and for providing VCR functions. Our proposed technique is able to increase in the number of concurrent users as increasing the utilization of the buffer and to minimize the average waiting time for multiuser accesses as the bandwidth of storage is slowly reached to the limit. In the simulation study for comparing the performance of our technique with that of the existing techniques, we show that the average waiting time is reduced mere than 50% and the number of concurrent users increases by 1 ∼5% as compared with those of the exiting techniques.

  • This study looks into the usage pattern in online games based on genres and socio-demographic characteristics. Compared to the prior studies that adopted survey as their main research method, this study has analyzed the actual data of game login records and adopted parametric modeling and mathematical approach. In terms of the socio-demographic characteristics, the following facts were confirmed: men > women by gender, students > white-collars > housewives > blue-collars > self-employed > jobless(etc.) by occupation, college graduates > K-12 students > high-school graduates > undergrads & grads by academic background, 3∼5 million > 1∼3 million > over 5 million > less than 1 million by income levels, and not married > married by marital status. In terms of genres, the population of the players is in the order of web board games, RPG, action/racing/shooting, and sports. The RPG game is confirmed to have a higher level of MCR (Max Concurrent User Ratio) than any other genres. On the other hand, the hypothesis on the difference in Repeated Use Ratio according to genres is rejected. This study has also confirmed that interactions exist between gender and age; genre and gender; genre and age among online game users, and conducted post-hoc analysis about those interactions.

  • IEEE 802.11ay Wi-Fi is the next generation wireless technology and operates in mmWave band. It supports the MU-MIMO (Multiple User Multiple Input Multiple Output) transmission in which an AP (Access Point) can transmit multiple data streams simultaneously to multiple STAs (Stations). To this end, the AP should perform MU-MIMO beamforming training with the STAs. For efficient MU-MIMO beamforming training, it is important for the AP to estimate signal strength measured at each STA at which multiple beams are used simultaneously. Therefore, in the paper, we propose a deep learning-based link quality estimation scheme. Our proposed scheme estimates the signal strength with high accuracy by utilizing a deep learning model pre-trained for a certain indoor or outdoor propagation scenario. Specifically, to estimate the signal strength of the multiple concurrent beams, our scheme uses the signal strengths of the respective single beams, which can be obtained without additional signaling overhead, as the input of the deep learning model. For performance evaluation, we utilized a Q-D (Quasi-Deterministic) Channel Realization open source software and extensive channel measurement campaigns were conducted with NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) to implement the millimeter wave (mmWave) channel. Our simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme outperforms comparison schemes in terms of the accuracy of the signal strength estimation.
