Oxidized-PAN fiber reinforced composite(OFRP), carbon fiber reinforced composite(CFRP), aramid fiber reinforced composite(AFRP), and glass fiber reinforced composite(GFRP) were fabricated with phenolic resin matrix by hot press molding. We tested the friction coefficient and wear rate varying with fiber weight fraction and observed the effect of fibers according to characteristics of individual reinforcement. When the amount of aramid fiber was 45wt%, average friction coefficient was maximum value of 0.353~0.383, where as, when the amount of pitch based carbon fiber was 45wt%, average friction coefficient was the lowest value of 0.164~0.190. The wear rate of AFRP and CFRP was low, but that of GFRP and OFRP increases drastically in the case of increasing of fiber weight fraction. Wear diagram of OFRP was unstable, but that of CFRP and AFRP was a bit stable. Through very unstable diagram of GFRP, we found that friction stability of GFRP was the lowest.

The present study is undertaken to evaluate the effect of volume fraction on the results of Charpy impact test for the rubber matrix filled with nano sized silica particles composites. The Charpy impact tests are conducted in the temperature range $0^{\circ}C$ and $-10^{\circ}C$. The range of volume fraction of silica particles tested are between 11% to 25%. The critical energy release rate $G_{IC}$ of the rubber matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles is affected by silica volume fraction and it is shown that the value of $G_{IC}$ decreases as volume fraction increases. In regions close to the initial crack tip, fracture processes such as matrix deformation, silica particle debonding and delamination, and/or pull out between particles and matrix which is ascertained by SEM photographs of Charpy impact fracture surfaces.
Process modeling with activated sludge models (ASMs) is useful for the design and operational improvement of biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes. Effective utilization of ASMs requires the influent fraction analysis (IFA) of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). However, this is difficult due to the time and cost involved in the design and operation steps, thereby declining the simulation reliability. Harmony Search (HS) algorithm was utilized herein to determine the relationships between composite variables and state variables of the model IWA ASM1. Influent fraction analysis was used in estimating fractions of the state variables of the WWTP influent and its application to 9 wastewater treatment processes in South Korea. The results of influent $S_s$ and $Xs+X_{BH}$, which are the most sensitive variables for design of activated sludge process, are estimated within the error ranges of 8.9-14.2% and 3.8-6.4%, respectively. Utilizing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) fraction analysis for influent wastewater, it was possible to predict the concentrations of treated organic matter and nitrogen in 9 full scale BNR processes with high accuracy. In addition, the results of daily influent fraction analysis (D-IFA) method were superior to those of the constant influent fraction analysis (C-IFA) method.
This paper investigates the lap splice performance of structural steel bars embedded in high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composite(HPFRCC) with various matrix ductilities. Matrix ductility is governed fiber type and fiber volume fraction. Fiber types were polypropylene(PP), polyethylene(PE) and hybrid fiber[polyethylene fiber+steel cord(PE+SC)]. The lap splice length$(l_d)$ was calculated according to the relevant ACI code requirements for reinforcing bars in normal concrete. As the result of tests, lap splice strength of HPFRCC using PE1.5 and hybrid fiber increased by up to $82{\sim}91$ percent more than that of concrete. Splice strength and energy absorption capacity of PE0.75+SC0.75 or PE1.5(fiber volume fraction 1.5%) specimen increased more than that of PP2.0(fiber volume fraction 2.0%) specimen. Therefore lap splice performance depends on fiber tensile strength and Young's modulus more than fiber volume fraction. Also, HPFRCC appear multiple crack and ductile postpeak behavior due to bridging of fiber in cementitious composite.

Drop weight impact tests were performed to investigate the impact behavior of carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates reinforced by short fibers and other interleaving materials. Characterization techniques, such as cross-sectional fractography and scanning acoustic microscopy, were employed quantitatively to assess the internal damage of some composite laminates. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe impact damage and fracture modes on specimen fracture surfaces. The results show that composite laminates experience various types of fracture; delamination, intra-ply cracking, matrix cracking and fiber breakage depending on the interlayer materials. Among the composite laminates tested in this study, the composites reinforced by Zylon fibers showed very good impact damage resistance with medium level of damage, while the composites interleaved by poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEEA) film is expected to deteriorate the bulk strength due to the reduction of fiber volume fraction, even though the damaged area is significantly reduced.
In this paper, the fracture toughness and mechanisms of failure in a random SiC-whisker/$Al_{2}O_3$ ceramic composite were investigated using in situ observations during mode I(opening) loading. $SiC_{w}/Al_{2}O_3$ composite was obtained by hot press sintering of $Al_{2}O_3$ powder and SiC whisker as the matrix and reinforcement, respectively. The whisker and powder were mixed using a turbo mill. The composite was produced at SiC whisker volume fraction of $0.3\%$. Compared with monolithic $Al_{2}O_3$, fracture toughness enhancement was observed in $SiC_{w}/Al_{2}O_3$ composite. This improved fracture toughness was attributed to SiC whisker bridging and crack deflection. $SiC_{w}/Al_{2}O_3$ composite exhibited typically brittle fracture behavior, but a fracture process zone was observed in this composite. This means that the load versus load-line displacement curve of $SiC_{w}/Al_{2}O_3$ composite from a fracture test may involve a small non-linear region near the peak load.

Free vibration characteristics of a cantilevered laminated composite beam with multiple non-propagating transverse open cracks are investigated. In the present analysis a special ply-angle distribution referred to as asymmetric stiffness configuration inducing the elastic coupling between chord-wise bending and extension is considered. The multiple open cracks are modelled as equivalent rotational springs whose spring constants are calculated based on the fracture mechanics of composite material structures. Governing equations of a composite beam with open cracks are derived via Hamilton's Principle and Timoshenko beam theory encompassing transverse shear and rotary inertia effect is adopted. The effects of various parameters such as the ply angle, fiber volume fraction, crack numbers, crack positions and crack depthes on the free vibration characteristics of the beam with multiple cracks are highlighted. The numerical results show that the existence of the multiple cracks in an anisotropic composite beam affects the free vibration characteristics in a more complex fashion compared with the beam with a single crack.

In order to investigate the impact behaviors of 3-D braided glass/epoxy composites, the energy profiles and damage area were compared to the laminates of similar volume fraction and composition. The energy profiles showed different characteristics from each other which indicates they have distict energy absorption mechanisms. The image analysis on the damage projections visualized the crack propagation paths along the fiber direction.

In case of performing resin transfer molding (RTM), race track effects and non-uniform fiber volume fraction may cause undesirable resin flow pattern and thus result in dry spots, which affect the mechanical properties of the finished parts. In this study, a real time RTM control strategy to reduce these unfavorable effects is proposed. Through numerical simulations and experiments, the validity of the proposed scheme is demonstrated.
