Strain localization is important phenomenon since it governs the total behavior or ultimate loads in various kinds of engineering problems. Establishment of an analysis method for strain localization phenomena is also of great concern for expansion of fracture mechanics of concrete. Inside zone of localization, a decrese in stress is accompanied by an increse in strain; outside the strain decreses. All deformation localization phenomenon cannot be predicted by both the classical stress-strain formulation and the linear elastic fracture mechanics. In this paper, a simple one dimensional model including localized deformation zone is studied under compressive and tensile loading. When the model is loaded. localization is assumed to occur uniformly in a finite region and material outside the localization zone is modelled as elastic unloading occurs. Size effects of effective elastic moduli under compression and tension in localization zone are examined.
The Ni-Al intermetallic compound that has the greatest potential to be commercialized shows the high ductility at room temperature with the addition of boron, but has extremely low ductility at high temperature and oxidation environment. On this research work, the changes of microstructure and compressive fracture properties were studied in ($NiAl+Ni_3Al$) two-phase alloys. The precipitation behavior of $Ni_3Al$ after solution treatment at $1300^\circC$ for 14hrs and aging treatment at $800^{\circ}C$ for 14hrs was varied with Al content in ($NiAl+Ni_3Al$) two-phase alloys. These microstructure could be modified dramatically by suitable heat treatments. Martensite or martensite plus $Ni_3Al$ microstructure was obtained upon oil quenching from $1300^\circC$. Aging of Martensite at $800^\circC$ resulted in the $Ni_3Al$ plus NiAl phase. The compressive fracture strength and compressive fracture strain were improved by the $Ni_3Al$ plus NiAl phase mixtures at room temperature and $1100^\circC$. Microcracks are observed mostly in the region of NiAl and the interface of $NiAl-Ni_3Al$ phase after compressive test at room temperature. In the case of high temperature compressive test, microcracks are formed in the region of $Ni_3Al$ phase.

Fracture behavior of concrete subjected to dynamic loading is affected by loading rate and strain rate. In this study, compressive strength properties according to strain rate of fiber reinforced cement composites by rapid loading with 500Ton rapid loading test machine was analyzed.
Accidental events such as collisions, groundings, and hydrocarbon explosions in marine structures can cause catastrophic damage. Thus, it is extremely important to predict the extent of such damage, which determines the total amount of oil spills and the residual hull girder strength. Punching fracture tests were conducted by Choung (2009b), where various sizes of indenters and circular unstiffened steel plates with different thicknesses were used to quasi-statically realize damage extents. A three-dimensional fracture strain surface was developed based on a reference (Choung et al., 2015b), where the average stress triaxiality and average normalized Lode angle were used as the parameters governing the fracture of ductile steels. In this study, new numerical analyses were performed using very fine axisymmetric elements in combination with an Abaqus user-subroutine to implement the three-dimensional fracture strain surface. Conventional numerical analyses were also conducted for the tests to identify the best fit fracture strain values by changing the fracture strains. Based on the phenomenon of the average normalized Lode angle starting out positive and then becoming slightly negative, it was inferred that the shear stress primarily dominates in determining the fractures locations, with a partial contribution from the compressive stress. It should be stated that the three-dimensional fracture surface effectively predicted at least the shear stress-dominant fracture behavior of a mild steel.
A method for lmprovlng strengths of recycled concrete was studied to make use of it in nolmal
concrete structures. Recycled conc~ete was prepared by replacing 50% by weight of coarse aggregate with recycled aggregate. Mix design rnet hod for crushed aggregates was used and specirriens were cured by normal moisture curing method. A plastlciser and a fly ash were added to the mix to improve performance of recycled concrete. Compressive strength, flexural strength,
tensile strength, elastic modulus, stress-strain relationship, long-term compressive strength and fracture toughness were evaluated and compared with those of rlormal concretes. Recycled concrete showed, in general, lower compressive strength than normal concreks. It also showed lower elastic modulus, lower tensile and flexural strengths, and higher strain under the same stress
level. However, by reducing w /c ratio down to 35% using the plasticiser. average compressive strength(${\alpha}_{28}$) of recycled concrete was reached. with slump of $16{\pm}2$cm, to $225kg/cm^2$ or hlgher,
which is an acceptable strmgth level for normal structural concrete. I-Iowevei., elastic modulus
and strain should be improved further for practical use of recycled concrctc: in normal structure.
Fly ash addition in both concretes showed an effect of irnprovilig long term compressive strength
and reducing strengths.

The compressive characteristics of thick carbon/epoxy composite in a submarine environment was investigated in this study. The specimens made of thick carbon fiber/epoxy composite that were immersed into seawater Jar thirteen months. the seawater content at saturation was about $1.2\%$ of the specimen weight. Compressive tests have been performed in different hydrostatic pressures of 0.1 MPa, 100 MPa, 200 MPa, and 270 MPa. The results showed that the compressive elastic modulus increased about $12.3\%$ as the hydrostatic pressure increased from 0.1 MPa to 200 MPa. The results also showed that compressive fracture strength increased $28\%$ and compressive fracture strain increased $8.5\%$ as the hydrostatic pressure increased from 0.1 MPa to 270 MPa.
Mechanical properties and microstructures of the Ni-AI-Fe and Ni-AI-Fe-(B, Zr) alloys which containing $10{\sim}30at$.%Fe, 0.1at.%B and/or 0.1at.%Zr have been investigated. The experimental results showed that the microstructures of Ni25Al were changed from a single phase ${\gamma}$ to dual phase ${\gamma}$ and ${\beta}$ by addition of 27at.%Fe. Ni45Al, however, kept the single ${\beta}$ phase even though Fe was added upto 30at.%. The hardness of Ni25Al were increased from $H_RB$ 70 to $H_RC$ 39 by addition of 27at.%Fe. In the case of Ni45Al which have $H_RC$ 37, the hardness was decreased by lOat.%Fe addition, but increased with 30at.%Fe. The yield strength and ultimate compressive strength in the compressive test have showed a similar trend with the hardness change. The strain to fracture was 14% at maximum and achieved in Ni25Al-27at.%Fe and Ni25Al-27at.%Fe-0.1 at.%B alloys. The Ni45Al showed a relatively low strain to fracture as 4%. The impact absorption energy of Ni25Al increased from 0.74 kg-m to 1.81 kg-m by addition of 27at.%Fe. In case of Ni45Al, the addition of lOat.%Fe and lOat.%Fe with small amounts of Band Zr did not change significantly the impact absorption energy of 0.60 kg-m, whereas the addition of 30at.%Fe with small amounts of B and Zr increased it slightly. In fracture tests, both of two basic materials showed the same intergranular fracture but by adding Fe it changed to the cleavage fracture mode or co-existing of cleavage and intergranular fractures.
A newly conceived geopolymer composite was fabricated by a combination of the geopolymer and polyurethane sponge. The density and porosity of hardened geopolymer composite, corresponded to different pore sizes of polyurethane sponge, exhibited no significant differences from each other. However, the mechanical behavior, the compressive strength and flexural strength, showed slight differences accordingly. Fracture of the geopolymer composite exposed to high compressive load was not observed from all specimens containing polyurethane sponge. The toughness enhancement of the geopolymer composite, due to spontaneous elasticity of polyurethane sponge, crack spread, and crack diffraction, was identified through the stress-strain curve and microstructure of fracture surface. The newly designed geopolymer composite having a 3-dimensional sponge skeleton showed relatively higher flexural strength of 8.0 MPa than other conventional geopolymer composites.

Developed is a nonlinear fracture theory which can model the complex fracture behavior of concrete. This theory is based on the nonlinear behavior due to progressive microcracking and strain-softening in the fracture process zone of concrete cracks. The simplified realistic fracture model which preserves the same fracture energy for the different fracture process zone widths is also derived. By modeling fracture through stress-strain behavior, the effect of compressive stresses parallel to the crack plane can be easily taken into account. The comparisons of the present theory with valuable fracture test data available in the literature show good agreements, and the existing linear theory exhibits in many cases large deviations from the actual test results. A simple approximate formula for the fracture energy of concrete which should, be necessary for the fracture analysis of concrete structures is derived. Finally, the application of fracture theory to reinforced concrete and the necessity of further research are discussed.
A common site of fracture in maxillary complete denture is on the anteroposterior midline that coincides with the notch for relief of the labial frenum. Various approaches to reduce the incidence of this type of fracture have been suggested. The most widely used technique is the reinforcement of acrylic resin denture base with several solid metal forms. But few comparative studies on the efficacy of metal reinforcements have been reported. This study was conducted to compare reinforcing effects of commonly available metal reinforcements, which include wire, metal mesh embedded in the denture base and metal plate affixed to the impression surface of denture base by silicoating technique. This was load on the posterior. The strain gauges were oriented perpendicular to the anteroposterior midline of maxillary polished denture surface at one labial and the four palatal sites Non-renforced denture was used as control. The results were as follows : 1. In the non-reinforced denture group, only tensile strains on the palatal polished surface were observed. The tensile strains decreased in the order of incisive papilla, posterior denture border area, mid palatal area and rugae area. Compressive strain was observed on the labial polished surface. 2. As compared with the non-reinforced denture group, the metal plate or the metal mesh reinforced denture groups showed reduced palatal tensile strains, and the metal mesh reinforcement had a better reinforcing effect than the metal plate. But both reinforced denture groups showed no difference in the amount of compressive strain on the labial polished surface when compared to the non-reinforced denture group. 3. The metal wire positioned just above the labial notch decreased the compressive strain on the labial polished surface. But the presence of metal wires in the palatal polished surface caused increase in tensile strains in the area.
