The most agricultural concrete structures for the irrigation and drainage are exposed to the underwater condition at the irrigation period and they take the influence on very severe cold in the winter. Therefore, it is impossible to use repair materials used to the general concrete structures. The research need the development of the repair material for a performance enhance of the agricultural underwater concrete structures. This research evaluated the mechanical and durability performance of the latex modified repair mortar for underwater concrete structures which peformed the repair in the underwater according to the characteristic of the agricultural concrete structure. The latex modified repair mortar is a material that minimize the effect of the ecosystem, environment and the segregation. In this research, the construction condition of the latex modified repair mortar for agricultural concrete structures was considered and the test specimens made in the underwater condition. Test results was then compared with target performance and commercial repair mortar. Experimental test results indicated that the mechanical and durability performance of latex modified repair mortar for agricultural underwater concrete structure satisfied all target performance. Also, the latex modified repair mortar resulted in better repair performance than the commercial repair mortar.
The deterioration rate of concrete structures in urban area is accelerated due to rapid urbanization and environmental pollution. Repair materials and methods newly introduced in Korea should be investigated whether they are appropriate for the urban environment in Korea. The creek concrete structures are exposed in severe environmental condition than others. Based on these background in mind, the study is focused on evaluation of performance on repair materials used to rehabilitate creek concrete structures. To evaluate the performance of repair materials, four kinds of repair materials were selected based on polymer emulsion. This experimental study was conducted on fundamental performance such as setting time, compressive strength, bending strength, bonding strength, thermal expansion coefficient, and durability performance such as chloride diffusion, carbonation, chemical attack, and steel corrosion rate. On the basis of this study, the optimal repair material which is proper to the environment condition can be selected and service life of creek concrete structures can be extended. As a result, the life cycle cost can be reduced and the waste of material resources will be cut down.
Repair of concrete structures has been a focus of attention in recent years not only in Japan but also worldwide. Concrete structures have fallen short of expectations at the time of construction-they should have been perpetual and maintenance-free. However, investigation into their premature deterioration reveals the primary causes: Concrete was made using inadequate materials and/or inadequate mixture proportions due to insufficient consideration and was placed inadequately under insufficient execution control. The secondary causes include insufficient consideration at the time of construction for the environmental conditions to which the structures were to be exposed. In any event, in the current economic climate, structures cannot be demolished and rebuilt as soon as they are damaged, but instead are expected to continue to be in service as long as possible with appropriate repair or retrofitting. This paper analyzes the causes of deterioration requiring repair and introduces relevant repair techniques. At the end, the repair project of the Sanyo Shinkansen Line in which the author was involved through committee activities is reported.
Recently, the damaged concrete structures are often strengthened or repaired using the polymer concrete or the polymer cement mortar. In the repaired concrete structures at early ages, internal stresses could be developed due to the differential drying shrinkage of the repair material. Due to the difference of the thermal coefficients of the repair material and existing concrete, additional stresses also could be developed as the structures are subjected to the ambient temperature changes. Theses environmentally-induced stresses can sometimes be large enough to cause damage to the structures, such as debonding of the interface between the two materials. In this study, a rational procedure was developed where anchors can be designed and installed to prevent damages in such structures by thermally-induced stresses. Finally, through the experimental and numerical study, the effects of the repair method using anchors with debonding was investigated and discussed the results.
The service life of agricultural concrete structures is designed in about 30 to 100 years, but actual service lift is estimated in an average 18 years. Therefore, as the service life of the agricultural concrete structures increases, necessity of repair by aging from various environment condition exposure increases. This study was to determinate the optimum mix proportion of latex modified repair mortar and to improve the durability performance of agricultural concrete structures. The physical and mechanical tests of latex modified repair mortar were performed. Tests of flow, compressive strength, flexural strength and bond strength tests were conducted. Test results show that the optimum nex proportion of latex modified repair mortar, when used in 5% latex volume fraction (weight of cement), 1.5% antifoaming agent (weight of latex), 0.2% PVA fiber volume fraction, 1:2 (binder-sand ratio), 10% silica fume replacement ratio (weight of cement), could result in best performance for the repair of agricultural concrete structures.
This research was to evaluate the shrinkage and durability performance of latex modified repair mortar and to improve the service lift of the agricultural concrete structures. The shrinkage characteristics of the repair material creates the delamination of repair materials and existing concrete. It may reduce the service life of structures. Also the reduction of durability performance of the repair materials induces the destruction of the repaired concrete structures at early stage. In this research, plastic and drying shrinkage, thermal expansion coefficient for shrinkage properties, durability performance, permeability, repeated freezing and thawing, and resistance of chemical solution test were performed. Test results showed that the latex modified repair mortar indicated the shrinkage amount which the delamination does not happen, and the latex modified repair mortar appeared excellent long-term durability performance which can increase the service life.
Civil engineering infrastructure is aging and requires cost-effective maintenance strategies to enable infrastructure systems operate reliably and sustainably. This paper presents an approach for determining risk-cost balanced repair strategy of corrosion damaged reinforced concrete structures with consideration of uncertainty in structural resistance deterioration. On the basis of analytical models of cover concrete cracking evolution and bond strength degradation due to reinforcement corrosion, the effect of reinforcement corrosion on residual load carrying capacity of corroded reinforced concrete structures is investigated. A stochastic deterioration model based on gamma process is adopted to evaluate the probability of failure of structural bearing capacity over the lifetime. Optimal repair planning and maintenance strategies during the service life are determined by balancing the cost for maintenance and the risk of structural failure. The method proposed in this study is then demonstrated by numerical investigations for a concrete structure subjected to reinforcement corrosion. The obtained results show that the proposed method can provide a risk cost optimised repair schedule during the service life of corroded concrete structures.
In many case, reinforced concrete structures are deteriorated by construction errors, design errors, settlement and movement, and weathering. The diagnose and repair of concrete deterioration is important for effective management of concrete structures. This manual is to provides guideline on evaluating the deterioration of the concrete in a structure and selecting an appropriate repair material and method.
Currently, there are no specific repair methods for RC structures damaged by fire, and repair methods are applied when durability deteriorates due to aging. In addition, a number of recent studies have been reported that have conducted fire resistance assessment of the repair materials themselves, assuming exposure to high-temperature environments such as fires. However, researches that evaluate the fire resistance performance of the repair materials by applying existing repair materials to the actual fire damaged reinforced concrete structures are very rare. Therefore, in this study, a number of existing repair materials were applied to fire-damaged concrete column to compare and evaluate the fire resistance performance with the original cover concrete.
A series of 15 reinforced concrete beams was tested to explore the effects of polymer repair on damaged beams. The key parameters for this study were the repair materials, repair methods, repair depths and repair locations. The repaired specimens failed by a typical flexural mode, showing minor interface failure. The results show that epoxy, polyester resins and latex modified cementitous mortars are effective for repairing the concrete beams. The results also show that the depth and the location of the repair do not change significantly the flexural preformance of the repaired beams.
