Slip factor is defined as an empirical factor being multiplied to theoretical energy transfer for the estimation of real work input of a centrifugal compressor. Researchers have tried to develop a simple empirical model, for a century, to predict a slip factor. However most these models were developed on the condition of design point assuming inviscid flow. So these models often fail to predict a correct slip factor at off-design condition. In this study, we summarized various slip factor models and compared these models with experimental and numerical data at off-design condition. As a result of this study, Wiesner's and Paeng and Chung's models are applicable for radial impeller, but all the models are not suitable for backswept impeller. Finally, the essential avenues for future study is discussed.

In this work, a modified stage-stacking method for the performance prediction of multi-stage axial flow compressors is proposed. The method is based on a simultaneous calculation of all interstage variables (temperature, pressure, flow velocity) instead of the conventional sequential stage-by-stage scheme. The method is also very useful in simulating the effect of changing angles of the inlet guide vane and stator vanes on the compressor operating characteristics. Generalized stage performance curves are used in presenting the performance characteristics of each stage. General assumptions enable determination of flow path data and stage design performance. Performance of various real compressors is predicted and comparison between prediction and field data validates the usefulness of the present method.
Background: As one of the most frequently occurring accidents in a chemical plant, a fire accident may occur at any place where transfer or handling of combustible materials is routinely performed. Methods: In particular, a jet fire incident in a chemical plant operated under high pressure may bring severe damage. To review this event numerically, Computational Fluid Dynamics methodology was used to simulate a jet fire at a pipe of a compressor under high pressure. Results: For jet fire simulation, the Kemeleon FireEx Code was used, and results of this simulation showed that a structure and installations located within the shelter of a compressor received serious damage. Conclusion: The results confirmed that a jet fire may create a domino effect that could cause an accident aside from the secondary chemical accident.
This paper describes the control charcteristics of thermal/flow systems. In thermal/flow systems, the transport lag plays as a dead time causing a deterioration of the controllability. Besides this, such many parameters including the temperature, pressure, and flow rate affect the system response that a control scheme which can deal with multi-input is required. Particularly in a refrigerant compressor test facility, the evaporator and condenser interact each other so that the change in the evaporator pressure cause the condenser pressure to change or vice versa. Therefore, to control the evaporator pressure, not only the cooling water flow rate in the evaporator but also the coolant flow rate in the condenser is considered. Meanwhile, the conventional PID controllers, which is suitable for a single input system, shows a large overshoot for a disturbance input. In this work, the predictive control scheme is introduced and its applicability is discussed for thermal/flow systems.

A computational study on the performance prediction of a two-stage axial compressor has been performed. A quasi-steady mixing-plane method is used on the rotor/stator interface to simulate the unsteady interaction phenomena. Detail flow mechanisms, for example, choke, stall, shock/boundary interaction, etc., have been observed and discussed in conjunction with performance characteristics. Calculational data agree reasonably well with the experimental data in terms of the performance characteristics showing the applicability of computational methods to the design validation of multistage axial compressors instead of experimental methods. But it is found that the stall margin of the original compressor was rather small, thus the design modification adopting a simple 1D/2D method has been conducted and its corresponding computations are also carried out. As a result of the redesign process, the stall margin becomes wide enough, but the overall performance is unsatisfactory, therefore, it seems that the redesign of the blades using 3-D methods is needed in the future work.
The performance of small-size impellers with ruled surfaces was investigated for flank milling over a wide speed range, using computational fluid dynamics analyses and gas bench tests. An impeller with a ruled surface was designed, manufactured, and tested to evaluate the effects of blade loading, the backsweep angle, and the relative velocity distribution on the compressor performance. The simulations and tests were completed using the same compressor cover with identical inlet and outlet channels to accurately compare the performance of the abovementioned impeller with a commercial impeller containing sculptured blades. Both impellers have the same number of blades, number of splitters, and shroud meridional profiles. The backsweep angles of the blades on the ruled impeller were selected to work with the same pinched diffuser as for a sculptured impeller. The inlet-to-exit relative velocity diffusion ratio and the blade loading were provided to maximize the flow rate and to minimize the surge flow rate. The design flow rate, rpm, were selected same for both impellers. Test results showed that for the compressor stage with a ruled impeller, the efficiency was increased by 0.32% with an extended surge margin without a reduction in the pressure ratio as compared to the impeller with the sculptured design. It was concluded that an increased relative velocity diffusion coupled with a large backsweep angle was an effective way to improve the compressor stage efficiency. Additionally, an appropriate blade loading distribution was important for achieving a wide operating range and higher efficiency.
The reciprocating compressor is widely used in the industry field, because it has simple principle and high efficiency. In this work, in order to improve design of discharge passage line in hydrogen compression system Numerical analysis was conducted. General information about an internal gas flow is presented by numerical analysis approach. Relating with hydrogen compressing system, which have an important role in hydrogen energy utilization, this should be a useful tool to observe the flow quickly and clearly. Flow characteristic analysis, including velocity, pressure and turbulence kinetic energy distribution of hydrogen gas going out from the cylinder to discharge-path line are presented in this paper. Discharge-passage model is designed based on real model of hydrogen compressor. Pressure boundary conditions are applied considering the real condition of operating system. The result shows velocity, pressure and turbulent kinetic energy are not distributed uniformly along the passage of the Hydrogen system. Path line or particles tracks help to demonstrate flow characteristics inside the passage. The existence of vortices and flow direction can be precisely predicted. Based on this result, the design improvement might be done.

In the present study, water vapor is injected at various positions in a Clean Dry Air (CDA) system such as a system inlet duct, compressor inlet, and compressor outlet by humidified air turbines. The application of evaporative cooling reduces the compression work and enhances the Energy Consumption Index (ECI) per unit volume. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the compressor power performance with different inlet air temperatures and humidity conditions. It is found that the actual power consumption and discharge flow are significantly influenced by the inlet air temperature as well as relative humidity. The results obtained during this study are compared both numerically and experimentally and are found to be in very good agreement.

In this paper, we propose an analysis model for the performance of channel error probability in Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) using Markov model. In this model it is assumed that the compressor and decompressor work in Unidirectional Mode. And the average throughput of SCTP protocol is obtained by finding the throughputs of when the initial channel state is good or bad.
In recent years, Big Data has been a topic of great interest for the production and operation work of offshore plants as well as for enterprise resource planning. The ability to predict future equipment performance based on historical results can be useful to shuttling assets to more productive areas. Specifically, a centrifugal compressor is one of the major piece of equipment in offshore plants. This machinery is very dangerous because it can explode due to failure, so it is necessary to monitor its performance in real time. In this paper, we present stream data processing architecture that can be used to compute the performance of the centrifugal compressor. Our system consists of two major components: a virtual tag stream generator and a real-time data stream manager. In order to provide scalability for our system, we exploit a parallel programming approach to use multi-core CPUs to process the massive amount of stream data. In addition, we provide experimental evidence that demonstrates improvements in the stream data processing for the centrifugal compressor.
