  • The residual stresses in the interface region of the Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC)/Thermally Grown Oxide (TGO)/Bond Coat (BC) were calculated on the TBC-coated superalloy samples using a Finite Element Method (FEM). It was found that the stress distribution of the interface boundary was dependent upon mainly the geometrical shape or its aspect ratio and the thickness of TGO layer, which was formed by growth and swelling behavior of oxide layer. Maximum compressive residual stress in the TBC/TGO interface is higher than that of the TGO/bond coat interface, and the tensile stress had nothing to do with change of an aspect ratio. The compressive residual stresses in the TBC/TGO and TGO/bond coat interface region increased gradually with the TGO growth.

  • In this paper, the effect of the compressive residual stresses which were obtained under the various shot velocities of shot balls on the fatigue behaviors of a spring steel, were investigated. The examination of CT specimen test were executed with the materials(JISG SUP9) which are being commonly used for the springs of automotive vehicles. As a result, the optimal shot velocity of shot balls were acquired considering the peak values of the compressive residual stresses on the surface of specimen and effect on the speed of the fatigue crack propagation da/dN in stage II and the threshold stress intensity factor range Δ$K_{th}$ in stage I. Also the material constant C and the crack propagation index m in the formula of paris law da/dN= C $({\Delta}K^m)$ were suggested in this work to estimate the dependency on the shot velocity.

  • Preflex beam is a method of construction to hold the Pre-compressive stresses over the concrete pier by the Preflexion load. During the fabrication of the girder, welding causes the welding residual stresses. The welding residual stresses must be relieved to generate the accurate compressive pre-stresses that is designed. On this study, to find out the thermal distribution characteristics on the girder by welding, both the three-dimensional finite element analysis and the two-dimensional finite element analysis in a quasi-steady state is carried out. After comparing with each result between the three-dimensional analysis and the two-dimensional analysis, finite element analysis is carried out against the actual girder and analyze welding thermal distribution characteristic over the preflex beam and obtain the input data for the analysis of the welding residual stresses.

  • This paper presents application of neutron diffraction technique to the measurement of residual stresses in the T-type 20 m thick welded stainless steel plates(100$\times$50 $mm^2$ and 50$\times$50 $mm^2$). The High Resolution Powder Diffractormeter of the Korea Atomic Research Institute was utilized in the measurement. The power of nuclear reactor was 24 MWt and the measured reflection in the 220 plane (2$\theta$)was $92.66^{\circ}$. Poisson ratio of 0.265 and elastic constant of 211 GPa were applied to the calculation of stresses and strains. Three directional components such as normal, transverse, and longitudinal stresses were measured. The results showed that three components were tensile and became compressive along the y axis in the zone away from the welded center. The compressive stresses became tensile in the zone away from the center line of x axis. This may be due to the balance effect caused by the net stress to keep the specimen shape flat.

  • In this study, we measured the thermally and chemically induced residual stresses on glaze using the photoelastic method. Porcelain with thermally induced residual stress showed compressive stress of 49 MPa for thermal expansion mismatch and a locally fluctuated stress field over the glaze layer due to compensation of compressive stresses around pores. In the case of chemically strengthened porcelain, the compressive stress on the glaze was 151 MPa which was around 3 times higher than the stress on thermally strengthened glaze. The trend of fracture strength of thermally and chemically strengthened porcelains was coincident with that of the residual stress of porcelains.

  • One of the most interesting and promising steel groups considered for the rocket motor case, aircraft and aerospace component is the maraging(martensitic plus aging) nickel steel, developed by International Nickel Company in 1960. This material attains a very high strength with good fracture toughness by simple heat treatments which do not involve a quenching. Full strength can be obtained by "maraging" at 480.deg. for 3 hours for the 18% Ni maraging steel. The effect of heat treatments was considered on the residual stress field of 18% Ni maraging steel weldments. In experiments, various heat treatments such as stress relieve heat treatment, aging and solution heat treatment were carried out of the GTA weldments and the residual stresses were measured by using the hole drilling method. Whereas the conventional pattern of residual stress shows the stresses to be maximum along the weld centerline with tensile stress extending into the heat affected zone, the pattern in maraging steels shows the centerline stress to be compressive. After welding, a series of aging, solution heat treatment and solution heat treatment plus aging treatment were carried out and the residual stresses were measured to reveal that these heat treatments almost completely remove the welding residual stresses.

  • Fiber reinforced metal laminate(FRML) consists of alternations layers of metal and fiber reinforced composite. The difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion between metal and composite layer produces remarkable amount of thermal residual stresses between layers. Generally, FRML shows a tensile stress in metal layers, a compressive stress in composite layers after curing. In this study, the thermal residual stresses of several types of FRML are investigated to get the best combination of metal and composite which can reduce the thermal residual stresses. The residual stress level is compared with the strength of each layers to explain the fracture mechanism of FRML.

  • Since the pre flex beam is fabricated by welding, the precompressive stresses that should occur over the concrete pier are diminished by the welding residual stresses. Therefore the welding residual stresses must be relieved during the fabrication. So the analysis and examination of the accurate welding residual stress distribution characteristic are necessary. On this study, accurate distribution of welding residual stress of preflex beam is analyzed by finite element method.

  • In LSP (laser shock peening) treatment, the laser source geometries when the laser beam strikes the metal target area are diverse. The laser spot geometry affects the residual stress field beneath the treated surface of the metallic materials, which determines the characteristics of the pressure pulse. In this paper, detailed finite-element (FE) simulations on laser shock peening have been conducted in order to predict the magnitude and of the residual stresses and the depth affected in Inconel alloy 600 steel. The residual stress results are compared for circular, rectangular, and elliptical laser spot geometries. It is found that a circular spot can produce the maximum compressive residual stresses near the surface but generates tensile residual stresses at the center of the laser spot. In the depth direction, an elliptical laser spot produces the maximum compressive residual stresses. Circular and elliptical spots plastically affect the alloy to higher depths than a rectangular spot.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of residual stress on fatigue crack growth behavior. For this purpose, submerged arc welding was performed on SM50A steel plate and post weld heta treatment (PWHT) was followed. Residual stress distribution on the weld plate was determined by a hole drilling method and a series of .DELTA.P-const. and .DELTA.K-decreasing fatigue test were performed on the three different regions, i.e. weld metal, HAZ and base metla. Following conclusins were achieved. 1. In "as welded" specimens, tensile residual stresses were produced in the center portion of the specimen while compressive residual stresses were produced near the edges. In PWHT specimens, however, most of the residual stresses were disappeared. 2. The fatigue crack growth behavior in low .DELTA.K region was considerably affected by the presence of residual stress in both "as welded" and PWHT specimens. 3. Because of the relaxation of residual stresses in PWHT condition, the values of m increased from 2.62-2.78 (in the "as welded" condition) to 3.57-3.91 (in the "PWHT" condition)3.91 (in the "PWHT" condition)condition)
