  • A model test is carried out to investigate the vibration of truss type lift gate in the four major rivers project. The gate model scaled with the ratio of 1 : 25 is made of acryl panel dimensioned 1.6 m in width, 0.28 m in height in the concrete test flume. Firstly natural frequencies of the model gate are measured and the results are compared with the numerical results in order to verify the model. The amplitudes of the vibration are measured under the different gate opening and water level conditions. The results are analyzed to study the characteristics of the gate vibration according to the small gate opening, the large gate opening and the overflow conditions. These test results presents a basic data for the guide manuals of gate management and a design method to reduce the gate vibration of truss type lift gate. Finally, the vibration of truss type lift gate are assessed in comparison with those of formerly tainter gate.

  • Tianjin Goldin Finance 117 tower has an architectural height of 597 m, total of 117 stories, and the coronation of having the highest structural roof of all the buildings under construction in China. Structural height-width ratio is approximately 9.5, exceeding the existing regulation code significantly. In order to satisfy earthquake and wind-resisting requirements, a structure consisting of a perimeter frame composed of mega composite columns, mega braces and transfer trusses and reinforced concrete core containing composite steel plate wall is adopted. Complemented by some of the new requirements from the latest Chinese building seismic design codes, design of the super high-rise building in high-intensity seismic area exhibits a number of new features and solutions to professional requirements in response spectrum selection, overall stiffness control, material and component type selection, seismic performance based design, mega-column design, anti-collapse and stability analysis as well as elastic-plastic time-history analysis. Furthermore, under the prerequisite of economic viability and a series of technical requirements prescribed by the expert review panel for high-rise buildings exceeding code limits, the design manages to overcome various structural challenges and realizes the intentions of the architect and the client.

  • Purpose: The purpose was to develop a preliminary scale to measure Korean adolescents' health behaviors through a qualitative approach, to evaluate the scale psychometrically, and to develop a final scale. Methods: Participants were 61 adolescents for qualitative interviews and 1,687 adolescents for the psychometric evaluation. Procedure included content analysis of interviews to identify health behavior categories for Korean adolescents, pre-test to confirm that preliminary scale items were understandable, content validity by an expert panel, development of the web-based computer-assisted survey (CAS), and psychometric analysis to determine reliability and validity of the final scale. Results: A final scale was developed for both paper-and-pencil and CAS. It consisted of 14 health behaviors (72 items), including stress and mental health (10), sleep habits (5), dietary habits (12), weight control (4), physical activity (4), hygiene habits (5), tobacco use (5), substance use (2), alcohol consumption (4), safety (4), sexual behavior (9), computer use (3), health screening (4), and posture (1). Conclusion: The scale's strong points are: 1) Two thirds of the final scale items are Likert scale items, enabling calculation of a health behavior score. 2) The scale is appropriate to Korean culture. 3) The scale focuses on concrete health behaviors, not abstract concepts.

  • Numerical analysis was carried out in order to simulate the development of the large deformation that took place on the reinforced earth wall, a part of the Tottori expressway planned to pass Hyogo, Japan. Since this reinforced earth wall had experienced unexpected deformation of the wall during construction, the wall was re-constructed twice. However, the wall deformation showed no sign to cease even at the final stage of the construction. Countermeasures to re-stabilize the wall were demanded. In part I of this paper, it was manifested that subsidence of a 3-meter weak soil due to seepage flow was responsible for the large deformation. A part of concrete panel wall was severely damaged due to extremely large pulling force of geotextile induced by the hammock state. As for the countermeasures, "grouting with slag system" was applied to fill voids of the backfill, and also to prevent further development of settlement in the weak soil layer. "Ground anchor" was also considered to achieve the prescribed factor of safety.

  • Dynamic characteristic of lift gate supported by plane truss is studied by a model test scaled with the ratio of 1 : 31.25 in the four major rivers project. The vibrations of gate supported by the plane truss is assessed in comparison with those of gate supported by the space truss which was tested formerly. The gate model is made of acryl panel and calibrated by lead. A model test is conducted under the different gate opening and upstream water levels conditions in the concrete test flume dimensioned 1.6 m in width, 0.8 m in height and 24 m in length. In order to verify the model, natural frequencies of the model gate are measured, and compared with the numerical results. The vibrations of gate model supported by the plane truss in opening height of 1.0 cm~2.0 cm shows greater than one supported by the space truss. It is found that the gate model supported by the plane truss is less desirable than one supported by the space truss. thus, the latter type of gate model is requested to design.

  • REMICON(Ready Mixed Concrete), the most essential material of construction work, is produced from facility called "Batcher plant." In order to produce Remicon, Batcher Plant needs to be supplied with basic raw material such as ballast, sand, cement, admixture and water. In remicon industry, overland transport vehicles are used during the whole manufacturing process from producing to infilling at the construction site. Thus, the transportation cost sums up be to 20 percent of whole manufacturing cost and transport capacity and distance travelled have direct and major effect on manufacturing costs. This paper suggests a method to find optimal location of batcher plant using modified Steiner point, suggesting the most effective and flexible connection through among construction site, aggregate, cement and remicon producing plant. This paper also proposes reducing of transport cost at maximum 60% by calculation through optimized plant location. The modified Steiner point theory proposed in this paper also can be applied to optimal location of a $2^{ry}$ substation or MCC panel for minimizing of power loss, voltage drop, line distance and etc.

  • This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of the nonlinear modelling techniques available today for describing the structural behaviour of masonry infills and their interaction with frame structures subjected to in-plane loads. Following brief overviews on the behaviour of masonry-infilled frames and on the results of salient experimental tests, three modelling approaches are discussed in more detail: the micro, the meso and the macro approaches. The first model considers each of the infilled frame elements as separate: brick units, mortar, concrete and steel reinforcement; while the second approach treats the masonry infill as a continuum. The paper focuses on the third approach, which combines frame elements for the beams and columns with one or more equivalent struts for the infill panel. Due to its relative simplicity and computational speed, the macro model technique is more widely used today, though not all proposed models capture the main effects of the frame-infill interaction.

  • Construction industry is one of the largest markets for composite materials. Composite materials are mostly utilized as surface coatings or concrete reinforcements, and they can hardly be found as a load bearing member in buildings. The three-dimensional composite structures with considerable bending, compressive and shear strengths are capable to be used as construction load bearing members. However, these composites cannot compete with other materials due to higher manufacturing costs. If the cost issue is resolved or their excellent performance is taken into consideration to overcome disadvantages related to economic-competitive challenges, these 3D composites can significantly reduce the construction time and result in lighter and safer buildings. Sandwich composite panels reinforced with 3D woven glass fabrics are amongst composites with highest bending strength. The current study investigates the possibility of utilizing these composite materials to construct ceilings and their application as slabs. One-to-one scale experimental loading of these composite panels shows a remarkable bending strength. Simulation results using ABAQUS software, also indicate that theoretical predictions of bending behavior of these panels are in good agreement with the observed experimental results.
