  • In the recent years, a rigid pavement composed of a flat concrete slab has ken constructed due to the desirable structural strength of concrete, durability and economy. However, despite of precise design and construction of concrete highway pavement, some sections of the 88 Olympic express highway, Jung-bu express highway, and Kyung-bu express highway, which have shown premature cracking, faulting, and pumping before the end of their intended service life, have already been viewed with great concerns by highway officials and engineers. Since environmental variations and traffic loads might be considered as major factors to cause pavement failure problems, the thermal load due to temperature variations between top and bottom surface of the concrete slab was highlighted to verify analytical behavior of concrete slab using the finite element method.

재생 콘크리트를 이용한 소도로 시험포장 (Field Application of Recycled Concrete for a Low Volume Road Pavement)

  • This study evaluated characteristics and performance of recycled concrete as a pavement which was constructed on a low volume road. The recycled concrete was prepared by replacing a half of coarse aggregate with recycled aggregate. Natural sand from a source was used as fine aggregate together with admixtures such as plasticizer and fly ash (0.8% and 5% by wt. of cement, respectively). The length, thickness and width of the pavement were 100mm, 20cm and 3m, respectively. From construction experience, it was found that workability and finishability of the recycled concrete mixture were relatively poor, but strengths were satisfactory. Flexural strength, compressive strength and elastic modulus at 28 days were approximately 45Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 250Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and 240,000 Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. The pavement could be constructed by hand without much difficulty. The surface was finished smoothy by wet fabric and only minor cracks were found on the surface.

순환골재를 활용한 포장용 시멘트콘크리트의 최적배합 도출을 위한 기초 연구 (Fundamental Study on Optimum Mixing Proportion of Cement Concrete Pavement using Recycled Aggregate)

  • OBJECTIVES : This study is to develop the optimum mixing proportions for cement concrete pavement with using recycled aggregates. METHODS : The mixture varied recycled coarse aggregates content from 50 % to 100 % to replace the natural coarse aggregates by weight. Tests for fundamental properties as a cement concrete pavement were conducted before and after hardening of the concrete. RESULTS : It was found that the variation in the amount of the recycled aggregate affected the compressive and flexural strength development, as well as the chloride ion penetration resistance. As the amount of the recycled aggregate content increased the compressive and flexural strength and the resistance to chloride ion penetration decreased. However, the resistance to freeze-thaw reaction was affected significantly. In addition, the gradation of the aggregate became worse and hence so did the coarseness factor as the recycled aggregate amount increased. CONCLUSIONS : The fundamental properties of the concrete with recycled aggregate does not seem to be appropriate when the recycled aggregate quality is not guaranteed up to a some level and its replacement ratio is over 50%. The optimized gradation of the aggregates should also be sought when the recycled aggregate is used for the cement concrete pavement materials.

폐유리분말을 충전재로 사용한 포장용 투수성 폴리머 콘크리트의 공학적 성질 (Engineering properties of permeable polymer concrete for pavement using powdered waste glass as filler)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the void ratio, compressive and flexural strength, and permeability coefficient used powdered waste glass, $CaCO_3$, recycled coarse aggregate and unsaturated polyester resin to find optimum mix design of permeable polymer concrete for pavement. The void ratio and permeability coefficient of permeable concrete for pavement was decreased with increasing the powdered waste glass, respectively. The compressive strength and flexural strength was increased with increasing the powdered waste glass, respectively. In addition, this study found out that required amount of binder was decreased with increasing the powdered waste glass. This fact is expected to have economical effects during the use of powdered waste glass in the manufacture of permeable polymer concrete for pavement. Therefore, powdered waste glass and recycled coarse aggregate can be used for permeable polymer pavement.

친환경 도로포장용 투수콘크리트의 제조와 이를 이용한 도로포장시스템의 수질정화특성 (Development of Environmentally Favorable Porous Concrete and Water Purification Characteristics by the Pavement System)

  • Stormwater pollution is a major problem in urban areas. Pollutants like heavy metals and harmful chemicals in the runoff can endanger soil and ground water, when they are not sufficiently removed doting infiltration. Strength and infiltration capacity of porous concrete are the major problems that must be considered if permeable pavement system are demanded to be used in a drive way application. In this study, a series of compacted porous concrete mixtures and the system of pavement ate tested for the physical characteristics like compressive strength, flexural strength, unit weight, porosity, water permeability, and the purification capacity of contaminated water. The test results obtained indicate that the strength and infiltration capacity of porous concrete are strongly related to its matrix proportion and compaction energy and providing adequate filter layers underneath pavement surface course is one of the most important design considerations of permeable pavement system for pollution retention purpose.

포장가속시험 및 경제성 분석을 통한 절삭 덧씌우기와 비절삭 덧씌우기의 비교 (Comparison of Asphalt Concrete Inlay and Overlay for Rehabilitation of Aged Cement Concrete Pavement through Accelerated Pavement Testing and Life-Cycle Cost Analysis)

  • PURPOSES : So far, aged cement concrete pavement on express highways has been rehabilitated mainly with asphalt concrete inlay. However, potholes were the major problem, and they shortened the life of the inlay mainly owing to the poor drainage of water once it infiltrated the interface of the concrete and asphalt. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance and economic efficiency of asphalt overlay and inlay. METHODS : Overlay and inlay were compared through accelerated pavement testing, and a life-cycle cost analysis was conducted in this study using the CA4PRS program. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : It was found from accelerated pavement testing that the overlay exhibited reflective crack resistance that was more than twice as effective as that of inlay. The total cost (construction cost + user cost) within the analysis period (20 years) of the overlay was 37% lower than that of the inlay.

강상판형교 교면포장 공법 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on Pavement Techniques for Steel Bridge Decks)

  • 본 연구의 주 목적은 교면포장 공법 중에서 인천대교에 사용된 구스 아스팔트와 귤현 대교에 사용된 SMA의 적용 사례를 통하여 발전된 교면포장 공법을 제시하는데 있다. 두 공법의 시공사례를 비교 분석한 결과, 구스 아스팔트는 고온에서의 유동저항성이 작아 소성변형에 취약하며, 이에 반하여 SMA포장은 유지관리에 용이하고 소성변형 등에 유리하다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 강상판 교면포장 공법이 발달된 선진국에서는 보편화되어서, 그에 따른 국내에서의 해결방안을 제시하였다. 그러나, 국내의 경우 다양한 시공 실적이 미흡한 실정이어서 향후 적절한 시공관리와 체계적인 연구를 통하여 보다 발전된 교면 포장공법이 제시되어져야 할 것으로 사료된다.

An Experimental Study of Permeable Concrete Pavement for Practical Use in the Field

  • In rainy weather, permeable concrete pavement has advantages such as good drainage, increased skid resistance, reduced splash and spray behind vehicles for improving the safety of driving vehicles as well as reduction of the traffic noise. It also contributes to improvement of traffic environment. In this study, the fundamental properties of permeable concrete in accordance with maximum size of aggregate, sand percentage and unit cement content were investigated for practical use of permeable concrete pavement. Although the permeability standard for typical permeable asphalt-concrete pavement is $1{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$, the researchers determined that the coefficient of permeability of the permeable concrete should be set higher at $1{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$. Then, the researchers measured the coefficient of permeability, strength, void ratio, and continuous void ratio of the permeable concrete while varying maximum size of the aggregate, sand percentage, unit cement content for detailed analysis. It was found that the void ratio, continuous void ratio, and flexural strength were about 15%, 12%, and 5.0MPa, respectively, when the permeability of the concrete was set at $1{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$. Given that the maximum size of aggregate was $10{\sim}13mm$, we reached the conclusion that the best mix design for permeable concrete was $0{\sim}20%$ of sand percentage and $380kg/m^3$ of unit cement content.

노면 미끄럼저항 증진방앙 연구 (Improvement of Pavement Skid Resistance)

  • Recently, Korea Highway Corporation has attemped to improve the highway safety in accordance with minimizing user's imconveniences. Currently, the Anti Skidding Pavement(ASP) has been introduced as a safety countermeasure on the safety frailty sections. In this study, a series of field evaluations on pavement skid resistance have been conducted on the skid frailty sections to analyze the effects and problems of the Anti Skidding Pavement (ASP), and to understand the behavior of pavement skid resistance due to pavement type, section characteristics, vehicles' speed and traffec volume. Test results show the Anti Skidding Pavement (ASP) has the effects to induce vehicles' speed reduction. However, there are no effects to increase skid resistance. According to these results, it is demanded to improve the applying method of current Anti Skidding Pavement (ASP) to devise an effective safety countermeasure for pavement skid, and to increase pavement skid resistance.

열매체 순환수 배관이 매설된 도로 포장체의 표면 온도 변화와 방열 성능 분석 (Analysis of Surface Temperature Change and Heat Dissipation Performance of Road Pavement with Buried Circulating Water Piping)

  • Hydronic heated road pavement (HHP) systems have well studied and documented by many researchers. However, most of the systems run on asphalt, only a few are tested with concrete, and there rarely is a comparison between those two common road materials in their heating and cooling performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the thermal performance of the HHP, such as heat dissipation performance in winter season while focusing on the surface temperature of the concrete and asphalt pavement. For preliminary study a small-scale experimental system was designed and installed to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics of the HHP in the test field. The system consists of concrete and asphalt slabs made of 1 m in width, 1 m in length, and 0.25 m in height. In two slabs, circulating water piping was embedded at a depth of 0.12 m at intervals of 0.16 m. Heating performance in winter season was tested with different inlet temperatures of 25℃, 30℃, 35℃ and 40℃ during the entire measurement period. The results indicated that concrete's heating performance is better than that of asphalt, showing higher surface temperatures for the whole experiment cases. However, the surface temperature of both concrete and asphalt pavement slabs remained above 0℃ for all experimental conditions. The heat dissipation performance of concrete and asphalt pavements was analyzed, and the heat dissipation of concrete pavement was greater than that of asphalt. In addition, the higher the set temperature of the circulating water, the higher the heat dissipation. On the other hand, the concrete pavement clearly showed a decrease in heat dissipation as the circulating water set temperature decreased, but the decrease was relatively small for the asphalt pavement. Based on this experiment, it is considered that a circulating water temperature of 20℃ or less is sufficient to prevent road ice. However, this needs to be verified by further experiments or computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis.
