KFLOW Results of Airloads on HART-II Rotor Blades with Prescribed Blade Deformation

  • A three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes solver, KFLOW, using overlapped grids has recently been developed to simulate unsteady flow phenomena over helicopter rotor blades. The blade-vortex interaction is predicted for a descending flight using measured blade deformation data. The effects of computational grid resolution and azimuth angle increments on airloads were examined, and computed airloads and vortex trajectories were compared with HART-II wind tunnel data. The current method predicts the BVI phenomena of blade airloads reasonably well. It is found from the present study that a peculiar distribution of vorticity of tip vortices in an approximate azimuth angle range of 90 to 180 degrees can be explained by physics of the shear-layer interaction as well as the dissipation of numerical schemes.

An Experimental Study on Sealing Performance Improvement for Oil Mist Luibrication Environment (오일 미스트 윤활환경의 밀봉성능향상을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • Sealing an oil-air mixture plays important roles to have an enhanced lubrication for high speed spindle. Current work is emphasized on the investigation of the air jet effect on the protective collar type labyrinth seal. To improve the sealing capability of conventional labyrinth seal, air jet is injected against through the leakage flow. It has a combined geometry of a protective collar type and an air jet type. In this study, both of a numerical analysis by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) and experimental measurements are carried out to verify sealing improvement. Both of the turbulence and the compressible flow model are introduced in CFD analysis. The sealing effect of the leakage clearance and the air jet magnitude are studied for various parameter in the experiment. The results of pressure drop in the experiment match reasonably to those of the simulation by introducing a flow coefficient. Effects of sealing improvement are explained as decreasing of effective leakage clearance by air jetting. Thus, sealing effect is improved by amount of air jetting even though clearance becomes larger.

  • In this study, the compressibility of resin was considered in filling analysis to account for the possible packing type flow. A numerical simulation program employing a hybrid finite element/finite difference scheme was developed to solve Hele-Shaw flow of the compressible viscous fluid at non-isothermal conditions. To advance the melt front, a control volume approach was adopted. Thin complex 3-D shapes of cavities, runners, and sprues were discretized by employing triangular, cylindrical and/or rectangular strip elements. Mass conservation was applied to each control volume to solve for the pressure distribution. Directly applying a constant mass flow rate at the inlet removes calculation of the apparent pressure boundary conditions, resulting in better simulation condition. The Cross model was used to model viscosity and the Tait equation was employed to represent density as a function of temperature and pressure. The validity of the developed program was verified through comparisons with available data in the literature and the effect of compressibility on the pressure distribution was discussed. To reduce computation time, 1-D and 2-D elements were used instead of applying triangular elements and the numerical results were compared to each other.

  • There are many difficult problems in analyzing the flow characteristics in a high voltage circuit breaker such as shock wave and complex geometries, which may be either static or in relative motion. Although a variety of mesh generation techniques are now available, the generation of meshes around complicated, multicomponent geometries like a gas circuit breaker is still a tedious and difficult task for the computational fluid dynamics. This paper presents the computational method for analyzing the compressible flow fields in a high voltage gas circuit breaker using the Cartesian cut-cell method based on the CFD-CAD integration, which can achieve the accurate representation of the geometry designed by a CAD tools. The technique is frequently satisfied, and it will be almost universally so in the future, as the CFD-CAD traffic increases.

  • The time-dependent behavior of nonequilibrium condensation of moist air through the Ludwieg tube is investigated with a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method. The two-dimensional, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations, fully coupled with the condensate droplet growth equations, are numerically solved by a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme, with a second-order fractional time step. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is employed to close the governing equations. The computational results are compared with the previous experiments using the Ludwieg tube with a downstream diaphragm. The results clearly show that for an initial relative humidity below 30% there is no periodic oscillation of the condensation shock wave, but for an initial relative humidity over 40% the periodic excursions of the condensation shock occurs in the Ludwieg tube, and the frequency increases with the initial relative humidity. It is also found that total pressure loss due to nonequilibrium condensation in the Ludwieg tube should not be ignored even for a very low initial relative humidity, and the periodic excursions of the condensation shock wave are responsible for the total pressure loss.

  • This numerical analysis uses the lifting surface method and frequency-domain panel method based on the linear compressible aerodynamic theory. Increased knowledge of flow conditions within mixed-flow fan should indicates means of improving performance of these turbomachines. Thus, only an approximate solution is obtained whose prime intent is to recognize the most significant characteristics of the "ideal" geometry. For a given set of operating condition, the flow conditions within mixed-flow fan depend on the geometry of the machine (three-dimensional flow effects) and on the properties of the fluid. But most treatments of the problem have been concerned with the two-dimensional flow effects for incompressible, non-viscous fluids. Interest in the field of mixed-flow fan resulted in the undertaking of a program to develop reliable design procedures that would avoid the need for lengthy development work.

Numerical Analysis of Flow-Induced Noise by Vortex-Edge Interaction (Vortex-Edge의 상호작용에 기인한 유동소음의 전산해석)

  • An edge tone is the discrete tone or narrow-band sound produced by an oscillating free shear layer, impinging on a rigid surface. In this paper, we present a 2-D edge tone to predict the frequency characteristics of the discrete oscillations of a jet-edge feedback cycle, using the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). We use a modified version of the lattice BGK compressible fluid model, adding an additional term and allowing for longer time increments, compared to a conventional FDLBM, and also use a boundary fitted coordinates system. The jet is chosen long enough in order to guarantee the parabolic velocity profile of the jet at the outlet, and the edge consists of a wedge with an angle of ${\alpha}$ = 23. At a stand-off distance, the edge is inserted along the centerline of the jet, and a sinuous instability wave, with real frequency, is assumed to be created in the vicinity of the nozzle and propagates towards the downstream. We have succeeded in capturing very small pressure fluctuations, resulting from periodical oscillations of a jet around the edge. The pressure fluctuations propagate with the speed of sound. Its interaction with the wedge produces an non-rotational feedback field, which, near the nozzle exit, is a periodic transverse flow, producing the singularities at the nozzle lips.

CFD/CSD COUPLED ANALYSIS FOR HART II ROTOR-FUSELAGE MODEL AND FUSELAGE EFFECT ANALYSIS (HART II 로터-동체 모델의 CFD/CSD 연계해석과 동체효과 분석)

  • A loosely coupling method is adopted to combine a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver and the comprehensive structural dynamics (CSD) code, CAMRAD II, in a systematic manner to correlate the airloads, vortex trajectories, blade motions, and structural loads of the HART I rotor in descending flight condition. A three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes solver, KFLOW, using chimera overlapped grids has been used to simulate unsteady flow phenomena over helicopter rotor blades. The number of grids used in the CFD computation is about 24 million for the isolated rotor and about 37.6 million for the rotor-fuselage configuration while keeping the background grid spacing identical as 10% blade chord length. The prediction of blade airloads is compared with the experimental data. The current method predicts reasonably well the BVI phenomena of blade airloads. The vortices generated from the fuselage have an influence on airloads in the 1st and 4th quadrants of rotor disk. It appeared that presence of the pylon cylinder resulted in complex turbulent flow field behind the hub center.

  • In the present study, 2-D gas-kinetic flow solver on unstructured meshes was developed for flows from continuum to transitional regimes. The gas-kinetic BGK scheme is based on numerical solutions of the BGK simplification of the Boltzmann transport equation. In the initial reconstruction, the unstructured version of the linear interpolation is applied to compute left and right states along a cell interface. In the gas evolution step, the numerical fluxes are computed from the evaluation of the time-dependent gas distribution function around a cell interface. Two-dimensional compressible flow calculations were performed to verify the accuracy and robustness of the current gas-kinetic approach. Gas-kinetic BGK scheme was successfully applied to two-dimensional steady and unsteady flow simulations with strong contact discontinuities. Exemplary hypersonic viscous simulations have been conducted to analyze the performances of the gas-kinetic scheme. The computed results show fair agreement with other standard particle-based approaches for both continuum part and transitional part.
