In this study, a cylinder embedded within cemented soils was used to cause directly tensile failure of cemented soils. An existing dumbbell type direct tensile test and a split tensile test that is most general indirect tensile test were also carried out to verify the developed built-in cylinder tensile test. Testing specimens with two different sand/cement ratios (1:1 and 3:1) and two curing periods (7 and 28 days) were prepared and tested. Total 10 specimens were prepared for each case and their average value was evaluated. Unconfined compression tests were also carried out and the ratio of compressive strength and tensile strength was evaluated. The tensile strength determined by built-in cylinder tensile test was slightly higher than that by dumbbell type direct tensile test. The dumbbell type test has often failed in joint part of specimen and showed some difficulty to prepare a specimen. Among three tensile testing methods, the standard deviation of tensile strength by split tensile test was highest. It was shown that the split tensile test is applicable to concrete or rock with elastic failure but not for cemented soils having lower strength.
Cemented soils have been widely used in road and dam construction, and recently ground improvement of soft soils. The strength of such cemented soils can be tested by using cored sample or laboratory-prepared specimen through unconfined compression or triaxial tests. It takes time to core a sample or prepare a testing specimen in the laboratory. In a certain situation, it is necessary to determine the in-situ strength of cemented soils very quickly and on time. In this study, the relation between unconfined compressive strength and shear wave velocity was investigated for predicting the in-situ strength of cemented soils. A small cemented specimen with 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height was prepared by Nakdong river sand and ordinary Portland cement. Its cement ratios were 4, 8, 12, and 16% and air cured for 7, 14, and 28 days. For recycling of resources, a blast furnace slag was also used with sodium hydroxide as an alkaline activator. The shear wave velocity for cemented soils was measured and then unconfined compressive strength test was carried out. As a cement ratio increased, the shear wave velocity and unconfined compressive strength increased due to increased density and denser structure. The relation between unconfined compressive strength and shear wave velocity increased nonlinearly for cemented soils with less than 16% of cement ratio.

In an attempt to investigate the effect of intermedate principal stresses which are related to the stress-strain behavior of standard sands, a series of three-Principal stress control tests were conducted for individual stress paths. The results have shown that shear strengths of sands vary with the stress paths. The variations in internal friction angle are accorded with the Habibs stress parameter, b which represents Stress paths, showing on abropt increase at the values between 0.0 and 0.268, a moderate level between 0.268 and 0.682, and a slight decrease between 0.682 and 1.0 However, the friction angles under a triaxial extention state, were found relatively larger than under a triaxial compression state. In general, such veriations were found to have the same tendency without any relevant relation with the density of specimens and confining pressures. Therefore, it is concluded, that the shear strength of sands are positively influeced by the intermediate principal stresses present in the media. And the influnce of intermediate principal stresses on shear strengths of sands found from the present study are well compared with the previous studies by Lade-Duncan and Matsuoka-Nakai revealing a similar tendency within the failure criteria proposed by them.
This study has obtained Soil Water Retention Curve (SWRC) of the unsaturated soil from the volumetric pressure plate extractor test and the triaxial compression tests was also conducted. By using the rainfall data measured in the site the seepage analysis of unsteady flow was performed with the program of SEEP/W in Geostudio 2007 and stability of the slope was analyzed with SLOPE/W program. Results of analyses show that shear strength of the unsaturated soil increases with the increase of matric suction. And it was also found that the net volumetric stress and the apparent cohesion increased with the matric suction. The seepage analysis of rainfall represents that the increasing rate of negative pore pressure at the zone of large negative pore pressure is appeared to be high even though lower rainfall intensity, but this tendency declines with ground depth. The stability analysis of slope was carried out for the actual plane of failure with the data representing the field condition. The factor of safety thus calculated was about unity (1.0) or just below, which means that the adopted method of analysis is in good agreement with the field condition.
The Paper describes the observed behaviour in the undrained triaxial condition of marine clays remoulded at various different levels of factors, to find out the effects of restricted factors on the stress-strain characteristics. The conventional triaxial compression tests $({\sigma}1>{\sigma}2={\sigma}3)$ were carried out on the 50mm in diameter and 100mm long cylindrical specimens of Gun-san bay mud under controlled various moisture content, density, axial strain rate and passing on No. 200 sieve. Significant conclusions from this study are; 1. The compressible deviator stress at failure of pure marine clay was observed to increase with the decrease of moulding moisture content. 2. The compressible deviator stress at failure increased with the increasing of moulding dry density. 3. The interaction between moisture content and density on the stress-strain characteristics of marine clay was remarkedly significant, as the result of factorial experimental method. 4. The effect of axial strain rate on stress-strain behaviour was unsignificant in marine clay and but the secant moduli could be pronounced on a slight decreasing with increase of the strain rate. 5. With the increasing of the passing on No. 200 sieve, the deviator stress increased regularly. 6. The multiple regression equation could be modeled for the prediction of stress or strain and the comparison with experimental results relatively proved the accuracy.
In this study, a blast furnace slag with the alkaliphilic microorganism (Bacillus halodurans) alkaline activator was used to cement natural soils in the field. A low-cost and massive microbial solution for cementation of field soils was produced and compared with existing microbial culture in terms of efficiency. A field soil was prepared for three different cementation areas: a cemented ground with microbial alkaline activator (Microbially-treated soil), a cemented ground with ordinary Portland cement (Cement-treated soil), and untreated ground (Non-treated soil). The testing ground was prepared at a size of 2.6 m in width, 4 m in length, and 0.2 m in depth. After 28 days, a series of unconfined compression tests on the cement-treated and microbially-treated soils were carried out. On the other hand, a torvane test was carried out for non-treated soil. The strength of field soils treated with microorganism was 1/5 times lower than those of cement-treated soil but is 6 times higher than non-treated soil. The pH measured from microbially-treated soil was about 10, which is lower than that of cement-treated soil (pH = 11). Therefore, it is more eco-friendly than Portland cemented soils. The C-S-H hydrates were found in both cement- and microbially-treated soils through SEM-EDS analyses and cement hydrates were also found around soil particles through SEM analysis.
The difficulties of satellite vibration testing are due to the commonly expressed qualification requirements being incompatible with the limited performance of the entire controlled system (satellite + interface + shaker + controller). Two features cause the problem: firstly, the main satellite modes (i.e., the first structural mode and the high and low tank modes) are very weakly damped; secondly, the controller is just too basic to achieve the expected performance in such cases. The combination of these two issues results in oscillations around the notching levels and high amplitude beating immediately after the mode. The beating overshoots are a major risk source because they can result in the test being aborted if the qualification upper limit is exceeded. Although the abort is, in itself, a safety measure protecting the tested satellite, it increases the risk of structural fatigue, firstly because the abort threshold has been already reached, and secondly, because the test must restart at the same close-resonance frequency and remain there until the qualification level is reached and the sweep frequency can continue. The beat minimum relates only to small successive frequency ranges in which the qualification level is not reached. Although they are less problematic because they do not cause an inadvertent test shutdown, such situations inevitably result in waiver requests from the client. A controlled-system analysis indicates an operating principle that cannot provide sufficient stability: the drive calculation (which controls the process) simply multiplies the frequency reference (usually called cola) and a function of the following setpoint, the ratio between the amplitude already reached and the previous setpoint, and the compression factor. This function value changes at each cola interval, but it never takes into account the sensor signal phase. Because of these limitations, we firstly examined whether it was possible to empirically determine, using a series of tests with a very simple dummy, a controller setting process that significantly improves the results. As the attempt failed, we have performed simulations seeking an optimum adjustment by finding the Least Mean Square of the difference between the reference and response signal. The simulations showed a significant improvement during the notch beat and a small reduction in the beat amplitude. However, the small improvement in this process was not useful because it highlighted the need to change the reference at each cola interval, sometimes with instructions almost twice the qualification level. Another uncertainty regarding the consequences of such an approach involves the impact of differences between the estimated model (used in the simulation) and the actual system. As limitations in the current controller were identified in different approaches, we considered the feasibility of a new controller that takes into account an estimated single-input multi-output (SIMO) model. Its parameters were estimated from a very low-level throughput. Against this backdrop, we analyzed the feasibility of an LQG control in cancelling beating, and this article highlights the relevance of such an approach.
In this study, a series of triaxial tests on Jeju basalt were carried out and then rock strength parameters were estimated by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion using the test results. The characteristics of both failure criterions were investigated through comparing the estimated rock strength parameters. As the result of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, the cohesions and the internal friction angles are determined as 5.35 MPa and $50.25^{\circ}$ of Pyoseonri basalt, 16.99 MPa and $60.66^{\circ}$ of Trachy-basalt, and 2.33 MPa and $37.05^{\circ}$ of Scoria, respectively. The cohesions and internal friction angles were estimated by the Hoek-Brown failure criterion in the basis of the results of regression analysis. The cohesions and the internal friction angles are determined as 4.77 MPa and $52.47^{\circ}$ of Pyoseonri basalt, 14.69 MPa and $60.70^{\circ}$ of Trachy-basalt, and 2.22 MPa and $47.60^{\circ}$ of Scoria, respectively. As the result of comparison between the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and the failure envelope predicted by the Hoek-Brown criterion, the cohesion estimated by the Hoek-Brown criterion is usually lower than that obtained from the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, whereas the friction angle estimated by the Hoek-Brown criterion is higher than that obtained from the Mohr-Coulomb criterion.

A large number of small particles may surround large gravels which are non-contact and dispersed within the ground. The strength of such soil may be influenced by the mechanical properties of a few coarse gravels. A specimen or gravel size can impact the shear characteristics of sand with dispersed gravels. In this study, the size of gravel and specimen varies and its effect on shear characteristics of a granular soil was evaluated. Five sizes of gravels with 7, 12, 15, 18, and 22 mm were used repeatedly and inserted in the middle of each compacted layer. A specimen consists of five or ten equal layers depending on gravel size, which is 5 cm or 10 cm in diameter and 10 cm or 20 cm in height. An embedded gravel ratio by weight is 3% and constant for all cases with gravel. After consolidation, a series of undrained triaxial compression tests under three confining pressures was performed on sand with dispersed gravels. The maximum deviator stress of a specimen with 10 cm in diameter was at average 30% higher than that with 5 cm in diameter and increased up to 90% for a specimen with gravel. When a gravel size of 7 and 12 mm used, the maximum deviator stress of a specimen with 10 cm in diameter was higher than that of one without gravel, whereas the maximum deviator stress of a specimen with 5 cm was higher or lower than that without gravel. The gravel size and specimen diameter influenced the undrained behavior of sand. The maximum deviator stress of a specimen with gravel either increased or decreased compared to that without gravel, depending on the ratio of gravel size to specimen diameter, 1/5.

The use of Thin Spray-on Liner (TSL) as an alternative to shotcrete has drastically increased since 1990s when it was first developed and introduced to mines. In this study, tensile strength test, bond strength test, compression test with specimens coated by TSL, and two kinds of bending tests proposed by EFNARC (2008) were performed with two kinds of TSLs with different material compositions in order to evaluate their support capacities. As a result, both TSLs were shown to be satisfactory for the minimum performance requirements for a structural rock support suggested by EFNARC (2008) and tensile strength of a TSL was shown to increase as its content of polymer was higher. In contrast, its bond strength was shown to increase proportional to the content of a cementitious component especially at the early age.
