  • Aerodynamic characteristics of cross section shape is an important parameter for the wind response and structural stability of long span bridges. Numerical simulation methods have been introduced to estimate the aerodynamic characteristics for more detailed flow analysis and cost saving in place of existing wind tunnel experiment. In this study, the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation and large eddy simulation( LES) technique were used to estimate lift, drag and moment coefficients of four cross sections. The Strouhal numbers were also determined by the fast Fourier transform of time series of the lift coefficient. The values from simulations and references were in a good agreement with average difference of 16.7% in coefficients and 8.5% in the Strouhal numbers. The success of the simulations is expected to attribute to the practical use of numerical estimation in construction engineering and wind load analysis.

  • In this study, the conceptual design and performance evaluation of a personal air vehicle (PAV) is presented, which is a potential futuristic individual transportation. The blade element theory (BET) is employed to compute a rotational velocity. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is performed to investigate the difference in the thrust performance in the rotor axis distance of a quad-copter PAV in hovering. Modal analysis is performed to create a Campbell diagram to investigate critical speed. Consequently, a quad-copter PAV changes the aerodynamics thrust and critical velocity according to the rotor axis distance.

  • In a PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor), the appropriate heat removal from the surface of fuel rod bundle is important for ensuring thermal margins and safety. Although many CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software have been used to predict complex flows inside fuel assemblies with mixing vanes, there is no domestic regulatory guideline for the comprehensive evaluation of CFD software. Therefore, from the nuclear regulatory perspective, it is necessary to perform the systematic assessment and prepare the domestic regulatory guideline for checking whether valid CFD software is used for nuclear safety problems. In this study, to provide systematic evaluation and guidance on the applicability of CFD software to the domestic nuclear safety area, the results of the sensitivity analysis for the effect of the discretization scheme accuracy for the convection terms and turbulence models, which are main factors that contribute to the uncertainty in the calculation of the nuclear safety problems, on the prediction performance for the turbulent flow distribution inside the fuel assembly with split-type mixing vanes were explained.

  • This study was conducted to qualify the equality of the flow distribution from open channel between rapid mixing basin and flocculation basins in a domestic full-scale water treatment plant, and suggest a remedy for improving the equality. In order to evaluate the feasibility of the suggested remedy, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique are used, and for verifying the CFD simulation results wet tests were carried out for the pilot scale channel based on geometric similarity. From the results of CFD simulation and wet tests, it was investigated that the modification of hydraulic structure in the distribution channel, which is to install the longitudinal orifice baffle in flow direction, could improve the equality of the flow distribution. Also, in the case that Froude number is relatively small (Froude number <<0.03), the open ratio of orifices on the installed baffle hardly affects the equality of flow distribution.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of longitudinal baffle on hydrodynamic behavior within a certain full-scale sedimentation basin (flow rate per basin; 1,000m3/d). Comparative experimental investigations have been carried out on the sediment removal efficiencies and the sludge deposit distribution in the baffled and un-baffled sedimentation basin, respectively. From the results derived in the baffled and un-baffled sedimentation, the turbidity removal rate in the baffled sedimentation basin is about 38% higher than that in un-baffled. Also, the height of sludge deposit in the baffled sedimentation basin is approximately 20% lower, and the sludge concentration is 10% higher than those in un-baffled sedimentation basin. In order to explain the experimental results and investigate the effect of longitudinal baffle in more detail, we conducted Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. From the results of CFD simulation, the flow, especially in the near of outlet orifice, was more stable in the case of longitudinal baffled sedimentation basin than that in un-baffled basin. Also, it could be concluded that the longitudinal baffle made a fully developed flow more effective for sedimentation.

  • The fluctuation of inlet flow to a water treatment plant makes a serious problem that it can change the outlet flowrate from each process abruptly. Since it takes very short time for the surface wave occurred from the fluctuation of inlet flow to reach the latter processes, it is impossible for operators to cope with that stably. In order to investigate the characteristics of hydraulic behavior for rectangular sedimentation basin in water treatment plant, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation were employed. From the results of both CFD simulations, it was confirmed that time taken for the follow-up processes by the fluctuation in intake well can be estimated by the propagation velocity of surface waves. Also, it takes very short time for the surface wave occurred from the fluctuation of inlet flow to reach the latter processes. In the case of inlet flowerate being increased sharply, local velocity within sedimentation basin appeared as wave pattern and increased due to convection current. Also, it could be observed that vortex made local velocity in the vicinity of bottom rise.

  • Hydraulic efficiency was a vital component in evaluating the disinfection capability of clearwell. Current practice evaluates these system based on the tracer test only. In this paper, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) was applied on the clearwell for alternating or supplementing the tracer test. The baffle factor derived from the CFD modeling closely matched the values obtained from full scale tracer testing. And, for suggesting proper numerical model in clearwell; the turbulence model, discretization scheme, convergence criteria were investigated through separate simulation runs. The model validation was conducted by comparing the simulated data with experimental data. In the turbulence model, the realizable κε model and the standard κε model were found to be more appropriate than RNG κε model. The residuals of convergence criteria should be used as not 103 but 104 or 105. In discretization scheme, the difference of simulated values in 1st, 2nd, 3rd upwind scheme was found to be insignificant. Moreover, the result of this study suggest that CFD modeling can be a reliable alternative to tracer testing for evaluating the hydraulic efficiency.

  • Several experimental and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods have been developed to analyze and describe macromixing processes in a rotating bar reactor (RBR). This review provides an overview of the measurement methods of macromixing and delivers an assessment based on the concentration field. The concentrations are directly used to define the intensity of segregation (Is), and can reflect macromixing in a rotating bar reactor. Additionally, shows the investigations of the techniques available for portraying the intensity of segregation. This research is organized into three primary sections. The initial two sections focus on the overarching trends associated with the implementation of Conductivity, Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence, and Electrical Resistance Tomography methods in RBR. An examination of the procedural steps, materials utilized, and the associated calculations was conducted. The final section addresses the simulation model of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), detailing the necessary parameters, including the equations employed, boundary conditions, and the calculation procedures for determining the intensity of segregation. Subsequently, the study elucidates the feasibility of employing CFD as a precise technique for evaluating macromixing. The experimental techniques available were reviewed and compared in terms of their advantages, disadvantages, characterization capabilities, and scope of application.

  • In this study, the removal efficiency of the wetland in terms of particulate matter and dead water zone through the application of baffles in the sedimentation were simulated with the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to determine the design of a cost-effective constructed wetland. As a result, it was analyzed that the application of the baffle in the sedimentation tank affect the flow and sedimentation rate. Fine particles such as 2μm and 5μm showed high sedimentation rate when the baffles are installed horizontally. large particles such as 10μm and 20μm showed also high deposition rate when the baffles are installed vertically. In addition, the vertical baffles is considered to be more efficient than other baffle types in terms of maintenance since the particulate matter are concentrated in narrow areas. Therefore, it is considered that the selection of the most applicable type of baffle depends on the design purpose of the wetland to be constructed.
