This purpose of this study was to describe and compare the radiographic and computed tomographic(CT) appearance of the experimentally induced Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease(LCPD) in dogs. LCPD was experimentally induced at the left femoral head in 7 litters of a dog. The lesions were evaluated with radiography, CT, and contrast CT every week from day 7 to day 70 after operation. Histopathologic examination was performed on 92th day after operation. Every images were evaluated according to the staging system of the osteonecrosis published by Association Research of Circulation Osseous in 1997 and the scoring(0-4). On CT scan, diffuse porotic lesion and focal sclerotic lesion were detected on day 14 and on day 21 after operation, respectively. Subchondral fracture, articular collapse and crescent sign with decreased attenuation were shown on day 28 after operation for the first time and no change of the sign were detected from operation day 9 to day 70 after operation. Focal porotic lesion and irregular radiopacity of femoral head were detected on day $41{\pm}7.48$ and on day $51{\pm}5.29$ after operation respectively on radiographs. In scoring evaluation, 2.00 was scored on day 14 after operation on CT scan, on day 56 after operation on radiographs, respectively This study has shown that CT is more suitable for early diagnosis of LCPB and has superior sensitivity than radiography. Also, CT has been expected to be important for staging and treatment of LCPD.
Study design : A retrospective study of lumbar disc herniations using results of follow-up computed tomographic scan examinations. Objective : Lumbar disc herniations is one of the cause low back pain and lower extremity pain. To clarify the lumbar disc herniations morphological changes over time(mean 5.3 years) in order to establish a strategy for treatment. Methods : Sixteen patients with lumbar disc herniations who underwent follow-up computed tomographic scan examinations were studied. The changes over time in herniated disc size(herniation ratio) were evaluated using this scan technique. The initial computed tomographic scan allowed classification of the herniations according to herniation ratio: small, medium and large. Results : Comparison with follow-up computed tomographic scans showed that of the 16 patients, in 14 patients(88%), the herniation ratio(HR) was decreased and among them, 8 patients had complet resolution of herniated disc. In 2 patients with small herniations, the HR of one case was increased, the other was decreased. In 8 patients with medium herniations, the HR of one case had no change, the others was decreased. In 6 patients with large herniation, the HR of all patients was decreased. Interestingly, 4 of the 16 patients showed calcification change of herniated disc. Conclusion : There is no doubt that herniated disc size is decreased over time. The largest herniations were those which had the greatest tendency to decrease in size. But in some cases, the HR was increased, or calcification change was showed.

Purpose Surgical correction of various occular problems which do not have visual problem in plastic surgical area is to normalize the appearance of the face by restoring the normal position of orbit and eyeball. With development of surgical technique, the orbit can be restored exactly in trauma patient and can be moved totally in hypertelorism, as an example of congenital disease. All these surgeries are based on the hypothesis that the position of oclular glove moves in the plane in a quantitatively predictable reationship to osseous orbit movement. However, no studies have critically evaluated between the change of periorbital soft tissue and the outcome of the surgical correction, because there is no method of objective, quantitave evaluation of the periorbital soft tissue. Method Author suggest the methodology for quantitative assessment of ocular and periocular fat changes using the manipulation of digital images of computed tomographic scan. Results The method was allowed to evaluate inter-dacryon distance, inter-centroid distance, movement of the medial orbital wall, movement of the lateral orbital wall, alteration of thickness of the lateral periorbital fat as indicator of movement of the orbital wall and orbit in the patient with congenital periorbital anomaly and postoperative periorbital surgery. This study was performed to examine the visualization and anatomical variants of the hepatic artery with dual-phase computed tomography (CT) angiography and three-dimensional volume rendering imaging analysis in clinically normal dogs. Seven healthy beagle dogs were enrolled and underwent dual CT angiography. Arterial phase images could be obtained with multi-detector CT angiography using the fixed-scan method in these dogs. Contrast enhancement of the hepatic parenchyma was quite minimal because of the unique blood supply system of the liver. In most dogs, the main hepatic arterial branches were the right lateral branch, left branch, and right medial branch. Although hepatic arterial variation appears to be common in dogs, only one dog in this study had the caudate lobar branch as the first branch of the hepatic artery. Further study on a larger number of dogs with CT images will be needed to identify and classify the pattern of hepatic arterial variations.

Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomographic Scoring (ASPECTS) is a 10-point CT-scan score designed to quantify early ischemic changes in patients with acute ischemic stroke. However, an assessment of ASPECTS remains a challenge for neuroradiologists in stroke centers. The purpose of this study is to develop an automated ASPECTS scoring system that provides decision-making support by utilizing binary classification with three-dimensional convolutional neural network to analyze CT images. The proposed method consists of three main steps: slice filtering, contrast enhancement and image classification. The experiments show that the obtained results are very promising.
Background: Information regarding the incidence and risk factors for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) detected by follow-up computed tomographic (CT) venography after pulmonary embolism (PE) is sparse. The aim of the present study was to identify the predictors of DVT in follow-up CT images, and to elucidate their clinical significance. Methods: Patients with PE were classified into the following three cohorts based on the time of indirect CT venography follow-up: within 1 month, 1 to 3 months, and 3 to 9 months after the initial CT scan. Each cohort was subdivided into patients with or without DVT detected by follow-up CT. Clinical variables were compared between the two groups. Results: Follow-up CT revealed DVT in 61% of patients with PE within 1 month, in 15% of patients with PE at 1 to 3 months, and in 9% of patients with PE at 3 to 9 months after the initial CT scan. Right ventricular (RV) dilation on the initial CT (odds ratio [OR], 8.30; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.89-36.40; p=0.005) and proximal DVT at the initial presentation (OR, 6.93; 95% CI, 1.90-25.20; p=0.003) were found to independently predict DVT in follow-up CT images within 1 month, proximal DVT at the initial presentation was found to independently predict DVT in follow-up CT images at 1 to 3 months (OR, 6.69; 95% CI, 1.53-29.23; p=0.012), and central PE was found to independently predict DVT in follow-up CT images at 3 to 9 months (OR, 4.25; 95% CI, 1.22-4.83; p=0.023) after the initial CT scan. Furthermore, the detection of DVT by follow-up CT independently predicted the recurrence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) (OR, 4.67; 95% CI, 2.24-9.74; p<0.001). Conclusion: Three months after PE, DVT was not detected by follow-up CT in most patients with PE. RV dilation on the initial CT, central PE, and proximal DVT at the initial presentation were found to predict DVT on follow-up CT, which might predict VTE recurrence.

As an advancement of medical imaging modalities and analyzing software with multi-function, active researches to acquire high contrast and high resolution image being done. In recently, development of medical imaging modalities like as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is aiming to display anatomical structure more accuracy and faster. Thus, one of the important areas in CT today is the use of CT scanner for the quantitative evaluation of 3-D reconstruction images from 2-D tomographic images. In CT system, the effective slice thickness and the quality of 3-D reconstructed image will be influenced by imaging acquisition parameters (e.g. pitch and scan mode). In diagnosis and surgical planning, the accurate distance measurements of 3-D anatomical structures play an important role and the accuracy of distance measurements will depend on the acquisition parameters such as slice thickness, pitch, and scan mode. The skull phantom was scanned with SDCT for various acquisition parameters and acquisition slice thicknesses were 3 and 5 mm, and reconstruction intervals were 1, 2, and 3 mm to each pitch. 3-D visualizations and distance measurements were performed with PC based 3-D rendering and analyzing software. Results showed that the image quality and the measurement accuracy of 3-D SDCT images are independent to the reconstruction intervals and pitches.
Background: Age-related changes have been studied for lower and middle facial bones. Although the forehead comprises one-third of the facial area, no studies have investigated age-related changes in the upper part of the face or forehead. The purpose of this study was to use three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) to investigate age-related changes in the frontal bone. Methods: A retrospective review was performed for patients who underwent 3D CT scan of facial bones. Patients were divided by gender and age (20 to 40 years, 41 to 60 years, and above 60 years). The frontal bone curvature was evaluated by the length of frontal bone and by two frontal bone angles in relation to the Frankfurt horizon. Results: In both genders, aging was associated with increasing lower slope length. In elderly men (>60 years), the upper slope angle was significantly higher when compared to younger male subjects. Women demonstrated similar age-related changes, but the differences were only statistically significant for the middle and older age groups. Conclusion: This study demonstrates quantifiable age-related changes in the frontal bone. These findings contribute to the understanding of age-related changes of the facial soft tissues. The mean measurements in each age group can be used as a reference when planning forehead reconstruction.

Orbital blowout fractures are common consequence to blunt periorbital trauma. Pure orbital blowout fractures first occur at the weakest point of the orbital wall. Computed tomography(CT) is recognized to be the best imaging technique to evaluate orbital fractures. The extent and location of a blowout fractures in the CT scan were noted to have an effect on the clinical outcome. In the early posttraumatic period, the presence of significant enophthalmos is difficult to detect because of orbital edema. Early surgical intervention may improve the ultimate outcome because open reconstruction becomes more difficult if surgery is delayed. In this study, we evaluated isolated blowout fractures of the orbital floor by region-of-interest measurements from CT scans and their relationship to ophthalmologic findings. Six patients of the medial orbital wall fractures, eleven patients of the inferior orbital wall fractures, nineteen of the medial and the inferior orbital wall fractures confirmed by CT scan, were evaluated. The area of fracture and the volume of the displaced orbital tissue were determined from CT scan using linear measurements. Each of the calculated values for the area and the volume were compared with the degree of the enophthalmos, the diplopia, and the eyeball movement limitation to determine whether there was any significant relationship between them. The fracture area and the volume of the herniated orbital tissue were significantly positively correlated with the enophthalmos and the ocular motility limitation and not correlated with the diplopia. For the enophthalmos of 2mm or greater, the mean fracture area was 3.55{\pm}1.25cm^2$ and the volume of the herniated orbital tissue was $1.74{\pm}0.97cm^3$; for less than 2mm enophthalmos, $1.43{\pm}0.99cm^3$ and $0.52{\pm}0.49cm^3$, respectively. The enophthalmos of 2mm can be expected with $2.92cm^2$ of the fracture area and $1.40cm^3$ of the herniated orbital tissue. In conclusion, the enophthalmos of 2mm or more, which is a frequent indication for surgery. It can be expected when area of fracture is $2.92cm^2$ or more, or the volume of herniated orbital tissue is $1.40cm^3$ or more. And the CT scan using linear measurements has an application in the assessment of patients with blowout fractures and provides useful information in the posttraumatic evaluation of orbital fractures.
A 2-year-old castrated male, Cocker spaniel dog with a history of chronic productive cough for 2 to 3 months and with unsuccessful treatment was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Seoul National University. On thoracic radiographs, there were alveolar infiltrations at left cranial and right caudal lung fields, and soft-tissue opacity round to oval images at overall lung field. The bronchi were dilated, tortuous and not tapered. Abnormal air was accumulated focally in the caudodorsal lung fields. To scrutinize the soft-tissue opacity image and accumulated air, computed tomography (CT) was done. On CT images, severe cylindrical or tubular bronchiectasis was confirmed. And the soft-tissue opacity images were found in the dilated bilated and thought to complexes of mucous plugs, inflammatory cells, necrotic and fibrotic tissue. The dog was dead next day to the CT scan, so necropsy and histopathologic examination were perfermed. On the histopathology, there were cylindrical bronhiectasis and severe diffuse chronic fibrinous necropurulent bronchitis and bronchopneumonia. In this case, it was difficult to diagnose the bronchiectasis only with radiography due to the concurrent lesions, such as pulmonary infiltrations and mucous plugs, which was identified by computed tomography. Thus, computed tomography is considered as a useful modality to confirm tile bronchiectasis camouflaged by the concurrent lesion.
