The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect of premixed fuel on the reduction of exhaust emissions in premixed charge compression ignition engine. The premixed fuel is injected into the intake manifold to form homogeneous pre-mixture in the combustion chamber. The pre-mixture is ignited by a small amount of diesel fuel directly injected into the cylinder. In the case of gasoline as a premixed fuel of the engine, $NO_x$ and smoke concentration of exhaust emissions were reduced compared with the conventional diesel engine. But in the event of diesel fuel for premixed fuel, the rate of smoke reduction was small compared with the case of gasoline as a premixed fuel. HC and CO emissions were increased at high premixed ratio in the case of two premixed fuels. The combustion characteristics of the engine such as the combustion pressure, the rate of heat release, and other characteristics are compared.

Gasoline Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion is a new combustion concept. Unlike the conventional internal combustion engine, the premixed fuel mixture with high residual gas rate is auto-ignited and burned without flame propagation. There are several operating factors which affect HCCI combustion such as start of combustion (SOC), residual gas fraction, engine rpm, etc. Among these factors SOC is a critical factor in the combustion because it affects exhaust gas emissions, engine power, fuel economy and combustion characteristics. Therefore SOC of gasoline HCCI should be controlled precisely, and SOC detection should be preceded SOC control. This paper presents a control oriented SOC detection method using 50 percent normalized difference pressure. Normalized difference pressure is defined as the normalized value of difference pressure and difference pressure is difference between the in-cylinder firing pressure and the motoring pressure. These methods were verified through the HCCI combustion experiments. The SOC detection method using difference pressure provides a fast and precise SOC detection.

DME(Di-methyl Ether) has been expected to be one of the promising alternative fuels for compression ignition engines due to its low emission characteristics for particulate matter. However, its physical properties such as density, bulk modulus and viscosity are not comparable to those of conventional diesel fuel. Especially, problems caused by low lubricity and high compressibility need to be understood more thoroughly, when a DME fuel is used for compression ignition engine, especially with mechanical fuel supply system. In this study, measurement and calculation of DME's bulk modulus were carried out over the range of temperatures from $-3^{\circ}C$ to $53^{\circ}C$, and pressures from 50 bar to 250 bar using an experimental apparatus built in this work. The results show that DME is prone to be compressed more easily compared to diesel fuel. A comparison of bulk modulus with butane and propane were also made in this work.
The use of inedible vegetable oils as substitute for diesel fuel in compression ignition engine is of significance because of the great need for edible oil as food, and the reduction of biodiesel production cost etc. Jatropha curcas oil which is a leading candidate for the commercialization of inedible vegetable oils is selected in this study for reviewing the application in CI engine as an alternative fuel. The important properties of jatropha oil (JO) and JO biodiesel are summarized from the various sources in the literature. It is found that five different types of alternative fuel from JO such as neat JO, JO blends with diesel or other fuel, neat JO biodiesel, JO biodiesel blends with diesel or other fuel and degummed JO were extensively examined in the diesel engine. Two different application types of alternative fuels from JO such as preheating and dual fuelling were also tested, It should be pointed out that most of these applications are limited to single cylinder conditions. The systematic study for the selection of effective application method is required. It is clear that the blends of JOME and diesel can replace diesel fuel up to 10% by volume for running the existing common rail direct injection systems without any durability problems. The systematic assessment of spray characteristics of different types of JO and its derivatives for use as diesel engine fuel is also required.
The reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) is the technology that provides two different types of fuel to the combustion chamber with the advantage of significantly reducing particulate matter and nitrogen oxides emissions. However, due to the characteristics of lean combustion, combustion efficiency is worsened. The conventional type of pistons for conventional diesel combustion (CDC) has mostly been used in the researches on RCCI. Because the pistons for CDC are optimized to enhance flow and target spray, the pistons are unsuitable for RCCI. In this study, a piston that is suitable for RCCI is designed to improve combustion efficiency. The new piston was designed by considering the factors such as squish geometry, bowl depth, and surface area. The experiment was carried out by fixing the energy supply to 0.9kJ/cycle and 1.5kJ/cycle respectively. The two pistons were quantitatively compared in terms of thermal efficiency and combustion efficiency.

Natural gas is a high-octane fuel that is effective in controlling knocking combustion. In addition, as a low-carbon fuel with a high hydrogen-carbon ratio, it emits less carbon dioxide and almost no particulate matter compared to conventional fossil fuels. Stoichiometric combustion engines equipped with a three-way catalyst are useful in various fields such as transportation and power generation because of their excellent exhaust emission reduction performance. However, stoichiometric combustion engines have a disadvantage of lower thermal efficiency compared to lean combustion engines. In this study, a combination of high compression ratio and Atkinson cycle was implemented in a 11 liter, 6-cylinder, spark-ignition engine to improve the thermal efficiency of the stoichiometric engine. As a result, pumping and friction losses were reduced and the operating range was extended with optimized Atkinson camshaft. Based on the exhaust gas limit temperature of 730℃, the maximum load and thermal efficiency were improved to BMEP 0.66 MPa and BTE 35.7% respectively.
In recently, studies concerned to the diesel engine uses a natural gas as a fuel oil whose infra has been built already was approached to PCCI or HCCI with keeping a high thermal efficiency and reducing NOx and PM have been researching actively in normally single cylinder. An ignition source is required to bum the natural gas by a spark plug in gasoline engines, due to a higher auto-ignition temperature of natural gas. Then gas oil and DME were introduced as the ignition source. In this study as basic data for practical use of natural gas PCCI and HCCI engines, combustion characteristics and emission characteristics on 4-cylinders natural gas PCCI and HCCI engines with gas oil and DME as ignition sources were analyzed and the engine load range that is main object for practical use of PCCI and HCCI engines was made clearly by empirical experiment.
This work deals with a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. The fuel is injected indirectly into electrically heated inlet air flow. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector is cooled by the water of a specially designed coolant passage. The engine emission characteristics were investigated under the wide range of operating conditions such as 32 to 63 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, and 150 to $180^{\circ}C$ in the inlet air temperature. The ultra lean-burn can be achieved by the auto-ignition of gasoline fuel due to the heated inlet air in the compression ignition gasoline engine. It is confirmed that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide can be significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with the combustion of a conventional spark ignition engine.

Mathematically and chemically simplified reaction scheme for n(heptane that simulates autoignitions of the end gases in spark ignition engines has been developed and studied computationally. The five(equation model is described, to predict the essential features of hydrocarbon oxidation. This scheme has been calibrated against autoignition delay times measured in rapid compression machines. The rate constants, activation temperatures, Ta, Arrhenius pre-exponential constants, A, and heats of reaction for stoichiometric nheptane/air has all been optimized. Comparisons between computed and experimental autoignition delay times have validated the present simplified reaction scheme. The influences of heat loss and concentration of chain carrier at the beginning of compression upon autoignition delay times have been computationally investigated.
A comparative DNS study of the ignition characteristics of dual-fueled reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) and stratification charge compression ignition (SCCI) is investigated using a 116-species reduced primary reference fuel (PRF) mechanism. In the RCCI combustion, two PRF fuels (n-heptane and iso-octane) with opposite autoignition characteristics are separatedly supplied and in-cylinder blended such that spatial variations in fuel reactivity, fuel concentration and temperature are achieved. In the SCCI combustion, however, just a single fuel (PRF50) is used such that only fuel concentration and temperature inhomoginieties are obtained. Because three factors, rather than only two as in SCCI combustion, govern the overall RCCI combustion, combustion timing and combustion duration or heat release rate of RCCI combustion are flexibly and effectively controlled. It is found that the overall RCCI combustion occurs much earlier and its combustion duration is longer compared to SCC combustionI. Moreover, the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) has a positive effect on enhancing RCCI combustion by inducing a shorter combustion timing and a longer combustion duration as a result of the occurrence of a predominant low-speed deflagration-combustion mode.
