High-speed railway trains entering and leaving tunnels generate finite amplitude pressure wave which propagate back and forth along the tunnels, reflecting at the open ends of the tunnels and at other discontinuities such as ventilation shafts and the train themselves. In present day railways, the magnitudes of the pressure waves are much too small to cause structual damage, but they are a serious potential source of aural discomport for passengers on unsealed trains. Almost always do the pressure waves propagating along the tunnels lead to a hazardous impulse noise near the exit portal of the tunnel. In order to alleviate such undesirable phenomena, some control strategies have been applied to the compression wave propagating inside the tunnel. The objective of the current work is to investigate the effect of tunnel entrance hoods on the entry compression wave at the vicinity of the tunnel entrance. Three types of entrance hoods were tested by the numerical method using the characteristics of method for a wide range of train speeds. The results show that the maximum pressure gradient of compression wave can be considerably reduced by the tunnel entrance hood. Desirable hood shape for reduction of the pressure transients and impulse noise was found to be of abrupt type hood with its cross-sectional area 2.5times the tunnel area.

Present study examines detonation wave propagation characteristics in annular channel. A normalized value of channel width to the annular radius was considered as a geometric parameter. A parametric study was carried out for a various regimes of detonation waves from weakly unstable to highly unstable detonation waves. Numerical approaches that used in the previous study of numerical requirements of the simulation of detonation wave propagations in 2D and 3D channel were used also for the present study with OpenMP parallization for multi-core SMP machines. The major effect of the curved geometry on the detonation wave propagation seems to be a flow compression effect, regardless of the detonation regimes. The flow compression behind the detonation wave by the curved geometry of the circular channel pushes the detonation wave front and results in the overdriven detonation waves with increased detonation speed beyond the Chapmann-Jouguet speed. This effect gets stronger as the normalized radius smaller, as expected. The effect seems to be negligible beyond the normalized radius of 10.

This study is to characterize the material property of early age high performance concrete emphasizing compressive strength using nondestructive testing methods. Three high performance concrete slabs of 600, 850 and 1100kg/$cm^{2}$ compressive strengths were prepared together with cylinders from same batches. Cylinder tests were peformed at the ages of 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after pouring. Using the impact echo method, the compression wave velocities were obtained based on different high performance concrete ages and compressive strengths. The equation to obtain the compressive strengths of high performance concrete has been developed using the obtained compression wave velocities. Using the SASW (spectral analysis of surface wave) method, the equation have also been developed to obtain the compressive strengths of high performance concrete based on the surface wave velocities.

Among several non-destructive testing methods, ultrasonic pulse velocity method has been widely used for the evaluation of concrete strength. However, this method might not provide accurate estimated results since factors influencing the relationship between strength and wave velocity is not considered. In this study, the evaluation methods of concrete strength using compression wave velocities measured by either ultrasonic pulse velocity method or impact-resonance method are proposed. A basic equation is obtained by the linear regression with velocity vs. strength data at a specific age and then, ageing factor is employed in the equation to consider the difference of the increasing rate between wave velocity and strength. Strengths predicted by the proposed equation agree well with test results.
Two compression ramp problems and an impinging shock problem are computed to investigate influence of turbulence models and eddy viscosity on the shock-wave / boundary layer interaction. A Navier-Stokes boundary layer generation code was applied to the generation of inflow boundary conditions. Computational results are validated well with the experimental data and effects of turbulence models are investigated. It is shown that the behavior of turbulence (eddy) viscosity directly affects both the extent of the separation and shock-wave positions over the separation.

An analytical closed-form solution for wave propagation velocity and damping in saturated porous media is presented in this paper The fully coupled field model with compressible solid Brains and pore water were used to derive this solution. An engineering approach for the analysis of fully saturated porous media was adopted and closed-form solutions for one dimensional wave propagation in a homogeneous domain were derived. The solution is highly versatile in that it considers compression of the solid grains, compression of the pore water, deformation of the porous skeleton, and spatial damping and can be used to compute wavespeeds of first and second kind and damping coefficients in various geologic materials. This solution provides a means of analyzing the influence of material property variations on wavespeed and attenuation. In Part 2 of this work the theoretical solution is incorporated into the numerical code and the code is used in a parametric study on wave propagation velocity and damping.

Most air-breathing aircraft operated in the hypersonic region are equipped with a scramjet engine. In a scramjet engine, a shock wave generated at an inlet acts as a compressor for a general gas turbine engine instead, so total pressure loss caused by the shock wave is considered very important. In this study, to minimize total pressure loss, a method of designing an external compression inlet using isentropic compression surface was proposed, and an external compression inlet with 3-deflection angles and Busemann inlet were designed under the same conditions. After that, through computational analysis, the performance characteristics at off-design conditions were compared. Each inlet shape was truncated according to the length of the 3-ramp external compression inlet, and the boundary layer correction was performed. The isentropic external compression inlet showed superior performance at the design point, but under the off-design conditions, its performance was degraded compared to the 3-ramp external compression inlet.

At this study, we investigated the chemical component and the mineral granular composition of sedimentary rock and others where were distributed in Taegu area and compared correlations with each data through the various physicla and mechanical characteristic test. As the result, d and E, they are kinds of granite, which contain much albite than others were proved to be strong by mechanical tests and the correlation moduli were proved to be more than 0.8 except P wave velocity-Poisson's ration relation when examined Elastic moduluous -Poisson's ration, P, wave velocity-Uniaxial compression strength, Elastic modulous -Uniaxial compression strength and Uniaxial compression strength-Poisson's ration correlation function graph.
In this study, a experimental method has been introduced for the various exhaust pipe geometry of 4-stroke single cylinder engine. The main experimental parameters are the variation of exhaust pipe diameters and lengths, to measuring the pulsating flow when the intake and exhaust valves are working. As the results of experimental test, the various exhaust geometry were influenced strongly on the exhaust pressure. As the exhaust pipe diameter was decreased, the amplitude and the number of compression wave in exhaust pressure was increased. According to decreasing pipe diameter, the number of compression wave in exhaust pressure was decreased. When the pipe diameter was increase, the second amplitude was increased.

Thanks to a new in-situ seismic probe, using bender elements and penetration scheme, a simple linear relationship between undrained shear strength(Cu) and shear wave velocity(Vs) was obtained. This priceless relationship is worthy to be illuminated further in ideal laboratory environment. To avoid sampling disturbance effect, special consolidation cylinders were used to make normally consolidated specimens from kaolinite suspension. The undrained shear strengths of the specimens were measured using unconsolidated undrained triaxial compression tests. Also shear wave velocity measurements were performedprior to shearing the same specimens, using the bender elements installed in the base pedestal and the top cap of the triaxial compression cell. The Cu-Vs relationship is fairly linear and supports the linear trend of clayey silt obtained using field testing. Also the classic density-shear modulus relationship for soft clay proposed by Hardin and Black(1969) was once more verified hereby.
