Constructed wetland system which can be applied to the rural wastewater treatment system was examined by pilot plant in Kon-Kuk University. Hydraulic loading rate of wastewater was about 0.16m$^3$/m$^2$. day and theoretical detention time in the system was 1.38 days. The effluent of the septic tank for the school building was applied as inflow to the system. The influent concentration of DO was zero but effluent was up to 4.37mg/${\ell}$ which implies that oxygen was supplied enough from atmosphere by reaeration to support biological activity of the system. Average influent concentration of BOD was 104mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 24mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 76%. Average influent concentration of COD was 215mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 63mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 70 % . Average influent concentration of SS was 78mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 10mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 87%. Two components, BOD and SS, are regulated by law to keep maximum water quality standard of 80mg/${\ell}$ when daily outflow rate is less than 100$m^3$/day which is the case of most rural communities. Therefore, the results from the experiment showed that constructed wetland system can meet the water quality standard easily. Average influent concentration of total nitrogen was 165mg/lwhich is relatively higher than normal wastewater, and effluent was about 156mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of only 6%. Average influent concentration of total phosphorus was 41 mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 6mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 87%. Overall, constructed wetland system was thought to be effective to treat wastewater if nitrogen removal mechanism is improved. Considering low cost, less maintenance, and high treatability, this system can be a practical alternative for the wastewater treatment in rural area The experiment was performed during the summer and fall season, and treatment efficiency of the system is expected to decrease in low temperature. therefore, further study including temperature is required to evaluate feasibility of the system more in detail.
The decomposition of antibiotics (cefaclor) by gamma irradiation in aqueous solutions was experimentally evaluated. To obtain a mutual interaction between two factors (antibiotics concentrations and radiation doses) and to optimize these factors during the process, experimental design and statistical analysis were employed. The decomposition capability of the gamma radiation was also mathematically described as a function of cefaclor concentration and gamma-ray dose using the statistical analysis. The results showed that the cefaclor concentration ($X_1$) in the response $Y_1$ (Reduction of cefaclor concentration) and gamma-ray dose ($X_2$) in the response $Y_2$ (Removal efficiency (%) of cefaclor concentration) exhibited a significantly positive effect, whereas gamma-ray dose ($X_2$) in the response $Y_1$ showed a significantly negative effect. The estimated ridge of maximum responses and optimal conditions for $Y_1$:($X_1$,$X_2$)=(25 mg/L, 350 Gy) and $Y_2$:($X_1$,$X_2$)=(21 mg/L, 565 Gy) using canonical analysis were 4.37 mg/L of reduction of cefaclor concentration and 98.35% of removal efficiency of cefaclor concentration, respectively. The measurement values agreed well with the predicted ones, thereby confirming the suitability of the model for $Y_1$ and $Y_2$ and the success of the experimental design in optimizing the conditions of the gamma irradiation process.
To investigate the performance of VOC separation, composite hollow fiber membrane was prepared which composed of poly (ether imide) support prepared by phase separation method and poly (dimethylsiloxane) coating active layer. The performances of the membranes for the application of recovery process in terms of their morphology, gas permeance test for $N_2$ and $O_2$ gases. Durability against benzene, toluene and xylene was also investigated. And permeation test for multi-component VOCS through the membrane with different feed concentration and stage-cut were investigated. Permeance of PEI supported membrane and the membranes coated with PDMS decreased from 45,000 GPU to 63 GPU and 49,450 to 30 GPU for $N_2$ and $O_2$, respectively. Recovery efficiency and concentration of VOCs in permeate increased with decreasing stage-cut. VOCs concentration in permeate proportionally increased with increasing feed concentration but concentration ratio and recovery efficiency showed any noticeable changes with feed concentration change.

Pilot-scale experiments were performed for the treatment of bank filtrate contammg high manganese concentration around 2mg/L using rapid manganese sand filtration to investigate effects of oxidant dose and pH control on the removal efficiency of manganese. For theoretical dose ranges of oxidant (sodium hypochlorite) between 3 and 4mg/L, the manganese concentration of effluent was 0.57 mg/L, which corresponded to 72.5% removal and was higher than drinking water quality standards of 0.3mg/L. For excess dose ranges of oxidant between 4 and 8mg/L, the manganese concentration of effluent was reduced to 0.14mg/L, which corresponded to 94.5% removal, but the residual chlorine concentration was over 1.0mg/L. On the other hand, manganese removal efficiency drastically increased up to the value of 98.0%, which is equivalent to the effluent concentration of 0.03mg/L by controling pH to the range between 7 and 8 for the theoretical dose of oxidant. Consequently, these results indicated that appropriate dose of chemicals, such as oxidant and alkali, and continuous monitoring of manganese should be necessary to obtain efficient removal of manganese and to optimize the maintenance of treatment facilities for the treatment of bank filtrate with high concentration of manganese.

Sulfamate plating solution containing a small amount of chloride bath was fabricated to study the properties of the electrodeposited Ni thin films. Effects of the changes of current density and additive concentration on current efficiency, residual stress, surface morphology and microstructure of Ni thin films electrodeposited from Ni sulfamate-chloride baths were investigated. The current efficiency was measured to be more than about 95%, independent of the changes of current density and saccharin concentration in the baths. Residual stress of Ni thin film was appeared to be the compressive stress modes in the range of $5{\sim}30mA/cm^2$ current density. Maximum compressive stress was observed at the current density of $10mA/cm^2$. Compressive stress values of Ni thin/thick films were increased to be about -85~-100 MPa with increasing saccharin concentration from 0 to 0.0195 M(4 g/L). Surface morphology was changed from smooth to nodule surface appearance with increasing the current density. Smooth surface morphology of Ni thin films electrodeposited from the baths containing saccharin was observed, independent of the saccharin concentration. Ni thin/thick films consist of FCC(111), FCC(200), FCC(220), FCC(311) and FCC(222) peaks. It was revealed that the FCC(200) peak of Ni thin films is the preferred orientation in the range of $5{\sim}30mA/cm^2$ current density. The intensity of FCC(200) peak was gradually decreased and the intensity of FCC(111) peak was increased with increasing saccharin concentration in the baths.
Recently, various researches have been studied, such as water treatment, water reuse, and seawater desalination using CDI (Capacitive deionization) technology. Also, applications like MCDI (Membrane capacitive deionization), FCDI (Flow-capacitive deionization), and hybrid CDI have been actively studied. This study tried to investigate various factors by an experiment on the TDS (Total dissolved solids) removal characteristics using MCDI module in aqueous solution. As a result of the TDS concentration of feed water from 500 to 2,000 mg/L, the MCDI cell broke through faster when the higher TDS concentration. In the case of TDS concentration according to the various flow rate, 100 mL/min was stable. In addition, there was no significant difference in the desorption efficiency according to the TDS concentration and method of backwash water used for desorption. As a result of using concentrated water for desorption, stable adsorption efficiency was shown. In the case of the MCDI module, the ions of the bulk solution which is escaped from the MCDI cell to the spacer during the desorption process are more important than the concentration of ions during desorption. Therefore, the MCDI process can get a larger amount of treated water than the CDI process. Also, prepare a plan that can be operated insensitive to the TDS concentration of backwash water for desorption.

The aims of this study were to develop a milk protein-based probiotic delivery system using a modified rennet-induced gelation method and to determine how the skim milk powder concentration level and pH, which can affect the rennet-induced intra- and inter-molecular association of milk proteins, affect the physicochemical properties of the probiotic delivery systems, such as the particle size, size distribution, encapsulation efficiency, and viability of probiotics in simulated gastrointestinal tract. To prepare a milk protein-based delivery system, skim milk powder was used as a source of milk proteins with various concentration levels from 3 to 10% (w/w) and rennet was added to skim milk solutions followed by adjustment of pH from 5.4 or 6.2. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG was used as a probiotic culture. In confocal laser scanning microscopic images, globular particles with a size ranging from 10 ㎛ to 20 ㎛ were observed, indicating that milk protein-based probiotic delivery systems were successfully created. When the skim milk powder concentration was increased from 3 to 10% (w/w), the size of the delivery system was significantly (p < 0.05) increased from 27.5 to 44.4 ㎛, while a significant (p < 0.05) increase in size from 26.3 to 34.5 ㎛ was observed as the pH was increased from 5.4 to 6.4. An increase in skim milk powder concentration level and a decrease in pH led to a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the encapsulation efficiency of probiotics. The viability of probiotics in a simulated stomach condition was increased when probiotics were encapsulated in milk protein-based delivery systems. An increase in the skim milk powder concentration and a decrease in pH resulted in an increase in the viability of probiotics in simulated stomach conditions. It was concluded that the protein content by modulating skim milk powder concentration level and pH were the key manufacturing variables affecting the physicochemical properties of milk protein-based probiotic delivery systems.
Herein we present a tested aqueous based redox flow battery (RFB) that employs phosphomolybdic acid and ferrocyanide as the negative and positive active species in an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The different concentrations of NaOH solution, such as 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6 M, were prepared for checking the electrochemical properties and stability. The NaOH concentration as a supporting electrolyte in the negative species appears to play an important role in the electrochemical properties of phosphomolybdic acid. Moreover, the optimum value of the concentration is necessary for the best performance. The resistance of the electrolyte decreased with increasing the concentration up to 1.5 M and then increased to 1.6 M. Hence, the decrease in electrolyte resistance appears to greatly influence the energy efficiency, which is improved by increasing the concentration of NaOH. In addition, the 1.5 M NaOH solution appears to be the concentration required for optimum performance.

In this study, a new tunnel ventilation method with a high velocity air curtain flow has been investigated for improving the ventilation exhaust efficiency and removing air pollutants in subway tunnels. At upper or lower position right downstream of a main duct connected with a ventilation opening, air curtain flows were suppled into the main duct where the air flow velocity was in the range of 2~6 m/s. Exhaust efficiency was monitored for both cases with and without air curtain flow for different air velocities, locations and injection angles of the air curtain. Particulate matter concentrations (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1.0) were also checked at both the main duct and ventilation opening before and after supplying air curtain flows. Lower air velocity of the main duct flow, higher air velocity of the air curtain led to higher exhaust efficiency and the air curtain condition of 30..inclined injection toward the main flow showed the maximum exhaust efficiency. The exhaust efficiency of about 24% without the air curtain could be improved to about 34% after using the air curtain flow. PM concentration decreased at the main duct and increased at the ventilation opening after using the air curtain flow. Therefore, the suggested method to use air curtain flows in tunnels will be probably one of the promising tools to reduce air pollutants in subway tunnels.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to assess removal efficiency of non-point pollutants and applicability for non-point pollutant reduction facilities by conducting the demonstration project operation. METHODS : In order to analyze removal efficiency of non-point pollutants for facilities such as a grassed swale, a small constructed wetland, a free water surface wetland, a horizontal sub-surface flow wetland, and a sand filtration, the field data including specifications of facilities, rainfall, inflow and runoff rainfall effluent etc. was acquired after occurring rainfall events, and the acquired data was analyzed for removal efficiency rate to assess road non-point pollutants facilities using event mean concentration (EMC) and summation of load (SOL) methods. RESULTS : The results of analyzing rainfall effluent, non-point pollutant sources showed that total suspended solid (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chrome (Cr), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) can be removed through non-point pollutant reduction facilities by 60.3% ~ 100%. Especially removal efficiency of TSS, COD and BOD is relatively higher than removal efficiency of other non-point pollutant sources in all kind of non-point pollutant facilities. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the result of this study, even though natural type of non-point pollutant reduction facilities for roads occupy small areas comparing with drainage basin areas, most of non-point pollutant sources would be removed through the facilities.
