  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the optimum thickness of High Performance Concrete bridge deck pavement. The application of High Performance Concrete bridge deck pavement with micro-silica was introduced to north America in the early 1980's. In order to decide the optimum thickness of High Performance Concrete bridge deck pavement, we conducted Finite Element Method analysis with Incheon Grand Bridge constructed by SAMSUNG E&C. From the FEM results, a thickness of five centimeters of High Performance Concrete bridge deck pavement with micro-silica is considered as a resonable value compared with the conventional asphalt bridge deck pavement.

  • The occurrence of longitudinal cracking in concrete deck of box girder bridge is affected by many factors, but the most important factors are the shrinkage and thermal gradient of deck slabs. In this study, therefore, the tensile stresses at the bottom of deck were calculated from the experimental data(autogeneous shrinkage, drying shrinkage, and thermal gradient of deck slab). Also, the possibility of longitudinal cracks at bottom of deck was estimated. For this purpose, full-scale box girder segments have been fabricated and tested. The thermal gradients and shrinkage strains of deck slabs were measured after placement of concrete. Also, analytic program was conducted for the evaluation of longitudinal cracking in bridge deck considering differential shrinkage induced from non-uniform moisture distributions in concrete.

  • A GFRP-concrete composite bridge deck is presented in this paper. This composite deck is composed of concrete and a GFRP plate and is connected by GFRP perfobond (PBL) shear connectors with penetrating GFRP rebar. There are many outstanding advantages in mechanical behavior, corrosion resistance and durability of this composite deck over conventional reinforced concrete decks. To analyze the shear and flexural performance of this GFRP-concrete composite deck, a static loading experiment was carried out on seven specimens. The failure modes, strain development and ultimate bearing capacity were thoroughly examined. Based on elastic theory and strain-based theory, calculation methods for shear and flexural capacity were put forward and revised. The comparison of tested and theoretical capacity results showed that the proposed methods could effectively predict both the flexural and shear capacity of this composite deck. The ACI 440 methods were relatively conservative in predicting flexural capacity and excessively conservative in predicting shear capacity of this composite deck. The analysis of mechanical behavior and the design method can be used for the design of this composite deck and provides a significant foundation for further research.

  • Precast deck joints have larger crack width than cast-in-place concrete decks. The initial crack typically occurs at the maximum moment but cracks on precast joints are significant and lead to failure of the deck. The present crack equation is applied to cast-in-place decks, and requires correction to calculate the crack width of precast deck joints. This research aims to study the crack width correction equation of precast decks by performing static tests using high strength and normal strength concrete. Based on experimental results, the bending strength of the structural connections of the current precast deck is satisfied. However it is not suitable to calculate and control the crack width of precast loop connections using the current design equation. A crack width calculation equation is proposed for crack control of precast deck loop joints. Also included in this paper are recommendations to improve the crack control of loop connections.

  • Reinforced concrete deck slabs are directly affected by traffic loads and they are also susceptible to weather-related problems, such as cracking, reinforcement corrosion, spatting, scaling, delamination, leakage, efflorescence and so on. Some of these defects are caused by water which seeps through pavements and trapped between pavements and deck slabs. For durability of reinforced concrete deck slabs and pavements, it is very important to protect deck slabs and drain the trapped water out. To develop the trapped water drainage system, the following studies have been performed in Korea Highway Cooperation: related researches are reviewed; for six bridges, deck slabs are thoroughly investigated; new system to effectively drain the trapped water out is proposed; the proposed system is installed and evaluated. The proposed system is proved to be effective to drain the trapped water out and is expected to increase the durability of reinforced concrete deck slabs.

  • The stiffness of pavement is scarcely considered in structural analysis of the superstructure bridge. It will be reasonable in the case of asphalt concrete pavement over concrete deck plate because stiffness of the pavement compared with concrete deck plate can be ignored. Additionally, it is considered correct to do a design with a safety. However, various pavement materials which have even value reaching to the elastic modulus of concrete are applied to the orthotropic steel deck plate which has a relatively less stiffness comparing with the concrete deck plate. In this paper, the steel plate deck of the bridge of real project was modeled considering the pavement stiffness for the FEM analysis and the linear elastic analysis was performed. It was assumed to be perfectly bonded between the steel plate deck and the pavement and the temperature effect was ignored. It was analyzed on the vertical deflection of steel deck plate influencing to the serviceability of pavement and the bending stress of steel deck plate related to the fatigue life. As a result, It was indicated that the structural behavior of the orthotropic steel deck plate could be affected by the stiffness of pavement in some cases.

  • The interference between the lattice bar of existing LB-DECK and the bars placed at site degrades the constructability, which is pointed as a problem. HB-DECK simplified the shape of lattice bar, and converted the direction of main rebar direction to the distributing bar direction, and installed the rib on the underside of HB-DECK to increase the stiffness. The purpose of this study is to verify the structural performance of HB-DECK and cast in place concrete slab. The static load test was conducted to verify the structural performance according to Korean highway bridge design code(2015) and composite behavior of HB-DECK with Cast in Place Concrete Slab. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was carried by MIDAS FEA, and analyzed to compare the result of analysis and experiment. At a result, composite behavior was examined between HB-DECK and cast in place concrete slab, and structural performance satisfied Korean highway bridge design code(2015).

  • Bridges are structures where safety must be ensured. Generally, the destruction mechanism of bridge deck shows punching shear. Lately, the high-strength concrete is often used to increase the lifespan of bridges. The benefits of using the high-strength concrete are that it increases the durability and strength. On the contrary, it reduces the cross-section of the bridges. This study suggested the optimal thickness of bridge deck with application of high-strength concrete and the study evaluated its structural performance experimentally. The evaluation result shows that 180 mm and 190 mm of thickness are optimal for 100 MPa and 120 MPa high-strength concrete bridge deck respectively.

  • Traffic flow capacity of some old road bridges is insufficient due to limited deck width. In such cases bridge deck widening is a common solution. For multi-girder reinforced concrete (RC) bridges it is possible to add steel-concrete composite girders as the new outermost girders. The deck widening may be combined with bridge strengthening thanks to thickening of the existing deck slab. Joint action of the existing and the added parts of such bridge span must be ensured. It refers especially to the horizontal plane at the interface of the existing slab and the added concrete layer as well as to the vertical planes at the external surfaces of the initially outermost girders where the added girders are connected to the existing bridge span. Since the distribution of the added concrete is non-uniform in the span cross-section the structure is particularly sensitive to the added concrete shrinkage. The shrinkage induces shear forces in the aforementioned planes. Widening of a 12 m long RC multi-girder bridge span is numerically analysed to assess the influence of the added concrete shrinkage. The analysis results show that: a) in the vertical plane of the connection of the added and the existing deck slab the longitudinal shear due to the shrinkage of the added concrete is comparable with the effect of live load, b) it is necessary to provide appropriate longitudinal reinforcement in the deck slab over the added girders due to tension induced by the shrinkage of the added concrete.

  • This paper presents a experimental structural performance of steel-concrete hybrid bridge deck, which has studs to connect steel plate and concrete and T beam to improve structural performance, by steel plate shape, studs and load location. It proved that steel-concrete hybrid deck has a high structural performance and lightweight due to the efficient use of steel plate as a structural member, which has only used as formwork. In failure mode, few specimen failed at punching shear and many specimen at concrete crushing, therefore proved it has sufficient stability to punching shear which is the most frequent damage of bridge deck. Steel-concrete hybrid deck of plane steel plate has a high structural performance, and that of corrugated steel plate has a high reduction of weight.
