This paper depicts the computational results for the axisymmetric subsonic/sonic ejector systems with a second throat. The numerical simulations are based on a fully implicit finite volume scheme of the compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in a domain that extends from the stagnation chamber to the ejector diffuser exit. In order to obtain practical design factors for the subsonic/sonic ejector systems which are applicable to industrial vacuum pumps, the ejector throat area, the mixing section configuration, and the ejector throat length are changed in computations. For the subsonic/sonic ejector systems operating in the range of low operation pressure ratios, the effects of the design factors on the vacuum performance of the secondary chamber are discussed.

Supersonic Dual Bell Nozzle (SDBN) is an altitude-adaptive propulsion nozzle achieved only by a nozzle wall inflection. In order to investigate the altitude adaptive capability and the effectiveness of this nozzle concept, the present study addresses a computational work of the flow through SDBN. Several types of the SDBNs are tested for a wide range of the pressure ratio which covers from an over-expended flow to a fully under-expended flow at the exit of the SDBN. Axisymmetric, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using a fully implicit finite volume differencing scheme. The present computational results reveal that the base nozzle length affects the shock wave system occurring inside SDBN. For a quit wide range of the pressure ratio the flow separation occurs at the nozzle inflection point. It is found that the maximum thrust coefficient is obtainable for the correct expansion state at the exit of SDBN.

The 1-D numerical study of the interior ballistics has been conducted. The unsteady compressible 1-D CFD code using SIMPLER algorithm and QUICK scheme has been developed. The mathematical model of the two-phase flow has been established for the behavior of the interior ballistics. The moving boundary due to the projectile motion as the physical phenomena of the interior ballistics results in the varied control volume. In order to analyze the moving boundary, the numerical codes, which apply the ghost-cell extrapolation method and the Lagrangian method respectively, have been developed. The ghost-cell extrapolation method has been used in the Eulerian coordinate system. The Lagrangian method has been used in Non-Eulerian coordinate system. These codes have been verified through the analysis of the free piston motion problem in the tube. Through this study, the basic techniques of the numerical code for the multi-dimensional two-phase flow of the interior ballistics have been obtained.

In the present work, a computational study was conducted to investigate characteristic of lateral force on the flow fields inside the propulsion nozzle with step. The unsteady, compressible, axisymmetric, Navier-Stocks equations with SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model are solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. In order to simulate the shut-down process of the engine, NPR is varied from 100.0 to 10.0. It is observed that the separation point and Mach-disk strongly depend on the variation of NPR, and adjusting the step lead to significantly different characteristics in the lateral forces.
The Numerical study has been carried out to investigate the effects of chemical reaction and thermal radiation on the rocket plume flow-field at various altitudes. The theoretical formulation is based on the Navier-Stokes equations for compressible flows along with the infinitely fast chemistry and thermal radiation. The governing equations were solved by a finite volume fully-implicit TVD(Total Variation Diminishing) code which uses Roe's approximate Riemann solver and MUSCL(Monotone Upstream-centered Schemes for Conservation Laws) scheme. LU-SGS (Lower Upper Symmetric Gauss Seidel) method is used for the implicit solution strategy. An equilibrium chemistry module for hydrocarbon mixture with detailed thermo-chemical properties and a thermal radiation module for optically thin media were incorporated with the fluid dynamics code. In this study, kerosene-fueled rocket was assumed operating at O/F ratio of 2.34 with a nozzle expansion ratio of 6.14. Flight conditions considered were Mach number zero at ground level, Mach number 1.16 at altitude 5.06km and Mach number 2.9 at altitude 17.34km. Numerical results gave the understandings on the detailed plume structures at different altitude conditions. The diffusive effect of the thermal radiation on temperature field and the effect of chemical recombination during the expansion process could be also understood. By comparing the results from frozen flow and infinitely fast chemistry assumptions, the excess temperature of the exhaust gas resulting from the chemical recombination seems to be significant and cannot be neglected in the view point of performance, thermal protection and flow physics.

The flow characteristics of supersonic ejectors is often subject to compressibility, unsteadiness and shock wave systems. The numerical works carried out thus far have been of one-dimensional analyses or some Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) which has been applied to only a very simplified configuration. For the design of effective ejector-pump systems the effects of secondary mass flow on the supersonic ejector flow should be fully understood. In the present work the supersonic ejector-pump flows with a secondary mass flow were simulated using CFD. A fully implicit finite volume scheme was applied to axisymmetric compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The standard two-equation turbulence model was employed to predict turbulent stresses. The results obtained showed that the flow characteristics of constant area mixing tube types were nearly independent of the secondary flow rate, but the flow fields of ejector system with the second-throat were strongly dependent on the secondary flow rate due to the effect of the back pressure near the primary nozzle exit.

The shock wave and boundary layer interaction patterns in an over-expanded rocket nozzle are associated with the production of undesirable side-forces during the start-up and shut-down processes of the engine. In the present work, a computational study is carried out to investigate the effect of the transient nozzle pressure ratio (NPR) on the flow fields inside the nozzle. The unsteady, compressible, axisymmetric, Navier-Stocks equations with SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model are solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. NPR is varied from 2.0 to 10.0, in order to simulate the start-up and shut-down processes of the rocket engine. It is observed that the interaction patterns and the hysteresis phenomenon strongly depend on the time variation of NPR, leading to significantly different characteristics in the lateral forces.

The effectiveness of two passive control techniques for alleviating the pressure oscillation generated in a supersonic cavity flow is investigated numerically. The passive devices suggested in the present research include a triangular bump and a sub-cavity installed near the upstream edge of a rectangular cavity. The supersonic cavity flow characteristics are examined by using the three-dimensional, unsteady Wavier-Stokes computation based on a finite volume scheme. Large eddy simulation (LES) is carried out to properly predict the turbulent features of cavity flow. The results show that the pressure oscillation near the downstream edge dominates overall time-dependent cavity pressure variations. Such an oscillation is attenuated more considerably using the sub-cavity compared with other methods, and a larger sub-cavity leads to better control performance.

A numerical study is carried out to analyze the steady three-dimensional turbulent flow through cylindrical and fan-shaped holes and the film cooling of these holes at low and high blowing ratios. Compressible Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation are solved using a finite-volume-based solver, and a shearstress transport model is used as the turbulence closure. The effects of the compound angle, pitch to diameter ratio, and lateral expansion angle of the hole on the film-cooling effectiveness are evaluated by the film-cooling effectiveness. It is observed that the compound angle of the hole enhances the film performance for the cylindrical hole, and a small hole pitch induces interactions between the coolants from the adjacent holes, thus reducing the film-cooling performance.

Detailed flow of a shrouded tail rotor in hover is studied by using a compressible inviscid flow solver on unstructured meshes. The numerical method is based on a cell-centered finite-volume discretization and an implicit Gauss-Seidel time integration. Numerical simulation is made for a single blade attached to the center body and guide by the duct by imposing a periodic boundary condition between adjacent rotor blades. The results show that the performance of an isolated rotor without shroud compares well with experiment. In case of a shrouded rotor, correction of the collective pitch angle is made such that the overall performance matches with experiment to account for the uncertainties of the experimental model configuration. Details of the flow field compare well with the experiment confirming the validity of the present method.
