  • The augmented visualization of analysis results can play an import role as a post-processing tool for the modeling & simulation (M&S) technology. In particular, it is essential to develop such an M&S tool which can run on various multi-devices. This paper presents an augmented reality (AR) approach to visualizing and interacting with M&S post-processing results through mobile devices. The proposed approach imports M&S data, extracts analysis information, and converts the extracted information into the one used for AR-based visualization. Finally, the result can be displayed on the mobile device through an AR marker tracking and a shader-based realistic rendering. In particular, the proposed method can superimpose AR-based realistic scenes onto physical objects such as 3D printing-based physical prototypes in a seamless manner, which can provide more immersive visualization and natural interaction of M&S results than conventional VR or AR-based approaches. A user study has been performed to analyze the qualitative usability. Implementation results will also be given to show the advantage and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

  • Fire simulation has been developed for decades to analyze fire cases and provide a tool to study fundamental fire dynamics and combustion. There are three way of fire simulation which are a full scale simulation, an experimental simulation and a computational simulation. In case of a full scale simulation, because a higher cost, a higher risk, more efforts are needed, a demand for it has been decreased. But recently a demand for an experimental simulation and a computational simulation has been increased. A computational simulation has several advantages; lower cost, short period, many case studies, more visual results, a quantitative result and etc. FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator) which has been developed in BFRL(Building and Fire Research Laboratory), NIST(National Institute of Standards and Technology) is a popular world wide code for fire simulation. Lack of accurate predictions by the model could lead to erroneous conclusions with regard to fire safety. All results should be evaluated by the informed judgment of the qualified user.

  • In this study, we analyzed the effects of data visualization education with using Python on the improvement of computing thinking ability of the 6th grade students of elementary school. Based on the results of the needs analysis of 60 elementary school teachers and 120 elementary school students, we developed the data visualization education program. In the developed educational program, 24 elementary school students were trained for 6 days and 36 hours in total. Thereafter, students were subjected to pre- and post-comparison tests. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the data visualization education with using Python is effective in improving the Computational cognition, Fluency, Originality, Elaboration of the 6th grade students in elementary school.

  • As the size and dimension of target problems in the field of computational engineering including CFD gets bigger and higher, it is needed to have more efficient and flexible data visualization environment in terms of software and hardware. Even though it is still manageable to use a mouse in controlling 3-dimensional data visualization, it would be beneficial to use 3-D input device for 3-D visualization. 'Data Glove' is one of the best 3-D input devices, because human hands are best tools understanding 3-D space. Signals coming from 'Data Glove' are analog and very sensitive to finger motions, so we decided to use a digital filter. This paper describes our experience and benefits of using data glove in controlling 3-Dimensional Postprocess Software.

  • Hidden line removal(HLR) algorithms can be devised either in the image space or in the object space. This paper describes a hidden line removal algorithm in the object space specifically for the CAD viewer data. The approach is based on the Appel's 'Quantitative Invisibility' algorithm and fundamental concept of 'back face culling'. Input data considered in this algorithm can be distinguished from those considered for HLR algorithm in general. The original QI algorithm can be applied for the polyhedron models. During preprocessing step of our proposed algorithm, the self intersecting surfaces in the view direction are divided along the silhouette curves so that the QI algorithm can be applied. By this way the algorithm can be used for any triangulated freeform surfaces. A major advantage of this algorithm is the applicability to general CAD models and surface-based visualization data.

  • The optimal design is needed for the blade geometry of the quad-rotor blades which is mainly used for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. To do this, it is important to analyze the wakes under the blades. In the present study, the flow around the rotating blades was analyzed using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). The maximum axial velocity was measured at about 60% position toward the radial direction of the blade. The positions of vorticities in the test section obtained by PIV and CFD were turned out to be almost alike. The values in the difference of pressure coefficients at the upper and the lower blades were increased depending on the radial direction. Then, the values were decreased at the blade tip. The data of the flow analysis in the present study are expected to be served as the design of blades and ducts for the thrust improvement in the future.

  • Developments in the emerging field of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD), which is made possible by the supercomputer technologies, introduce a new problem of analysing the massive amount of output produced. This problem is common to fields of computational science and engineering. Scientific visualization is to solve this problem by applying advanced technologies of computer graphics. Methods of scientific visualization are studded to visualize calculated flow fields. Different methods of scientific visualization has been surveyed, analysed and compared to select one method, iso-surface. Methods of constructing iso-surfaces from a 3-D data set have been studied. A new algorithm for constructing iso-surfaces has been developed. The algorithm can be classified as one of surface tiling methods. To develope a portable visualization system the international standard PHIGS PLUS and its implementation on X-Window system, PEX, have been selected as the development environment. A prototype of visualization system has been developed. The developed visualization system has been tried to visualize several well-known flow fields.
