Off-design experimental performance was investigated for a small centrifugal compressor, whose impeller diameter is about 125mm, used in an industrial gas turbine. Test rig was designed and manufactured with a radial inflow turbine and a combustor to supply driving power to the compressor. Static pressure was measured on the casing of the impeller, vaneless diffuser, vaned diffuser and volute. Total pressure was obtained using specially fabricated rakes at the vaned diffuser throat and exit. Circumferential nonuniformity was found, near surge, in the Impeller, vaned diffuser and volute region. Spanwise nonuniform flow from the impeller affected the total pressure defects in the vaned diffuser region. Static pressure distortion in the circumferential direction in the volute was found near surge, where the minimum occurred near 140 degree position.

A three-dimensional computation was conducted to understand effects of the inlet boundary layer thickness on the internal flow in a low-speed axial compressor operating at the design condition($\phi=85\%$) and near stall condition($\phi=65\%$). At the design condition, the flows in the axial compressor show, independent of the inlet boundary layer thickness, similar characteristics such as the pressure distribution, size of the hub comer-stall, tip leakage flow trajectory, limiting streamlines on the blade suction surface, etc. However, as the load is increased, the hub corner-stall grows to make a large separation region at the junction of the hub and suction surface for the inlet condition with thick boundary layers at the hub and casing. Moreover, the tip leakage flow is more vortical than that observed in case of the thin inlet boundary layer and has the critical point where the trajectory of the tip leakage flow is abruptly turned into the downstream. For the inlet condition with thin boundary layers, the hub corner-stall is diminished so it is indistinguishable from the wake. The tip leakage flow leans to the leading edge more than at the design condition but has no critical point. In addition to these, the severe reverse flow, induced by both boundary layer on the blade surface and the tip leakage flow, can be found to act as the blockage of flows near the casing, resulting in heavy loss.

It has been recognized that the flow in the blade passage of an axial turbomachinery rotor is very complex and is influenced by various flow phenomena, of which the tip leakage flow passing through the gap between rotor blade tip and casing plays a significant role. The losses produced due to the existence of the clearance have been known to be a large contributor of the rotor overall losses. Despite several experimental studies on non-rotating blade in the cascade configuration, and on actual rotating blades, the detailed nature of the complex flow phenomena associated with tip leakage, however, remains largely unresolved. Thus, a single-stage compressor test rig was built and measurements were taken at upstream and downstream of the rotor of this compressor at the aerodynamics laboratory of University of New South Wales. A five-hole probe and a hot-wire probe were used to measure mean and fluctuating flow parameters. The results show that tip leakage losses rise rapidly beyond tip gap of 0.01 Furthermore, the present project also identifies the regions in the wake behind the rotor of the axial compressor where such losses are concentrated. These results should be useful in the better design of rotors for improved performance of axial compressor.

Design parameters for suction channels of process centrifugal compressors were investigated, and an optimization method to enhance stage efficiency by using the new design parameters was proposed. From results of computational fluid dynamics, the passage sectional area ratios $A_c/A_e$, $A_e/A_s$ and $A_c/A_s$ were found to be the dominant parameters for the pressure loss and circumferential flow distortion, where $A_c$, $A_e$ and $A_s$ are passage sectional areas for the casing upstream side, casing entrance and impeller eye, respectively. The Base suction channel was optimized using the new design parameters, and the Base and Optimized types were tested. Test results showed that the Optimized suction channel achieved 3.8% higher stage efficiency than the Base suction channel while maintaining the same operating range.
Generally the Shrouded type impeller is considered to free from the loss of tip leakage flow, but it is actually not possible to complete sealing between the rotating impeller and the sealing which is stay still. As a result, there is the possibility of flow leaking between impeller exit to entrance, especially with high pressure ratio compressor machine. The Cavity leakage flow is expected to influence negative effect on a machine performance and also inner flow structure. In this study, Impeller with shroud-casing gap leakage flow is simulated by numerical method (Using CFX 12.1). The influence of leakage flow on compressor performance and efficiency will be analysed, also detail flowfield change will posted.
The flow characteristics of the vaned diffuser were complicated with geometric shapes. We have studied the effects of various vaned diffuser configurations, such as divergence angles and rectangular and conical cross-section shapes. Numerical analyses are carried out for the diffuser and casing. The pressure recovery coefficient was calculated to estimate the performance of the diffuser, and then compared with the measure data. Results show that the shapes and the divergence angles of the diffuser strongly influence on the performance of the small-size turbo-compressor.
Upgrade development of a high pressure ratio centrifugal compressor in marine engine turbochargers is presented. A new matched operating point at increased speed of rotation was determined through system cycle analysis using the exisitng test data of turbine performance. Under some severe restrictions for geometric parameters, the state-of-the-art methods of both aerodynamic design and CFD analysis were applied, in which only an impeller, a vaned diffuser and some part of casing wall were modified. Prototype hardware was fabricated and assembled for system performance tests. Excellent performance in pressure ratio and efficiency was obtained over whole speed region. Reduced surge and choke margin was, however, observed at design speed of rotation.

The aerodynamic performance of a single-stage transonic axial compressor was experimentally evaluated by measuring pressure and temperature distribution at the inlet and outlet of the compressor. The compressor was developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute through multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) method, especially integrating aerodynamic performance and structural stability. The test results show that the pressure ratio is 1.65 and the efficiency is 85.8 % at design point, where the corrected speed is 22,000 rpm and the corrected mass flow rate is 15.4 kg/s, and it has a good agreement with the design target and computational results. The distribution of pressure ratio is very steep at design speed, compared with the trend of other subsonic compressors. Also the static pressure distribution on the stator casing shows that the blade loading is gradually increasing through the stage as designed.

A three-dimensional computation was conducted to make a study about effects of the inlet boundary layer thickness on the total pressure loss in a low-speed axial compressor operating at the design condition ($\phi=85\%$) and near stall condition($\phi=65\%$). Differences of the tip leakage flow and hub corner-stall induced by the inlet boundary layer thickness enable the loss distribution of total pressure along the span to be altered. At design condition, total pressure losses for two different inlet boundary layers are almost alike in the core flow region but the larger loss is generated at both hub and tip when the inlet boundary layer is thin. At the near stall condition, however, total pressure loss fer the thick inlet boundary layer is found to be greater than that for the thin inlet boundary layer on most of the span except the region near hub and casing. Total pressure loss is scrutinized through three major loss categories in a subsonic axial compressor such as profile loss, tip leakage loss and endwall loss using Denton's loss model, and effects of the inlet boundary layer thickness on the loss structure are analyzed in detail.
The instrumentation was studied in order to measure aerodynamic performance and efficiency of a compressor as a component of a 5MW-class gas turbine for power generation. In case of an axial compressor, the distributions of static pressure on a casing can be obtained by averaging at each stage and those of total pressure and temperature in the flow field of the compressor can be measured with a Kiel temperature probe. In case of a centrifugal compressor, the static pressures at the hub and the tip, respectively, of an impeller exit are considerably different, so the pressures need to be measured at both positions and thereafter averaged. The distributions of static pressures in a diffuser and a deswirler are measured at ten positions along five streamlines in one pitch. In addition the flow field can be measured in detail by 5-hole Pitot tube in order to analyze the flow characteristics of the core flow region and wake region and the rotor-stator interaction of the compressor.
