  • The formation mechanism and photocatalytic properties of a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/$TiO_2$-based nanotube (TNTs) composite are investigated. The CNT/TNT composite is synthesized via a solution chemical route. It is confirmed that this 1-D nanotube composite has a core-shell nanotubular structure, where the TNT surrounds the CNT core. The photocatalytic activity investigated based on the methylene blue degradation test is superior to that of with pure TNT. The CNTs play two important roles in enhancing the photocatalytic activity. One is to act as a template to form the core-shell structure while titanate nanosheets are converted into nanotubes. The other is to act as an electron reservoir that facilitates charge separation and electron transfer from the TNT, thus decreasing the electron-hole recombination efficiency.

  • The core-shell composite particles of inorganic/organic were polymerized by using styrene(St) as a shell monomer and potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. We studied the effect of core-shell structure of silicone dioxide/styrene in the presence of an anionic surfactant sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and polyoxyethylene alky lether sulfate (EU-S133D). We found that when $SiO_2$ core/PSt shell polymerization was prepared on the surface $SiO_2$ particle, to minimize the coagulation during the shell polymerization, the optimum conditions were at concentration of $2.56{\times}10^{-2}mole/L$ SLS. The structure of core-shell polymer was confirmed by measuring the thermal decomposition of polymer composite using thermogravimetric analyzer and morphology of core-shell polymer particles by transmission electron microscope (TEM).

  • The mechanism of biological materials structure is very complex and has optimal properties compared to engineering materials. Top Neck mollusks shells, as an example of biological materials, have hierarchical structure, which 95 percent of its structure is Aragonite and 5 percent organic materials. This article detected mechanical properties of the Top Neck mollusks shell as a Nano composite using Nano-indentation method in different situations. Research findings indicate that mechanical properties of the Top Neck mollusks shell including elastic modulus and hardness are higher than a fresh one preserved in -50 centigrade and also a Top Neck mollusks shell preserved in environmental conditions. Nano-indentation test results are so close in range, overall, that hardness degree is 3900 to 5200 MPa and elastic modulus is 70 to 85 GPa.

  • Core-shell polymers of methyl methacrylate/styrene pair were prepared by sequential emulsion polymerization in the presence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) as an emulsifier using ammonium persulfate(APS) as an initiator. The characteristics of these core-shell polymers were evaluated. Core-shell composite latex has the both properties of core and shell components in a particle, where as polymer blonds or copolymers show a combined properties from the physical properties or two homopolymers. This unique behavior of core-shell composite latex can be used in many industrial fields. However, in preparation of core-shell composite latex, several unexpected phenomina are observed, such as, particle coagulation, low degree of polymerization, and formation of new particles during shell polymerization. To solve the disadvantages, we studied the effects of surfactant concentrations, initiator concentrations, and reaction temperature on the tore-shell structure or PMMA/PSt and PSt/PMMA. Particle size and particle size distribution were measured by using particle size analyzer, and the morphology of the core-shell composite latex was observed by using transmission electron microscope. Glass transition temperature($T_g$) was also measured by using differential scanning calorimeter. To identify the core-shell structure, pH of the composite latex solutions were measured.

  • This paper deals with the mechanical behaviour of the thin-walled cylindrical air-spring shell (CAS) made of rubber-textile cord composite (RCC) subjected to different types of loading. An orthotropic hyperelastic constitutive model is presented which can be applied to numerical simulation for the response of biological soft tissue and of the nonlinear anisotropic hyperelastic material of the CAS used in vibroisolation of driver's seat. The parameters of strain energy function of the constitutive model are fitted to the experimental results by the nonlinear least squares method. The deformation of the inflated CAS is calculated by solving the system of five first-order ordinary differential equations with the material constitutive law and proper boundary conditions. Nonlinear hyperelastic constitutive equations of orthotropic composite material are incorporated into the finite strain analysis by finite element method (FEM). The results for the deformation analysis of the inflated CAS made of RCC are given. Numerical results of principal stretches and deformed profiles of the inflated CAS obtained by numerical deformation analysis are compared with experimental ones.

  • Distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator system has been designed for the active vibration control of shell structure. PVDF is used for the materials of sensor/actuator. To prevent the adverse effect of spillover, distributed modal sensor/actuator system is established. Although shell structure is three-dimensional structure, the PVDF sensor/actuator system can be treated as two-dimensional Finite element programs are developed to consider curved structures having PVDF modal sensor/actuator. The nine-node Mindlin shell element with five nodal degree of freedoms is used for finite element discretization. The electrode patterns and lamination angle of PVDF sensor/actuator are optimized to design the modal sensor/actuator system Genetic algorithm is used for optimization. Sensor is designed to minimize the observation spillover, and actuator is designed to minimize the system energy of the control modes under a given initial condition. Modal sensor/actuator for the first and second modes of singly curved cantilevered shell structure are designed using mentioned methods. Discrete LQG method is used as a control law. Experimental demonstrations of the active vibration control with designed sensor/actuator system have been performed successfully.

  • Shape design optimization of shell structure is implemented on a basis of integrated framework of geometric modeling and finite element analysis which is constructed on the geometrically exact shell theory. This shell theory enables more accurate and robust analysis for complicated shell structures, and it fits for the nature of B-spline function which Is popular modeling scheme in CAD field. Shape of laminated composite shells is optimized through genetic algorithm and sequential linear programming, because there ire numerous optima for various configurations, constraints, and searching paths. Sequential adaptation of global and local optimization makes the process more efficient. Two different optimized results of laminated composite shell structures to minimize strain energy are shown for different layup sequence.
