  • A numerical study on the transient vapor flow and heat transfer is performed to investigate the ideal switching operation of heat source in a high temperature heat pipe. The cylindrical 2-dimensional compressible laminar vapor flow is assumed for the vapor space and the conjugate heat transfer for the heat pipe wall, wick and vapor space is calculated. The different boundary conditions such as constant heat flux, convective or radiative boundary at the outer wall are used respectively to compare the influence of boundary conditions on the transient operation. The transient temperature profile and the internal flow of the entire pipe for the switching operation are described as a result. The results show that the transient time is not significantly affected by the boundary conditions at the outer wall in present study. During the transition, two independent flows are observed temporarily on the right side and left side of the heat pipe. It is also found that the trend of temperature variation in the vapor region is different from the variation in the wick and wall region.

  • The objective of this study is convergence acceleration of multigrid Navier-Stokes solvers. This study has been performed to enhance the performance of preconditioned multi-stage time stepping method which is a popular smoother for the multigrid Navier-Stokes solvers. Comparative study on the convergence characteristics of the ADI and DDADI preconditioners has been conducted. It is shown that the DDADI preconditioner has better performance than the ADI by numerical tests on the 2-D compressible turbulent flows past airfoils. The Spalart-Allmaras turbulent model and the Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model have been compared with the multigrid calculations.

  • Hysteresis phenomena in fluid flow systems are frequently encountered in many industrial and engineering applications and mainly appear during the transient processes of change of the pressure ratio. Shock-containing flow field in supersonic nozzles is typically subject to such hysteresis phenomena, but associated flow physics is not yet understood well. In the present study, experimental work has been carried out to investigate supersonic nozzle flows during the transient processes of change in the nozzle pressure ratio. Time-dependent surface wall pressures were measured by a multiple of pressure transducers and the flow field was visualized using a nano-spark Schlieren optical method. The results obtained show that the hysteresis phenomenon is strongly dependent on the nozzle geometry as well as the time scale of the change of pressure ratio.

  • Ejector-diffuser system has long been used in many diverse fields of engineering applications and it has advantages over other fluid machinery, because of no moving parts and structural simplicity. This system makes use of high-pressure primary stream to entrain the low-pressure secondary stream through pure shear actions between two streams. In general, the flow field in the ejector-diffuser system is highly complicated due to turbulent mixing, compressibility effects and sometimes flow unsteadiness. A fatal drawback of the ejector system is in its low efficiency. Many works have been done to improve the performance of the ejector system, but not yet satisfactory, compared with that of other fluid machinery. In the present study, a mixing guide vane was installed at the inlet of the secondary stream for the purpose of the performance improvement of the ejector system. A CFD method has been applied to simulate the supersonic flows inside the ejector-diffuser system. The present results obtained were validated with existing experimental data. The mixing guide vane effects are discussed in terms of the entrainment ratio, total pressure loss as well as pressure recovery.

  • The present study represents the effects of boundary condition on the performance of a centrifugal blower at the interference plane between rotational and stationary domains using three dimensional compressible Navier-Stocks equations. Two boundary conditions, frozen-rotor and stage, are compared to analyze the blower performance. Installation angle between the cutoff of a volute casing and a impeller blade is also introduced to evaluate the blower performance and to understand the internal flow inside the blower. Throughout numerical simulation, it is found that the frozen rotor interface method at the interference plane represents well the variations of flow field inside the blower compared to stage interface method. However, pressure has maximum two percent error according to the installation angles while pressure is almost constant for the stage interface method. And stage interface method can relatively well predict the blower performance. Detailed internal flows of the centrifugal blower are compared and analyzed by numerical simulation.

  • The flight vehicles have cavities such as wheel wells and bomb bays. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves. Resonance phenomena can damage the structures around the cavity and negatively affect aerodynamic performance and stability. The flow field is observed to oscillate in the "shear layer mode" with low aspect ratio. In the present study, numerical analysis was performed for cavity flows by the unsteady compressible three dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with Wilcox's $\kappa$-$\omega$ turbulence model. The flow field is observed to oscillate in the shear layer mode" with large aspect ratio. Based on the SPL(Sound Pressure Level) analysis of the pressure variation at the cavity trailing edge, the dominant frequency was analyzed and compared with the results of Rossiter's formul. The aero-acoustic wave analyzed with CPD(Correlation of Pressure Distribution).

  • Sonic and supersonic jets include many complicated flow physics associated with shock waves, shear layers, vortices as well as strong interactions among them, and have a variety of engineering applications. Much has been learned from the previous researches on the sonic and supersonic jets but quantitative assessment of these jets is still uneasy due to the high velocity of flow, compressibility effects, and sometimes flow unsteadiness. In the present study, the sonic jets issuing from a convergent nozzle were measured by PIV and Schlieren optical techniques. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) with Olive oil particles of $1{\mu}m$ was employed to obtain the velocity field of the jets, and the black-white and color Schlieren images were obtained using Xe ramp. A color filter of Blue-Green-Red has been designed for the color Schlieren and obtained from an Ink jet printer. In experiments, two types of sonic nozzles were used at different operating pressure ratios(NPR). The obtained images clearly showed the major features of the jets such as Mach disk, barrel shock waves, jet boundaries, etc.

  • The present study is an experimental work of the sonic/supersonic air ejector-diffuser system. The pressure-time dependence in the secondary chamber of this ejector system is measured to investigate the steady operation of the ejector system. Six different primary nozzles of two sonic nozzles, two supersonic nozzles, petal nozzle, and lobed nozzle are employed to drive the ejector system at the conditions of different operating pressure ratios. Static pressures on the ejector-diffuser walls are to analyze the complicated flows occurring inside the system. The volume of the secondary chamber is changed to investigate the effect on the steady operation. the results obtained show that the volume of the secondary chamber does not affect the steady operation of the ejector-diffuser system but the time-dependent pressure in the secondary chamber is a strong function of the volume of the secondary chamber.

  • Jet cutting technology currently makes use of a generic supersonic gas jet to improve the cutting speed and performance. In order to get a better understanding of the flow characteristics involved in the supersonic jet cutting technology, the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using a fully implicit finite volume method. Computations have been conducted to investigate some major characteristics of supersonic coaxial turbulent jets. An assistant gas jet has been imposed on the primary gas jet to simulate realistic jet cutting circumstance. The pressure and the temperature ratios of the primary and assistant gas jets are altered to investigate the major characteristics of the coaxial jets. The total pressure and Mach number distributions, shock wave systems, and the jet core length which characterize the coaxial jet flows are strongly affected by the pressure ratio, but not significantly dependent on the total temperature ratio. The assistant gas jet greatly affects the basic flow characteristics of the shock system and the core length of under and over-expanded jets.
