Composite materials offer distinct and unique properties that are not naturally inherited in the individual materials that make them. One of the most attractive composites to manufacture is the aluminum alloy matrix composite, because it usually combines easiness of availability, light weight, strength, and other favorable properties. In the current work, Powder Metallurgy Method (PMM) is used to prepare Al2024 matrix composites reinforced with different mixing ratios of yttrium oxide (Y2O3) particles. The tests performed on the composites include physical, mechanical, and tribological, as well as microstructure analysis via optical microscope. The results show that the experimental density slightly decreases while the porosity increases when the reinforcement ratio increases within the selected range of 0 ~ 20 wt%. Besides this, the yield strength, tensile strength, and Vickers hardness increase up to a 10 wt% Y2O3 ratio, after which they decline. Moreover, the wear results show that the composite follows the same paradigm for strength and hardness. It is concluded that this composite is ideal for application when higher strength is required from aluminum composites, as well as lighter weight up to certain values of Y2O3 ratio.

Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of liquefied digestive medicines on the composite resin surface. Methods: Three types of liquefied digestive medicines (Gashwalmyeongsu, Wicheongsu, and Saengrokcheon) were selected as experimental groups, Samdasoo and Chamisul as negative controls, and Trevi as positive controls were selected to measure pH and titratable acidity. The samples filled with resin at acrylic were made total 300, 50 per group. To evaluate the erosion risk of the composite resin, the specimens were immersed in a liquefied medicine for 1, 3, 5, 15, and 30 minutes, and then the surface microhardness was measured using the Vickers Hardness Number, and the surface change was observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: The average pH of the three liquefied medicine was 3.75±0.30, the Saengrokcheon was the lowest at 3.45±0.01, and the Trevi was 4.66 and Samdasoo and Chamisul were 7.40 and 8.58, respectively. The amount of NaOH reaching pH 5.5 and 7.0 was the lowest in the order of Trevi, Gashwalmyeongsu, Wicheongsu, and Saengrokcheon. The largest surface hardness reduction value was shown in Gashwalmyeongsu (-11.85±3.73), followed by Saengrokcheon (-9.79±3.11) and Wicheongsu (-8.28±2.83), and Samdasoo (-0.84±1.56) and Chamisul (-6.24±0.42) had relatively low surface hardness reduction values. However, Trevi (-16.67±5.41), a positive control group containing carbonic acid, showed a higher decrease in surface hardness than the experimental group. As a result of observation with SEM, experimental group and positive control group, showed rough surfaces and irregular cracks, and negative control groups showed smooth patterns similar to before immersion. Conclusion: The liquefied digestive medicine with low pH could weaken the composite resin surface, and the carbonic acid component could more effect on the physical properties of the composite resin than pH.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of glycerin topical application on the surface hardness of composite after curing. Materials and Methods: A composite (Z-250, 3M ESPE) was packed into a disc-shaped brass mold and light cured according to one of the following protocols. Group 1 (control) was exposed to air and light cured for 40 sec, group 2 was covered with a Mylar strip and light cured for 40 sec, group 3 was surface coated with glycerin and light cured for 40 sec, and group 4 was exposed to air and light cured for 20 sec and then surface coated with glycerin and cured for additional 20 sec. Twenty specimens were prepared for each group. The surface hardnesses of specimens were measured with or without polishing. Five days later, the surface hardness of each specimen was measured again. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests. Results: The surface hardnesses of the unpolished specimens immediately after curing decreased in the following order: group 2 > 3 > 4 > 1. For the polished specimens, there was no significant difference among the groups. Within the same group, the hardness measured after five days was increased compared to that immediately after curing, and the polished specimens showed greater hardness than did the unpolished specimens. Conclusions: The most effective way to increase the surface hardness of composite is polishing after curing. The uses of a Mylar strip or glycerin topical application before curing is recommended.

The Vickers hardness test is a common method used to characterize the hardness of ceramic materials. However, the hardness is not a deterministic value, but is a random variable. The objective of this paper is to investigate the statistical properties of the bending strength and a set of Vickers hardness values in single $ZrO_2$ and composite $ZrO_2/SiC$ with a SiC additive. In this work, we compare the characteristic value and variation with the results based on Weibull statistical analysis. The probability distributions of the bending strength and Vickers hardness agreed relatively well with the Weibull distribution. We evaluate the scale parameter and shape parameter in asreceived $ZrO_2$ and $ZrO_2/SiC$ composite ceramics, as well as in their heat treated ceramics.

Prevailing dissemination of machine tools and cutting technology have caused drastic developments of high speed dry machining with work materials of high hardness, and demands on the high-hardness-materials with high efficiency have become increasingly important in terms of productivity, cost reduction, as well as environment-friendly issue. Addition of Si to TiAlN has been known to form nano-composite coating with higher hardness of over 30 GPa and oxidation temperature over $1,000^{\circ}C$. However, it is not easy to add Si to TiAlN by using conventional PVD technologies. Therefore, Ti-Al-Si-N have been prepared by hybrid process of PVD with multiple target sources or PVD combined with PECVD of Si source gas. In this study, a single composite target of Ti-Al-Si was prepared by powder metallurgy of MA (mechanical alloying) and SPS (spark plasma sintering). Properties of he resulting alloying targets were examined. They revealed a microstructure with micro-sized grain of about $1{\sim}5{\mu}m$, and all the elements were distributed homogeneously in the alloying target. Hardness of the Ti-Al-Si-N target was about 1,127 Hv. Thin films of Ti-Al-Si-N were prepared by unbalanced magnetron sputtering method by using the home-made Ti-Al-Si alloying target. Composition of the resulting thin film of Ti-Al-Si-N was almost the same with that of the target. The thin film of Ti-Al-Si-N showed a hardness of 35 GPa and friction coefficient of 0.66.

Objectives: This study evaluated the relationship between the battery charge level and irradiance of light-emitting diode (LED) light-curing units (LCUs) and how these variables influence the Vickers hardness number (VHN) of a bulk-fill resin. Materials and Methods: Four LCUs were evaluated: Radii Plus (SDI), Radii-cal (SDI), Elipar Deep Cure (Filtek Bulk Fill, 3M Oral Care), and Poly Wireless (Kavo Kerr). Irradiance was measured using a radiometer every ten 20-second activations until the battery was discharged. Disks (4 mm thick) of a bulk-fill resin (Filtek Bulk Fill, 3M Oral Care) were prepared, and the VHN was determined on the top and bottom surfaces when light-cured with the LCUs with battery levels at 100%, 50% and 10%. Data were analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance, the Tukey's test, and Pearson correlations (α = 5%). Results: Elipar Deep Cure and Poly Wireless showed significant differences between the irradiance when the battery was fully charged versus discharged (10% battery level). Significant differences in irradiance were detected among all LCUs, within each battery condition tested. Hardness ratios below 80% were obtained for Radii-cal (10% battery level) and for Poly Wireless (50% and 10% battery levels). The battery level showed moderate and strong, but non-significant, positive correlations with the VHN and irradiance. Conclusions: Although the irradiance was different among LCUs, it decreased in half of the devices along with a reduction in battery level. In addition, the composite resin effectiveness of curing, measured by the hardness ratio, was reduced when the LCUs' battery was discharged.

The SiCp/AC8A composites were fabricated by the pressureless metal infiltration process successfully. The effect of additional Mg, which were mixed with SiC particles to promote interfacial wetting between the reinforcement and matrix alloy, and particle size on the mechanical properties was investigated. By increasing the additional Mg content the hardness of SiCp/AC8A composites was increased due to the hard reaction products, but the bending strength was decreased by the excess reaction of Mg and high porosity level when the additional Mg content is over 7%. The Hardness and bending strength was increased by decreasing the size of SiC particle.
The mechanism of biological materials structure is very complex and has optimal properties compared to engineering materials. Top Neck mollusks shells, as an example of biological materials, have hierarchical structure, which 95 percent of its structure is Aragonite and 5 percent organic materials. This article detected mechanical properties of the Top Neck mollusks shell as a Nano composite using Nano-indentation method in different situations. Research findings indicate that mechanical properties of the Top Neck mollusks shell including elastic modulus and hardness are higher than a fresh one preserved in -50 centigrade and also a Top Neck mollusks shell preserved in environmental conditions. Nano-indentation test results are so close in range, overall, that hardness degree is 3900 to 5200 MPa and elastic modulus is 70 to 85 GPa.
$TiH_2$ nanopowder was made by high energy ball milling. The milled $TiH_2$ and CNT powders were then simultaneously synthesized and consolidated using pulsed current activated sintering (PCAS) within one minute under an applied pressure of 80 MPa. The milling did not induce any reaction between the constituent powders. Meanwhile, PCAS of the $TiH_2$-CNT mixture produced a Ti-TiC composite according to the reaction ($0.92TiH_2+0.08CNT{\rightarrow}0.84Ti+0.08TiC+0.92H_2$, $0.84TiH_2+0.16CNT{\rightarrow}0.68Ti+0.16TiC+0.84H_2$). Highly dense nanocrystalline Ti-TiC composites with a relative density of up to 99.7% were obtained. The hardness and fracture toughness of the dense Ti-8 mole% TiC and Ti-16 mole% TiC produced by PCAS were also investigated. The hardness of the Ti-8 mole% TiC and Ti-16 mole% TiC composites was higher than that of Ti. The hardness value of the Ti-16 mole% TiC composite was higher than that of the Ti-8 mole% TiC composite without a decrease in fracture toughness.
In the present study, the effects of Al/SiC interface reaction and the formation of $Al_4C_3$ compounds on the mechanical properties of the Al/SiC composites prepared by squeeze casting were investigated. After squeeze casting, the size of dendrites in Al without whiskers were larger than those with whiskers. The hardness of composite materials (about 72 Hv) was found to be approximating 40% higher than that of matrix metal (29Hv), which gradually increases which heat treatment Time showing maximum hardness at 12hr. The observation of increasing number of compounds in 12hrs heat treatment suggests that these compounds are responsible for the increase of hardness. By X-ray diffraction studies, those compounds were identified as $Al_4C_3$, (Al, Si). And intensity of Si peak increased. The tensile strengh of composite materials was gradually decresed by heat tretment, which was in contrast to the behavior of hardeness. With incresing heat tretment time, the fracture mode of composite materials was changed from large dimples and pull-out form of fiber to the fracture and rupture foum of fiber.
