  • Flood routing in the Youngsan River was performed for the flood event of July, 1989 by two finite difference methods. The Saint Venant eq., a kind of hyperbolic partial differential equation is employed as governing equation and the explicit scheme (Leap Frog) and implicit scheme (Preissmann) are used to discretize the GE. As for the external boundary conditions, discharge and tidal elevation are upstream and downstream BC, respectively and estuary dam is included in internal BC. Lateral inflows and upstream discharges are the hourly results from storage function method, At Naju station, a Relatively upstream points in this river, the outputs are interpreted as good ones by comparing two numerical results of FDMs with the observed data and the calibrated results by storage function method. and two computational results are compared at the other sites, from middle stream and downstream points, and thus are considered reliable. Therefore, we can conclude from this research that these numerical models are adaptable in simulating and forecasting the flood in natural channels in Korea as well as existing hydrologic models. And the study about optimal gate control at the flood time is expected as further study using these models.

  • This paper investigates the indoor-air-quality (IAQ) characteristics of the interior space equipped with system air-conditioner. The behaviors of individual variables such as temperature, humidity and concentration of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) that influence on IAQ of the interior space were characterized under various cooling conditions by numerical and experimental studies. The numerical analysis predicting the temperature behavior of the interior space was conducted, and its results showed a good agreement with the experimental ones. The $CO_2$ concentration and humidity were measured and their time dependent behaviors were monitored and analyzed. From the results, it was found that there existed the differences of the time-dependent behaviors of IAQ variables according to the locations. In addition, it is demonstrated that the large discharge angle of $45^{\circ}$ made the temperature profile more irregular and the high discharge flow of 5.34 m/s produced similar temperature profiles at three different sensing locations. Finally, the humidity of interior space was less sensitive to the changes of the air cooling conditions than the case of temperature and the $CO_2$ concentration increase mainly depended on the number of individuals inside the space.

  • Motion perception has been tremendously improved in neuroscience and computer vision. The baseline motion perception model is mediated by the dorsal visual pathway involving the cortex areas the primary visual cortex (V1) and the middle temporal (V5 or MT) visual area. However, few works have been done on the extension of neural models to improve the efficacy and robustness of motion perception of real sequences. To overcome shortcomings in situations, such as varying illumination and large displacement, an adaptive V1-MT motion perception (Ad-V1MTMP) algorithm enriched to deal with real sequences is proposed and analyzed. First, the total variation semi-norm model based on Gabor functions (TV-Gabor) for structure-texture decomposition is performed to manage the illumination and color changes. And then, we study the impact of image local context, which is processed in extra-striate visual areas II (V2), on spatial motion integration by MT neurons, and propose a V1-V2 method to extract the image contrast information at a given location. Furthermore, we take feedback inputs from V2 into account during the polling stage. To use the algorithm on natural scenes, finally, multi-scale approach has been used to handle the frequency range, and adaptive pyramidal decomposition and decomposed spatio-temporal filters have been used to diminish computational cost. Theoretical analysis and experimental results suggest the new Ad-V1MTMP algorithm which mimics human primary motion pathway has universal, effective and robust performance.

  • This study aimed to predict the resistance and propulsion performance of a ship using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a database as well as establish an assessment method for the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) using the results. First, the total resistance of the studied ship is obtained using CFD. A flow analysis is conducted with the free surface and trim and sinkage using a commercial CFD code (STAR-CCM+). The effective power of the ship is assessed based on the CFD results. The quasi-propulsive efficiency is calculated from an empirical prediction equation using experimental data and similar material. Finally, a general calculation program for the EEDI is established based on the hydrodynamic results, ship information for principal particulars, conversion factor of $CO_2$ for fuels, and fuel consumption.

  • With the recent increase in international trade volume the trade volume through ships is also continuously increasing. The treatment of ballast water goes through the following five steps, samples are taken and analyzed at each step, and samples are obtained using a suction pump. These suction pumps have low efficiency and thus need to be improved. In this study, it is to optimize the form of the impeller which affects directly improvements of performance to determine the capacity of suction pump and to fulfill the purpose of this research. To do it, we have carried out parametric design as an input variable, geometric form for the impeller. By conducting the flow analysis for the optimum form, it has confirmed the value of improved results and achieved the purpose to study in this paper. It has selected the necessary parameter for optimizing the form of the pump impeller and analyzed the property using experiment design. And it can reduce the factor of parameter for local optimization from findings to analyze the property of form parameter. To perform MOGA(Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm) it has generated response surface using parameters for local optimization and conducts the optimization using multi-objective genetic algorithm. with created experiment cases, it has performed the computational fluid dynamics with model applying the optimized impeller form and checked that the capacity of the pump was improved. It could verify the validity concerning the improvement of pump efficiency, via optimization of pump impeller form which is suggested in this study.

  • When a ship with a planing line operates or turns in a straight line, the floating position and trim change according to the speed, and a large resistance is generated on the hull. In this paper, the resistance to a planing line was estimated through the computational fluid dynamics of a leisure boat with improved hull weight and durability by applying a carbon composite material to the hull. The resistance performance of the bow and stern of the 18ft class leisure boat was checked and the flow field of the entire vessel was estimated, and the stability of the planing line was confirmed by comparing the resistance of each trim through numerical analysis. In addition, it was confirmed that the designed planing line could withstand it sufficiently because the force applied to the hull was not large, and The stability of the boat was analyzed by calculating the wavelength of the wave and the length of the ship as the ratio of gravity to the inertial force and checking how much force the rolling occurred.

  • In cases of water pollution accidents, accurate prediction for arrival time and concentration of contaminants in a river is essential to take proper measures and minimize their impact on downstream water intake facilities. It is critical to fully understand the behavior characteristics of contaminants on river surface, especially in case of oil spill accidents. Therefore, in this study, the effects of main parameters of advection and diffusion of contaminants were analyzed and validated by comparing the results of Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT) simulation of Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code (EFDC) model with those of Global Position System (GPS)-equipped drifter experiment. Prevention scenario modeling was accomplished by taking cases of movable weir operation into account. The simulated water level and flow velocity fluctuations agreed well with observations. There was no significant difference in the speed of surface particle movement between 5 and 10 layer modeling. Therefore, 5 layer modeling could be chosen to reduce computational time. It was found that full three dimensional modeling simulated wind effects on surface particle movements more sensitively than depth-averaged two dimensional modeling. The diffusion range of particles was linearly proportional to horizontal diffusivity by sensitivity analysis. Horizontal diffusivity estimated from the results of GPS-equipped drifter experiment was 0.096 m2/sec, which was considered to be valid for applying the LPT module in this area. Finally, the scenario analysis results showed that particle movements could be stagnant when discharge from the upstream weir was reduced, implying the possibility of securing time for mitigation actions such as oil boom installation and wiping oil contaminants. The outcomes of this study can help improve the prediction accuracy of particle tracking simulation to establish the most suitable mitigation plan considering the combination of movable weir operation.

  • The fuel assembly for pressurized water reactor (PWR) consists of fuel rod bundle, spacer grid and bottom/top end fittings. The cooling water in high pressure and temperature is introduced in lower plenum of reactor core and directed to upper plenum through the subchannel which is formed between the fuel rods. The main thermal-hydraulic performance parameters for the PWR fuel are pressure drop and critical heat flux in normal operating condition, and quenching time in accident condition. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has been developing an advanced PWR fuel, dual-cooled annular fuel and accident tolerant fuel for the enhancement of fuel performance and the localization. For the key thermal-hydraulic technology development of PWR fuel, the KAERI LWR fuel team has conducted the experiments for pressure drop, turbulent flow mixing and heat transfer, critical heat flux(CHF) and quenching. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was also performed to predict flow and heat transfer in fuel assembly including the spent fuel assembly in dry cask for interim repository. In addition, the research cooperation with university and nuclear fuel company was also carried out to develop a basic thermal-hydraulic technology and the commercialization.

  • Lambda wing type Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle(UCAV) which adopts Blended Wing Body(BWB) has relatively less drag and more stealth performance than conventional aircraft. However, Pitching moment is rapidly increased at a specific angle of attack affected by leading edge vortex due to leading edge sweep angle. Wind tunnel testing and numerical analysis were carried out with UCAV 1303 configuration on condition of 50 m/s of flow velocity, $-4^{\circ}{\sim}28^{\circ}$ of the range of angle-of-attack. The effect of wing twist for longitudinal stability at the various angles of attack was verified in this study. When negative twist is applied on the wing, Pitch-break was onset at higher angle of attack due to delayed flow separation on outboard of the wing. On the other hand, pitch-break was onset at lower angle of attack and lift-to-drag ratio was increased when positive twist is applied on the wing.

  • This research was conducted to apply the QUAL2E model to be adopted to the Nam river under current water quality conditions. The survey area of total 60 Km was divided into five reaches. Each reach was then subdivided into the uniform computational elements of 1.5 Km. Based on the stream characteristics, nine sampling stations consisting of six at main streams and three at tributaries were selected. The field data were obtained from the selected stations twice during October of 1991 and May of 1992, which represented the cold weather and low flow, also the warm weather and low flow conditions, respectively. As the results of sensitivity analysis of the model, the important parameters were the rates of BOD decay, Org-N oxidation, $NH_3-N$ oxidation, Org-P decay. The calibrated and verified results by QUAL2E model were correlation coefficient of $0.45{\sim}0.94$. The results displayed a good agreement between the variables of the field measurements and the model simulations, indicating a potential use of the QUAL2E model for the water quality assessment in the Nam River.
