A smart meter is one of the core components in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) that is responsible for providing effective control and monitor of electrical energy consumptions. The multifunction tasks that a smart meter carries out such as facilitating two-way communication between utility providers and consumers, managing metering data, delivering anomalies reports, analyzing fault and power quality, simply show that there are huge amount of data exchange in smart metering networks (SMNs). These data are prone to security threats due to high dependability of SMNs on Internet-based communication, which is highly insecure. Therefore, there is a need to identify all possible security threats over this network and propose suitable countermeasures for securing the communication between smart meters and utility provider office. This paper studies the architecture of the smart grid communication networks, focuses on smart metering networks and discusses how such networks can be vulnerable to security attacks. This paper also presents current mechanisms that have been used to secure the smart metering networks from specific type of attacks in SMNs. Moreover, we highlight several open issues related to the security and privacy of SMNs which we anticipate could serve as baseline for future research directions.
The security threat types in underwater communication networks environment are almost the same as the terrestrial, but the security of mechanisms the terrestrial RF-based networks environment can not be directly applied due to not only the limited resources of each node but also unsafe channel such as low propagation delay, high bit error rate etc. Nevertheless there has not been much research on the security of underwater acoustic communication networks. Therefore, in this paper analyzes the differences between the terrestrial communication networks and underwater acoustic communication networks, and identifies issues that are the starting points of underwater communication networks security research.

The easy scalability and low cost of range-free localization algorithms have led to their wide attention and application in node localization of wireless sensor networks. However, the existing range-free localization algorithms still have problems, such as large cumulative errors and poor localization performance. To solve these problems, an incremental strategy-based residual regression network is proposed for node localization in wireless sensor networks. The algorithm predicts the coordinates of the nodes to be solved by building a deep learning model and fine-tunes the prediction results by regression based on the intersection of the communication range between the predicted and real coordinates and the loss function, which improves the localization performance of the algorithm. Moreover, a correction scheme is proposed to correct the augmented data in the incremental strategy, which reduces the cumulative error generated during the algorithm localization. The analysis through simulation experiments demonstrates that our proposed algorithm has strong robustness and has obvious advantages in localization performance compared with other algorithms.

One of the most significant issues in combinatorial optimization is the classical NP-complete conundrum known as the 0/1 Knapsack Problem. This study delves deeply into the investigation of practical solutions, emphasizing two classic algorithmic paradigms, brute force, and dynamic programming, along with the metaheuristic and nature-inspired family algorithm known as the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The research begins with a thorough analysis of the dynamic programming technique, utilizing its ability to handle overlapping subproblems and an ideal substructure. We evaluate the benefits of dynamic programming in the context of the 0/1 Knapsack Problem by carefully dissecting its nuances in contrast to GA. Simultaneously, the study examines the brute force algorithm, a simple yet comprehensive method compared to Branch & Bound. This strategy entails investigating every potential combination, offering a starting point for comparison with more advanced techniques. The paper explores the computational complexity of the brute force approach, highlighting its limitations and usefulness in resolving the 0/1 Knapsack Problem in contrast to the set above of algorithms.

To initialize and maintain self-organizing networks such as mobile ad hoc networks, address allocation protocol is essentially required. However, centralized approaches that pervasively used in traditional networks are not recommended in this kind of networks since they cannot handle with mobility efficiently. In addition, previous distributed approaches suffer from inefficiency with control overhead caused by duplicated address detection and management of available address pool. In this paper, we propose a new dynamic address allocation scheme, which is based on adaptive partition. An available address is managed in distributed way by multiple agents and partitioned adaptively according to current network environments. Finally, simulation results reveal that a proposed scheme is superior to previous approach in term of address acquisition delay under diverse simulation scenarios.

Recently, various in-vehicle networks have been developed respectively in order to accomplish their own purpose such as CAN and MOST. Various electronic devices for vehicle are controllable by the advent of networks attached to the vehicle. However, the networks also come with a variety of unique features in each network-specific communication which creates difficulty using and supporting the interoperable services among the networks. To solve this problem, each network needs a standard integration framework. In this paper, a framework is proposed and implemented. It consists of a standard protocol using XML to improve compatibility and portability. The framework makes each network interoperable by applying unique information and messages of the network in the XML standard document. The results obtained by implementation show that the framework supports the efficient communication of data between heterogeneous invehicle networks.

The recent increase in use of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard for wireless connectivity in personal area networks makes of it an important technology for low-cost low-power wireless personal area networks. Studies showed that voice communications over IEEE 802.15.4 networks is feasible by Guaranteed Time Slot (GTS) allocation; but there are some constraints to accommodate voice transmission beyond two hops due to the excessive transmission delay. In this paper, we propose a GTS allocation scheme for bidirectional voice traffic in IEEE 802.15.4 multihop networks with the goal of achieving fairness and optimization of resource allocation. The proposed scheme uses a greedy algorithm to allocate GTSs to devices for successful completion of voice transmission with efficient use of bandwidth while considering closest devices with another factor for starvation avoidance. We analyze and validate the proposed scheme in terms of fairness and resource optimization through numeral analysis.

Mobile multi-robot teams are useful in many critical applications such as search and rescue. Explicit communication among robots in such mobile multi-robot teams is useful for the coordination of such teams as well as exchanging data. Since many applications for mobile robots involve scenarios in which communication infrastructure may be damaged or unavailable, mobile robot teams frequently need to communicate with each other via ad hoc networking. In such scenarios, low-overhead and energy-efficient routing protocols for delivering messages among robots are a key requirement. Two important primitives for communication are essential for enabling a wide variety of mobile robot applications. First, unicast communication (between two robots) needs to be provided to enable coordination and data exchange. Second, in many applications, group communication is required for flexible control, organization, and management of the mobile robots. Multicast provides a bandwidth-efficient communication method between a source and a group of robots. In this paper, we first propose and evaluate two unicast routing protocols tailored for use in ad hoc networks formed by mobile multi-robot teams: Mobile robot distance vector (MRDV) and mobile robot source routing (MRSR). Both protocols exploit the unique mobility characteristics of mobile robot networks to perform efficient routing. Our simulation study show that both MRDV and MRSR incur lower overhead while operating in mobile robot networks when compared to traditional mobile ad hoc network routing protocols such as DSR and AODV. We then propose and evaluate an efficient multicast protocol mobile robot mesh multicast (MRMM) for deployment in mobile robot networks. MRMM exploits the fact that mobile robots know what velocity they are instructed to move at and for what distance in building a long lifetime sparse mesh for group communication that is more efficient. Our results show that MRMM provides an efficient group communication mechanism that can potentially be used in many mobile robot application scenarios.

Recent research work has unearthed that multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks offer considerable capacity gains over single-radio wireless mesh networks. In this paper, we present a new routing metric for multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks. The goal of the metric is to choose multiple link/node disjoint paths between a source and destination node that, when used concomitantly, impart high end-to-end throughput. The proposed metric selects high fidelity paths that will produce elevated throughput with maximum fault tolerance.

Directional sensor networks (DSNs) can significantly improve the performance of a network by employing energy efficient communication protocols. Neighbor discovery is a vital part of medium access control (MAC) and routing protocol, which influences the establishment of communication between neighboring nodes. Neighbor discovery is a challenging task in DSNs due to the limited coverage provided by directional antennas. Furthermore, in these networks, communication can only take place when the beams of the directional antennas are pointed toward each other. In this article, we propose a novel multiple token-based neighbor discovery (MuND) protocol, in which multiple tokens are transmitted based on an area exploration algorithm. The performance of the protocol is evaluated using the Cooja simulator. The simulation results reveal that the proposed MuND protocol achieves lower neighbor discovery latency, with a 100% neighbor discovery ratio, and has a relatively low communication overhead and low energy consumption.
